I've never felt so disgusted by a hostel after the deadbeat working at the restaurant charged me 5RMB for a glass of water. Why does this establishment pretend to be 'vogue' if its staff are nothing more than washed-up sleaze? And by the way, I've never seen so many prostitutes in a bar in my 5 years in China.
My wife and I in our sixties from New Zealand stayed at the Hump beside Jinbi Square for just over a week split into two stays, one each end of March. The restaurant was not operating at the time but The Hump is surrounded by so much good eating and literally dozens of different styles of eatery within 5 minutes walk that this is not an issue. The Bar is a lively spot with young Chinese in the evenings. Bar staff friendly. The staff were wonderful where the Manager and one of the top Hostesses speak good English. The lady and man who tended our rooms were lovely, looking after us and keeping the room perfect and she speaks enough English for ease of stay, so we became friends. Excellent rooftop garden area to relax in between adventures around the city and greater Yunnan. We had a room on wing C. We thoroughly recommend The Hump on Jinbi rd. If traveling through Kunming in future we will definitely return to The Hump. Note. I ticked Quirky in the options below. Fun quirky.…
We booked two beds in the women's 6 bed dorm. It was probably the nicest hostel setup I've ever stayed at. Each bunk had its own fold out desk, two lights, nice heavy linens for winter, and a blackout curtain to pull completely across the bed, so you wouldn't get woken up by light in the morning. There were also locking cabinets for each bed, with key and lock provided. It felt secure and it was a nice touch. The heat/AC controls were also accessible, so when we checked in in the middle of the night in January, we were able to warm up the previously empty room quite quickly. The bathrooms are communal, but there are lots, with western toilets. The showers were also nice, with the changing area for each private stall having its own door as well as a shower curtain. It was all very clean. The only issue we had was that we were woken up by two male staff members who just opened the door and decided to fling open our balcony doors and have a chat for five minutes. At first I thought they wouldn't have realized we were there, as we'd checked in so late, but the curtains were drawn on two beds, so it should have been pretty clear that there were guests sleeping. Not long after, a cleaner came to clean the room, but it was around 8 AM for an 11 AM checkout, and we'd only been in our beds for about 4 hours, so we were a bit cranky. If there were other guests in the room who had checked out, it would have been understandable, but we were the only ones there. Overall, the facilities are lovely, and booking on their website was handy. It was fantastic that they were able to hold beds for us so late, to accommodate our redeye flight. However, the staff needs some basic training about when it's appropriate to go into the guest rooms. If you're booking online through their website, make sure to give the information for each guest, not only the one booking. When we booked, they only assigned one bed, though we asked for two, because they didn't have the name of the second guest. That was fine for us as they weren't near full occupancy and they just assigned another bed in the same room, but it could cause issues during busy times!…
This was our first time at The Hump and we were very surprised. If there's such a thing as a five-star hostel, this is it. Everything felt new, well-designed and well-built. Speaking with the manager (owner?) the next morning, I learned that The Hump had recently re-opened after a major renovation. Our dorm room was spacious and I was impressed by the design and quality of construction. The bunks are solid and quiet even when someone is in the bed above you and the door to the hallway closes quietly. The bathroom down the hall is amazing: long rows of sinks, individual showers and toilets. There's a large cafe/nightclub, but we didn't check that out. My only complaint is that there did not seem to be a kitchen area. I don't cook at hostels, but I do want a place to boil water for tea and coffee in the morning. The front desk filled my mug with hot water, but that's down the elevator and I need access to a kettle to boil water for coffee. Note: I accidentally clicked on the "location" rating and this site won't let me undo it. We were just passing through Kunming so I can't say much about the location other than it is in a lively downtown area with upscale shopping.…
if you are going to visit the capital of Ecuador and still looking for a place to stay I highly recommend to check out the HUMP DAY HOSTAL!!! Why? # It's located in the historic center of Quito, so everything is pretty close (local food, restaurants, public transport, possibilities of sightseeing ...) # Besides from nice and spacious rooms you will have everything you need such as comfy beds, lockers, plugs next to the bed, clean kitchen, rooftop etc. # Best staff and lovly volunteers, who are willing to help with everything.
