Primary reason for staying 2-nights in Matsumoto was to tackle a return trip on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route from the Shinano-Omachi side. An added bonus of using Matsumoto as a base was that it afforded a brief opportunity to explore this delightful town. My random choice of Hotel Kagetsu proved to be another bonus in itself.
The hotel exhibits quality and luxury in a classy, downplayed way. Arriving at the hotel on my 1st night after a long rail journey, I particularly liked the small details like sitting you down in the lounge and serving tea and refreshing towels whilst the check-in process was conducted. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive throughout.
The hotel is a brief taxi ride from the JR Station, but make sure you pick up a copy of the 'Town Walking Map' at Reception. It is only a few minutes walk to Matsumoto Castle (essential to visit after dark to see it floodlit). A short walk beyond the castle is the Matsumoto Shrine and the impressive Former Kaichi Elementary School. In the opposite direction it is only a few minutes walk to the Yohashira Shrine and the Nakamachi neighbourhood beyond.

The hotel is historic and quite lovely. The dining room, lobby and other features have a nice feel to them. The rooms are a decent size - the is not a businessman’s hotel - and are pleasant. The staff is invariably thoughtful and courteous. The breakfast buffet is flavorful and better than most. (The grilled mackerel was delicious!). Even small things like the elevators which do not make the annoying “ding” sound when they arrive at your floor. On the negative side, you cannot control the temperature in your own room and the accessories are just basic. The beds were comfortable enough (we like the firmness of Japanese hotel beds) but perhaps a little old. The location is really great, though, and we would happily return. It is good value for money - nice but not luxurious and still affordable.

The hotel is an old western style building built 100+ years ago, and the location is great closing to the famous tourist attractions. Also the hotel staff are helpful, especially a young lady who can speak Chinese in Peking accent, very nice. However, the facility in the room is pretty old, we understand the amendment cannot be done somehow due to protection to the old building, which indeed affect the experience staying in the hotel. For example, the bath is old enough and seems not clean, too high for us to get in / out to take shower, the space is not enough and unreasonably layout to use it comfortably. Besides, room is not cleaned on a daily basis, so hotel staff leaving the clean towel and one-time-usage stuff outside the door, but for the used stuff, hard to find space to put them in the bathroom. Finally, the breakfast is truly average, and soundproof is not so good to prevent the sound from the corridor and outside the window, but the sightseeing of the window is great. Well, we live in Annex building.

This was one of the more ‘traditional’ hotels in which we stayed. It was on the older side. Our room was in what was described as the annexe. It was a
Nice room of decent size. As is typical in Japan everything was provided plus the extra bonus of chargers and a blue tooth speaker if wanted. It was the only hotel during our stay to provide a Nespresso machine. . Very traditional pyjamas i Liked the room as there was a lobby area in which we could accommodate and easily access suitcases without falling over them. There was a Decent size bathroom with a small bath and shower. The whole room was very clean except for some mould on bathroom tiles. The Shower is good if your height is up to about 6’ 2”. Shower head holes needed bit of lime scale cleaning to flow better. Please note- the shower is in deep raised bath. This was Harder for a short person to get in and out. I Thought I would slip so installation of a grab handle or step would be very helpful. The Beds were very comfortable and the single beds are 4’ which is a good size. The Room did get cold but good heating provided. Plenty of plugs. Room was Very quiet. Breakfast mainly traditional Japanese but some limited western food available. Very good Japanese breakfast. Public baths are on site . There is free Shuttle departing at fixed times to the station which you pre book. Suggest you book the night before. There is a small Cafe attached to the hotel with a small shop. Good atmosphere. Very helpful staff. Location within walking distance of anything you want to see in Matsumoto and the station.

This a beautiful hotel. As soon as you walk in the feeling is of a calm and luxurious space added to by the tea as you check-in. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
We opted for a Japanese style room...which was huge! Beautifully furnished, although we found the night on the futons a bit hard (and harder than others we've slept on).
The hotel is located a short walk from Nakamachi Street and also very close to the castle (both well worth visiting).
The breakfast buffet (with a large selection of Western and Japanese treats) was delightful.

We were allocated a room in the annex. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever stayed anywhere so cold. The room was in a funny shape with the two beds around a corner but the bed nearest the window was next to a draft which made it terribly cold.

The bathroom was also odd in that it was a wet room but the bath emptied into the bathroom next to the toilet, so you ran the risk of wet feet whenever you went to the toilet.

Good location but let down by the room configured.

This quirky but comfortable hotel won't necessarily wow you but they get the details right. Quaint architecture, comfortable yukata, very nice service (in particular they were very sweet when dealing with a lost passport situation!). A 12 min walk from the station, nice emphasis on local crafts, and very close to the matsumoto castle.

Breakfast was superb with plenty of options from Japanese to western food. Location was great also, walking distance to everything including the castle. Facilities were basic and room was outdated for the cost.

Well, if I could give the hotel 6 stars, I would.

It all starts with a very welcoming check-in. Whilst the standard for most hotels would be for you to stand at the check in counter and wait for the admin to be done, the staff at Kagetsu gently asks you to sit at the sofa area whilst they prepare for your check in. You are served a welcome drink, snack and towel to refresh yourself after the probably big rush from the travel beforehand. And yes, probably this is what they do at resorts and at 6 star hotels like Ritz, but here? Wow, first impressions are already full marks.

Thereafter, the room is big for Japan standards, and everything else is amazing. A nice onsen for you to cleanse away the day's stress, walking distance to the Matsumoto castle (now one of my top castles) and the city art museum (which houses Yayoi Kusama's permanent collection).

Their breakfast is great too - whilst other hotels might give you lots of variety - Kagetsu is a model of giving you what you need. Fresh produce, great nutrition and taste, I never missed a day of breakfast during my stay.

I'm not sure there's an iron in the room but it's a very well equipped hotel so they have one at reception I guess.
