2021 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Set in lush gardens amid forest and crystal clear waters on the slopes of Mount Meru, Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge is a wonderful place to relax and simmer in the immense beauty of East Africa. The Lodge has been adapted from an early colonial farmhouse built in the early 20th century and it is one of the oldest family lodges in Arusha. It offers only 10 garden rooms, 2 main house suites and pool cottage with 2 bedrooms, and provides personal service for its residents since 1974. Here you can spend the days amid nature, watching the changing colors of the Kilimanjaro glaciers while sipping drinks on the verandah or hiking in the forest inhabited by colobus and Sykes monkeys as well as hundreds of small animal and bird species. The Lodge is located only 30 minutes away from Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha town center and it is a perfect base while on safari in the northern circuit Tanzania.

Very pretty setting, and unique property. My sister and I enjoyed walking the outer loop and seeing monkeys, colorful birds and the horses. This was maybe the warmest of the pools we experienced in Tanzania, but still extremely chilly. Had an amazing massage in the spa tent. Highly recommend the massage. Dinner was excellent and there is a nice selection of beer and wine. Great gift shop with pretty jewelry and some of the most reasonable prices we saw on this trip. While I appreciate the private dining spots, I did not care for the one they chose for us right by the water. Lots of steps, dusty and bugs, Not a comfortable breakfast spot and so far removed. I would also prefer to just order a plate of food over the buffet of items put out on the table. I appreciate the effort, but that part was a fail for both of us. All in all, a really pretty place though.

Great staff, everyone was very friendly and we felt immediately welcomed. The rooms are very clean, the food is so good and delicious! The green outside area with pool is very nice and perfect for relaxing! Highly recommended and the short distance to the Arusha National Park is very convenient.

Ngare Sero was recommended by friends but even their high praise or photos on the website didn't prepare us for quite how lovely this lodge is. Our welcome on arrival was warm with dinner waiting despite arriving late in the evening. The next morning at breakfast we became aware of how beautiful and tranquil this lodge is. The rooms are spacious and extremely comfortable. All the staff we met during our stay were incredibly helpful and attentive including Andrew and Shafina who served our meals. Each meal was served in a different location. Our favourite spot was breakfast under shade down by the water watching herons and giant kingfishers. The food was a real highlight, as much as possible is grown onsite or locally sourced. All was beautifully cooked or prepared. We really enjoyed the pool which is spotlessly maintained and surrounded by forest, it is just one more tranquil spot in the grounds. We also walked the forest trail spotting colobus and sykes monkeys and different hornbills. We spent 2 nights at Ngare Sero and didn't want to leave and are already planning when we might return

I was recommended Ngare Sero by a friend. And it very much exceeded my expectations. We were escaping the intense summer heat of the Gulf with two toddlers in tow, so were not expecting an action packed holiday. We stayed for two weeks. Most people who stay there, stay for between two and four nights. The setting is incredible. It’s nice enough to just stay in the grounds for days on end as we did. We stayed in the farm cottage up the back of the property. Built in the 1950s it was a quaint free standing property with its own massive garden - complete with monkeys and hornbills in the trees. There’s a fantastic upstairs balcony which we regularly sat on in the evening - or to work from during the day. My wife did a week of remote work while there. The wifi could be a touch patchy, but it worked well enough to do Zoom calls and the like. Katya and Joel organised any trips as well as a wonderful birthday party setup for our kids. Their driver (and all-round Mr Fix-it) Ombeni took us to Arusha National Park for the day. Having done the Mara in Kenya I was pleasantly surprised. Because of all the forest, the smaller grasslands are packed with wildlife. We did an hour walk to a waterfall seeing giraffe up close along the way. I highly recommend for young families. There were some sporadic power cuts. The property is powered by its own hydroelectric, which occasionally cut out. But it was never for more than 5-10 minutes. The food was incredible, coming from the Park Hyatt in Stone Town we’d been spoiled. And the food at NS even topped that. You could tell that there was a lot of love put into making the food, most of it coming fresh from the gardens on the property. Oh and some great local craft beer on tap which was a nice change to the lagers. All the servers from Mudi, to Andrew, Ombeni… and others, including all the housekeeping staff were great - and were so sweet to our daughters. You really got the sense that they loved working there and were happy. We really felt welcomed like family. I have recommended to others on the rest of our trip looking to stay in Arusha, and we’d definitely return.
