When booking hotels in Arusha there is a few things that are important to must traveling to the area. This hotel is a good ways from Kilimanjaro Airport, but not far from Arusha Airstrip. The hotel is in a busier area of town but still pretty quite. The grounds are very well landscaped and they use a lot of fresh vegetables that they raise on property. The hotel is clean, contemporary, and staff are very pleasant. There are three restaurants on site and they can be busy, especially the Roof top bar.
If your thinking safari this place isn't really that kind of location, but the facilities and grounds are super. This is a good location to end your safari plans or to get them started. When booking a room the Meru side is very nice; however, during the rainy season my make it challenging since the volcano is in the clouds most of the time.

The Gran Melia is a modern hotel in the heart of Arusha with surprisingly lush gardens and coffee fields. We stayed two times - at the start and end of our trip. The staff is excellent, and the rooms sizable and very comfortable. We had beautiful views off the balcony of the pool and Mount Meru. We ate three times at the rooftop restaurant - all very good. And the breakfast buffet was very well appointed with something for everyone - including Tanzanian, Spanish and American specialties. We walked the lush gardens and were given an impromptu and lovely tour of the vegetable and coffee farm by one of the horticulturalists. One of the highlights of our stay was a visit to Sanaa, a cooperative located on property that makes and sells beautiful crafts - glassware, clothing, bags, jewelry and much more. You can watch them making various pieces, or simply shop and enjoy their lovely restaurant and coffee bar. It was wonderful to learn that the Gran Melia - despite being a large Spanish hotelier - orders much of their art and housewares for the Arusha location from Sanaa. We enjoyed our stay so much I have looked up the locations of other Gran Melia hotels so I can visit again!

I cannot remember a better hotel stay ever! This is a 5 star experience from top to bottom in every nook and cranny. The Mount Meru views are well worth it when the shy mountain shows herself. This must be among the larger swimming pools I have ever seen. Weather didn’t permit me to sample it. The room shower with a double head and a controlled temperature 40c is awesome.
Service is a little short in several areas especially if you don’t deposit your credit card at check in. The pay as you go option can have some really unpleasant surprises.
Afronia and Winnie in the dinning room were awesome. Afronia got me some cashews after I told her there had been none at the cereal stand for two days, in a cashew nut country. She even had them roasted for me. Winnie the Barrista gave me the best americano ever.
I loved the coffee plantation and the walking/running paths in it. I wasn’t able to find someone to talk to about the coffee. They are doing things in Tanzania that we don’t do in Uganda.
The hotel scents of lime and honey had me sanitizing my hands at every opportunity. Pity there was none on offer for sale.
The Inaya products in the spa are an excellent choice and have me hooked!

Breakfast is great. There is both Kiswahili cuisine and standard cuisine. Good coffee.

Pool 50m!

Room service is unstable in time, toothbrushes carried an hour, notebooks per minute.

Restiq on the roof is terrible - forget orders, cheat with the cooking time (promised 20min, eventually brought 1.5 hours), add to the bill extra.

But it's still one of the best options in Tanzania.

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment in a recent incident that occurred during my stay at Gran Melia in Tanzania. As a guest who had just enjoyed a wonderful safari experience, I was looking forward to relaxing in the hotel's gym and spa facilities. Unfortunately, my visit to the steam room and sauna was marred by a disturbing encounter.

Upon attempting to access the facilities at 3.30PM on Sunday, I was shocked to find a man sprawled on the floor of the changing room, blocking access to the shower, toilet, steam room, and sauna. When I politely asked him to move so that I could use the facilities, he responded aggressively and claimed to be a Tanzanian MP, stating that the area was reserved exclusively for VVIP individuals like himself. His behavior was not only unacceptable but also disruptive to other guests.

I reported this incident to the reception, only to be met with a lack of action and a sense of intimidation from the staff. It was disheartening to learn that this individual, identified as MP Mrisho Gambo, has a history of such behavior and is known for abusing his position of power at the hotel. This raises serious concerns about the hotel's handling of such situations and the safety of its guests.

As a guest who paid a premium for a luxurious experience, I find it completely unacceptable that government officials like Mr. Gambo are allowed to disrupt the peace and comfort of other guests. It is the responsibility of the hotel management to ensure that all guests are treated with respect and have equal access to the amenities provided.

I urge the management to take immediate action to address this issue and ensure that the hotel remains a safe and welcoming environment for all guests. Nobody, regardless of their status, should be above the rules and regulations that govern the proper conduct in a hospitality setting.

I trust that you will address this matter promptly and effectively to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

I frequently stay at Gran Melia for work while in Arusha but this holiday season I am with my family and stayed in the junior suite, which is a much larger and more comfortable room - it was worth the extra cost! Especially having a toddler with us, the additional space with a kitchen and living room made the trip feel at home.

The staff, especially the resident general manager, provided above-and-beyond customer service for our family. I have been to many hotels in Tanzania and the services provided at Gran Melia are the best bar none! Enjoy the breathtaking views of Mount Meru, coffee sourced directly from the hotel gardens and the beautiful decor made by the Sanaa Boutique which is walkable through the gardens.

I would highly recommend this hotel for work, leisure and family stays!

My wife and I stayed at the Gran Melia Arusha as part of post Mt. Kilimanjaro expedition. We thankfully booked here by Altezza Tours. This hotel is easily the nicest hotel we experienced in the area, and we couldn't be more pleased with our experience as guests.

The staff is efficient, and you'll likely be greeted by a host with a tray of warm face cloths and a cold beverage when you arrive. Our room was modern and quiet, and we had several tasty meals in the buffet. I highly recommend this hotel.

