Travellers' Choice
Set in beautiful and tranquil surroundings, the Mount Meru Game Lodge is nestled between the Usa river and the sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to water buffalo, birds and monkeys, including the elusive Colobus monkey. Conveniently located just 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), the lodge is an ideal starting point for your safari. The lodge & sanctuary date back to 1959 when Dr. Von Nagy bought the property as a family home. The main building dates back to the 1930's and was originally the farm manager's house. In the first half of the 1900's most of the area on the southern slopes of Mount Meru were coffee plantations. Dr. Von Nagy's was passionate about animals and he quickly turned his family home into an animal sanctuary and orphanage. He setup the Mount Meru Wildlife Reserve in order to protect the wildlife on Mount Meru, what is now part of Arusha National Park. He also helped the government to establish the Wildlife Collage and used his animal sanctuary and orphanage as a training facility for the students. His home and passion attracted visitors from far and wide, rooms were added to accommodate his visitors and the lodge was born. The lodge is one of the oldest lodges in northern Tanzania. Great effort has been made to keep the lodge as original as possible while at the same time offering some of the modern day comforts. The lodge has grown in popularity over the years and our visitors have included numerous presidents as well as members of European Royal families. When Dr. Von Nagy retired in the 1980’s, the animal orphanage stopped taking on orphaned animals. The Mount Meru Game lodge remains in family hands till today and the family look forward to offering you a memorable experience during your stay in Arusha.

What a beautiful lodge! Great WiFi, campfire, pool, watering hole to watch the zonkey, birds, water buffalos. Colbus monkeys were neat to see. Service and food was great! Bungalows were beautiful and beds comfortable! Loved this lodge and wish we could have enjoyed it longer but we had to get to safari!

Our visit to the lodge exceeded our expectations. It was beautiful!!! Every part of our experience was wonderful. This is a unique and special place. There are many lodges and places to stay in the area and no place is like this. The family history and the way the lodge has modernized yet kept its old traditional feel is remarkable. There is no other like it! Watching buffalo and zebra while while eating breakfast!!! What a treat! From first arriving at reception, to our rooms, the food, and the animals, it was all around wonderful. The staff were amazing!!! They were kind, helpful, knowledgeable, sweet and fun. They were all wonderful english speakers and made us feel welcome and safe from the moment we arrived. The Mount Meru Game Lodge is a gem! Thank you Zummi and all who make it possible!

A nice, relaxing convenient stay before going on safari the next day. Beautiful grounds with animals that been donated or rehabilitated-- water buffalo, zebra, birds. And monkeys of 3 different types that just showed up--blue monkey, vervet, and black/white colobus. It was a fine way to work on camera skills before some serious photography on the safari. Very entertaining area. A great look at a Hadada ibis and a sacred ibis. There was a large pool. We stayed in stand-alone duplex units, each with a front patio, couch, etc. around the pond with the animals. I believe that there are rooms by the pool area or another area to the side, although we did not notice them. The rooms are nice, and big enough. Large bathroom. Not crowded at all. A beautiful patio that you can have a drink at or eat in. Good food that is ordered from a menu, beautiful dining area to eat inside or outside. The lodge was wonderful—nice rooms, beautiful patio to eat out on. Great stay for a night!

After a long and tiresome flight we had a one night stop at the Mount Meru Game Lodge where they held the kithchen open late for us to have dinner and were nothing but serviceminded when we arrived. A lovely place to relax and refuel. Very good food, a large and yummy breakfast and good service.

This was our second visit to Tanzania, and a repeat stay at Mount Meru Game Lodge, an oasis of abundant plant and bird life conveniently located in Usa River midway between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha. A sparkling swimming pool, good coffee, delicious breakfasts of hot, buttery porridge and syrupy pancakes, and lunches and dinners of wood-fired pizzas, tricolor salads, schnitzels and curries, are just some of the highlights of our stay at this historical property, which was first established as a family home in 1959. The main restaurant occupies the original farmhouse building, while the reception area displays photos of the Von Nagy family, conveying some of the history of the place and its surroundings. Another notable aspect is the friendly and attentive service, which adds to the lodge's welcoming, home-from-home feel. We slept exceptionally well in our comfortable and tastefully appointed suite. Overall, there's a tangible sense of wellbeing and peace that one experiences in the lodge environment, the perfect spot from which to springboard onwards on safari, or stay a few nights on the way home again. All set against the backdrop of the calls of an array of wild birds, including a pair of fish eagles, a flock of crown cranes and a gaggle of yellow-billed storks, not to mention the cries of the resident peacocks that roam the grounds. Thank you to all at Mount Meru Game Lodge for a most memorable stay!
