I have been to Antigua many times and stayed in many hotels. I chose this one after my favourite closed down. First it’s a couple blocks from Parque Central which is great. I stayed in a single room which was nicely decorated, airy, bright, and very clean. I had a hot enough shower which can be an issue in Antigua with its electric showers. There is a place to fill up water bottles which I love and the upstairs terrace was great to relax. There is also a kitchen which I didn’t use. Staff were friendly and helpful and the price was reasonable for one person. I suspect there has been a change with management/staff as there was no dog as previous reviews spoke about (and which was fine with me). This hotel will be my new go-to in Antigua.

Serious safety incident
So the last night there we had a security guard try and come in assuming we were drunk or something and get in the room with 2 girls touching them inappropriately. He was asked to leave and he did for a few minutes but tried coming back with 3 additional guys to get in the room. They eventually gave up but such a horrible experience specially from the overnight guard.

Response from 766hostala, Gerente at Hostal Antigua
Responded 26 Feb 2020
This was reported to the reception from a brother of one of the girls because ones they did the check-out they never mentioned nothing, so ones the bother came to the reception (he was not staying at the hostel) we checked the cameras and no one tried to come in their room and yes they were drunk the room was for 2 and they had an additional person in it (the hostel didn’t charge for the additional person) after they left we checked all the recordings and there was 3 guys but they were staying in one of the rooms and they were coming in and out they never did try to go in the girls room. We even told the brother that they could go to the police and leave a report to them but it need it to be done by the supposedly affected, so later the day the 3 girls came back but they were across the street so the manager went and asked them what was the problem that a guy came to the hostel calling every one stupid asking for the owners name, all the girls said was ooh we don’t know what happened and we don’t know what time we got back last night, all they were asking was if it was possible to give them the money back. For safety reason the security guard was dismissed after this was reported.

We stayed here for 4 nights. Our room was basic and clean. Loved saying hi to the dogs on the way in and out. Great location. The kitchen upstairs was pretty basic - didn't end up using, but ask at front desk (we asked for wine opener and they had).

The Hostal Antigua is a beautiful and tranquil hostel, located just two blocks from the central plaza. The hostel itself was very clean, the beds in the dorm were comfortable and provided a lot of privacy due to curtains around every bed. The rooftop terrace is beautiful and the kitchen is equipped well. The staff was really friendly and caring! I stayed for about a week in this hostel and I would come back anytime, really recomendable!

Was the most quiet little Hostal with great customer service. Fell in love with their dog. Despite the fact that they have a no smoking policy and to be quiet on certain hours I enjoyed staying there. Great vibes.Definitely coming back.

Everything about Hostel Antigua was perfect. The staff were very helpful. The manager speaks English as well. The rooms are very clean and a decent size. The bonus is they have a little puppy that comes and greets everyone. What’s not to like.

This a a quaint hostel in Antigua that was exactly what we were hoping for when we arrived. The staff is very helpful and kind. They even held our large suitcases when we went on a trip outside Antigua for a few days. Great hostel in this process range.

My bed was so hard that my wife took the other single bed as she could not sleep on the hard double. Lucky for her as I endured multiple bed bug bites and she got away scott free. Still itching now as I write this. Expedia promised 15m2 but had a room size of thimble but the great staff sorted it next day. Thanks. Roof top is great for breakfast. Kitchen good for basic meal only. Good for the price.

Very clean with a great location. I stayed in a mixed dorm for three nights and slept well. Hostal Antigua is perfect if you would like a quiet place to lay your head. Don’t expect to meet traveling companions here, though. Maria is extremely helpful, with suggestions on where to eat, bank, shop and take Spanish language classes.

We stayed in the double room with private bath, and could not fault Hostal Antigua. We also organised several shuttles with the hotel, all of which we found easy, reliable and economical. The staff are wonderful, and even let us check I. early (lucky us) at 10.30 am, after a long overnight trip from Flores (I did let them know this in an email if you’re thinking this sounds good)! Would definitely stay there again, considering how clean it was, and the hot shower, comfy bed + great price!
