Hotel Shangri-La garners compliments for its prime location, easily accessible to the waterfront and local amenities, making it a favorite for many guests. Reviewers frequently applaud the hotel's cleanliness and comfortable rooms, though a few suggest enhancements in Wi-Fi and décor are needed.
While the friendly staff and comprehensive amenities contribute to a welcoming atmosphere, some guests feel the communal areas lack vibrancy. Despite the occasional mention of costly extras, the general consensus is that the hotel offers good value.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our Borneo trip, mostly as an opportunity to adjust to the time zone and weather a bit before heading off on jungle tours. While the hotel was convenient and practical for that purpose, overall it was a pretty average experience.
From arrival to departure, the service was lacking (queueing to check in/ out / for breakfast, having to wait over an hour for room service, patchy housekeeping, extra charge for breakfast box upon early departure, no sign of the shuttle service into the city that we'd read about) and the decor in the room was tired and a little shabby.
On a more positive note, the gym was amazing and the spa was good including their complimentary yoga class.
Breakfast was absolute chaos – we found it quite a stressful experience while jetlagged! I appreciate we were there on a weekend but it was crazy busy every morning (ticketing system in place) and the staff couldn't seem to keep up with restocking essentials like clean plates and cups. The pool and beach areas were OK but again extremely busy, the loungers weren't very comfortable and on a couple of occasions we had to go on a hunt for towels as there simply weren’t any at the various towel stations.

1. The Hotel was very responsive to our requests at time of booking.
2. The staffs were very helpful starting with the doorman, the reception and restaurant waiters. Ricky, the reception staff was very helpful with his information and guidance.
3. The breakfast spread is all right with choice of local cuisines, nasi lemak, fried mee, soto mee, toast bread, fruits and cakes besides a egg station.
4. Though there were only a handful of guests at this control measure times, we really enjoyed the daily breakfast in our own sweet time with the mixed spread.
5. Though the hotel is a bit aged, our bath room has a make over with new tiles and it is spacious with a tub and cloth line. The shower was great and the toilet amenities were generous and daily towels were clean.
6. Location wise, it is quite strategic, surrounded by Hilton, Holiday Inn express and within walking distance to Arkinson Clock Tower, stadium, mini bus stand and Welcome seafood restaurant.
7. We will return to this hotel in our future trip

The room was very clean, and the beds are very comfortable. However, the wifi speed is super slow almost unusable. Hope they can fix that. The staffs are very friendly, greets us every time they see us, but I could always use their help for taking my bags to the rooms since I am using crutches.

Pros: A large and stylish hotel, with stunning views, art displayed throughout public spaces. One of the best beds and sleep I have experienced. Pool was fantastic. Glass bottles in room for drinking water. Air conditioning switches off if balcony door is open thereby saving power.
scope for improvement: Need to clearly label the vegetarian food in the breakfast. If the hotel really cares about every guest. Plastic toiletries in the bathrooms could be replaced with a dispenser.
Overall a pleasant experience. Would stay there again.

It is an old hotel indeed but is consider clean and sufficiently maintained. Breakfast provided can consider as a 4 star hotel.
We have forgotten to load a baggage to our rental car and leave it at open area in front of reception, we only notice when we reach airport after 6 hours. With the assistance from their staff they deliver it to airport within an hour, we manage to receive it and check in the baggage.
Thank you. We enjoy your hospitality and will return when we are in KK again.

+1
Stayed in this hotel for one night. It is an old hotel but conveniently located to most of the eating places. What I like about the hotel is it’s cleanliness and that it is very well maintained besides its age. The reception and staff was exceptionally friendly. Due to control movement order and the limited number of customers, breakfast was a set breakfast which is to be ordered beforehand at the reception.
I throughly enjoyed my stay in Hotel Shangri-La. Mind you this hotel does not belong to the Shangrila Group if hotels.

Good value hotel. Spotless. Great staff. Could reduce plastic use.
Rooms are a good size and very clean. Fridge and kettle provided as well as hair dryer and iron. We stayed here at the beginning and end of a G Adventure tour. Our first room had a noisy aircon, we reported it and the maintenance sorted it but only temporarily. Our room at the end of the tour was very quiet and set to correct temperature. Breakfast is lovely with Malayan and Western choices. Choice of local or machine coffee. There is an egg station serving delicious omelettes.
All the staff are welcoming, friendly and efficient.
A reduction in one use only products in the bathroom rooms by installing shampoo and soap dispensers would be a good idea, as well as a water dispenser in reception to avoid providing plastic water bottles in rooms. Plastic wasted in Kota Kinabalu and all of Sabah is a huge problem.

The hotel is at a good location close to the center. The building is one of the oldest in town and although its partly renovated it kept its original character. The rates are very affordable and the price/performance is excellent.
The hotel stands out in its breakfast/lunch and dining options, again at very affordable pricelevels. It has overall a cosy atmosphere.
Due to this excellent price/performance it can be busy and during our stay we experienced some noice on the hallway caused by other guest, but this can happen in any hotel.
At checking out we mentioned this at the reception desk and the staff immediately reported this to the management.
After making their apologees the management offered us a breakfast and took the time to listen to our experience. They also arranged free transportation to our next destination north of Kota Kinabalu.
In our many travels we have never experienced such a 5-star service at a 3-star hotel.
If you are seeking an affordable hotel in KK with excellent service and where the management and staff realy cares about their guest, we can highly recommend this hotel.
Overall, based on our experience, we give Hotel Shangri-la a 9.0 rating.

Great service, staff polite and helpful. Location very central, walking distance to eateries, malls, waterfront and 15 mins from the airport. Rooms are older than other hotels so don’t expect the bouncy carpets or modern decor. But over all a good stay. Will be back.

100 m to the left you have the "Kinabalu Hilton" with a huge pool. Some refreshments, maybe a lunch by the pool? - I guess you will be welcome to the pool for free :)
I didn’t drive there but there is a large parking lot , you’d get more specific info if you email the hotel directly including whether there is a charge for parking .
Hi, good day to you. No we don't have coin laundry in the hotel but we do provide proper in house laundry service. As mentioned above, there is a coin laundry nearby the hotel.