This property is gorgeous inside and out. It blends so well with the environment and is not an eye sore. The grounds are gorgeous for walking and the pool is beautiful too. I was easily able to check in early which made me so happy because I needed to sleep after travel. It was nice to not have to fuss about that. The nature of safaris and long travel may mean odd check in times.

Bed was cozy and comfortable. I loved the turn down service and snuggling in my bed at night. The bathroom was cleaned and checked so my room always was clean.

The dining options are great. I recommend the rooftop bar at sunset. Always make a reservation so you can have your desired seating with a good view, even it may not be crowded. Breakfast has a great variety. The view of Mt. Meru is spectacular. The lighting in the bedroom and plugs are well placed, modern and well thought out. I can see my face when I'm getting ready in the bathroom!

The property is clean and well maintained. It is close to the market and other locations. I used the spa twice which was amazing service for a scrub and massage. The second time I used it for the foot journey treatment. Both left me feeling relaxed and happy. The smell and products used are also amazing. The gym and sauna are wonderful as well.

Lastly, the service is perfect. Everyone is so kind from check-in, to the restaurants, and to the manager Ashish who was a great help when I was confused. I enjoyed my stay at this hotel twice in December. I stayed there on the front and back end of my trip to Tanzania and I will definitely stay here again.

The hotel has a decoration as if it had been decorated 20 years ago and stayed there.

The rooms are very modern and well-kept, perhaps a little small, but both they and the bathrooms are very good.

The service was terrible if we look at the room service and wonderful if we talk about the breakfast.

The breakfast was without a doubt the best of the trip. Room service the worst. 20 people arrived at 12 at night, 10 children without dinner. We ordered dinner, it took in some cases an hour and a half to make and go up to the rooms (the restaurant was closed) a sandwich or a pizza (the children were dead and hungry after 12 hours of travel. For a hotel SO EXPENSIVE that it cannot Serving 10 children's meals at whatever time seems like a pretty big mistake to me.

The breakfast, as I say, wonderful (it may be because some of us were so hungry that when we gave us an approximate delivery time for the food we didn't ask for it)

Gran Melia, Gran Melia, Gran Melia – oh, how you’ve changed!
We’ve visited a restaurant at Gran Melia called “The Rooftop” countless times, and it was always fine no weirdness, no drama. But then came December 17th, 2024, and suddenly, we were met by a hostess with a face that could melt steel, one who looked at us like we were the last thing she wanted to see that day. She basically told us, in a tone you could cut with a knife, that we couldn’t sit on the balcony unless we could fork out 45k Tshs per person, after we already told her we were just there for dinner. She reluctantly seated us on the balcony, like it was a burden, and then vanished into thin air.

We ordered the steak (which, by the way, was *chef’s kiss*), but then... it started raining. The waiter dashed to help the couple behind us get inside, but my sister and I were left out there to fend for ourselves in the downpour. So, like any reasonable people would, we went inside to find a dry spot. But surprise every table had a "reserved" sign, and no one seemed to care that we were standing there, drenched and holding our plates like confused penguins. Eventually, we made the bold decision to sit at one of the "reserved" tables, and *finally* a waiter came to find us a proper seat. At least we finished our meal… and left.

I thought, "Maybe it was just a fluke, a one-off disaster." But no, on February 23rd, 2024, after nearly two months of reflection on that traumatic experience, my sister, my brother, and I decided to give you another shot. Guess what? The same hostess (with glasses, of course) greeted us again, this time giggling with a friend. She gave us the *same* judgmental look and smirked when we walked in. She asked if we had a reservation, and when we said no, she asked if we were there to eat or drink. *We came to eat, duh*. She finally seated us, handed us menus, and disappeared like magic.

When the waitress came to take our order, everything seemed fine until my brother asked for the Wi-Fi password. She nodded robotically, recited the order, and walked off. Then came the steak debacle. We ordered two medium-rare steaks, but they brought us one medium and one medium-rare. My sister politely pointed out the mistake, but the waiter *deadpanned* that, actually, one was medium, and one was medium-rare. I had to chime in and remind him what we *actually* ordered, only for him to repeat the same thing like a broken record. Are your staff members part robot? Because if they’re hearing impaired, I’m starting to understand why the service feels like an awkward social experiment.

As for the steak itself, it was good but not as good as last time. So, Gran Melia, here’s a tip: You might want to train your staff in basic service skills, because that was *not* it. We also noticed that people came in, walked right past the hostess, and sat wherever they liked, so... is being stopped by the hostess a special privilege? Are we being profiled? Because that’s just a little too weird.

All in all, I think this relationship has run its course. It’s not us, it’s you.

Dear Grace, Warm greetings from Gran Melia Arusha. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We truly regret that your recent visits to our Rooftop restaurant did not meet your expectations. Ensuring every guest feels welcomed and well cared for is our priority, and we sincerely apologize if you felt otherwise. We would also like to clarify that our balcony seating requires a minimum spend per guest, which is a standard policy to ensure all guests can enjoy this exclusive space. We regret if this was not communicated clearly during your visit, and we will work on making this policy more transparent moving forward. Your comments regarding service and staff interactions are concerning, and we take them seriously. We will be addressing these matters internally to ensure that our team delivers the warm and attentive service that we strive for. We are grateful for your past visits and the time you took to provide this feedback. Should you choose to return, we would love the opportunity to offer you a more seamless and enjoyable experience. Best regards, Guest Experience Team.
