This hotel was booked as part of a tour via Audley Travel covering Panama and Costa Rica.

Our first 3 nights were spent at this hotel in Central Casco Viejo the old city of Panama. We used it as a base to discover the area and we had two and a half days to use the time. The hotel is a late 1800’s building which has been the home of RCA Records, various trade organizations and a hotel.

We found the rooms spacious, typically South American furnished with large hard wood furniture in good condition, large shower rooms with excellent facilities and very tidy decoration. We stayed in 203 which was a second floor room overlooking the main square. Despite this being quite vibrant at night we had no noise intrusion from the square itself, no intrusion from either adjoining rooms or the common areas of the hotel. the hotel has a large library on the second floor with some extraordinary books in it, a wonderful place to while away some spare time. The hotel has a roof top pool which tends to be out of the sun quite a lot and a small terrace and has good reception areas where people tend to congregate for a coffee and general hanging around.

The restaurant has a reasonable light menu at comparatively good prices, its a pleasant dining experience at lunch off dinner and that staff are competent, extremely pleasant .

The hotel itself is well cared from given its age, it is considered luxury although I would not say it was particularly luxurious, but its a very competent place, with what we found were great staff, friendly, helpful and it provided us a real home from home for the three days we were there.

Check out is 12.00 which is good by European standards and on the right day its a half hour from the airport, 20 minutes from the Panama Canal attraction via taxi and about 15 minutes cab ride from the new city once you get tired of wandering its narrow streets.

I would recommend it.

There are two other newer options which we did not visit and which have only opened in 2023 which are probably more expensive than the American Trade Hotel but given that we used it as a base I’m not sure it would be worth upgrading or looking for anything better for our purposes. generally very happy with the service here.

We stayed here for three nights in a panoramic room with great views across to the high rise city from the old town and across to the boats on the water. You can hear the church bells which wasn’t a problem for us but might be if you want to sleep late. Large room, air con worked fine, clean. Plenty of toiletries. Very limited coffee facilities just capsule coffee and paper cups. Probably because of covid. Plenty of hand sanitisers around and all staff wear masks and or shields. Unlike some of the older American guests who seem to think wearing masks didn’t apply to them. A common occurrence we found on several occasions while every one else respected the laws of the country.
We only eat breakfast here. Great yogurt and fruit and then selection of various eggs and potatoes, pancakes, all freshly cooked and served at table. No buffet.
Good location to explore the old town on foot.

We stayed at the American Trade Hotel for two nights in Dec 2019 in the last stop of our honeymoon before flying home.

The hotel itself is stunning. The architecture and detail of the rooms feels very luxurious- it’s been renovated very well and there is a true essence of history and culture to the building. The beds were large and comfy and the bathroom was a good size.

Jonathan and Matthew on the front desk were two of our favourite people we met in Panama! So kind, funny and willing to help! There was quite a lot of noise on the first night due to a wedding next door so they helped us move to a slightly quieter room - and were just pretty awesome guys - thank you Jon and Matthew!

Panama City is a lively city that really comes to life at night. The ATH is located in the inner hub of the city where there’s lots of nightlife. It’s great to walk around and feel the buzz; but with that also means it is not the quietest of all hotels. They do provide ear plugs etc but just be prepared for that.

All in all, we enjoyed our time at the ATH and would recommend it.

The American Trade Hotel in Panama City is a beautiful property in a great location and that’s the reason I’m giving it a three-star review. Based on the price we paid, which was a premium, I was expecting the service and amenities to be on par with other four and five-star hotels that we have stayed at but that was not the case. Our room wasn’t cleaned properly, the pool was small and looked a bit dirty and the staff were pleasant at best but seemed quite untrained and uninterested in hospitality. Hot water was spotty throughout our vacation so if you are used to hot water on-demand, you will be disappointed.

Here is my overall score for simplicity:

Location: A
Hotel appearance: A
Staff: C
Cleanliness: C
Price: Expensive
Overall experience: C

I would not recommend this hotel to my friends. It is a beautiful property with a great location so if that is your priority, this may be an option for you when you visit Panama City. This was one of the more disappointing experiences we have had in our travels to date based on the premium price we paid.

I never write reviews but this has to be said.. overall would not stay here again…

Pros:
Location is probably the best you’ll get in Panama City, especially during covid times, even though many of the local shops & restaurants have shut down there is still life and fun vibes throughout the day & night. We had a gorgeous balcony overlooking the square.
The service was excellent. Really attentive front desk and helpful staff.
Room service was good, 4/5 — they’ll customize their menu for you on request.

Cons:
The room was just not on par with what I would expect for $600/night. Dirty dirty dirty, smelled like mold. There was actual mold all over the hallway ceilings. When we first walked into our room, the floors were dusty and there was trash from the previous tenant on the floor and in the shower stall. (Warning TMI) There was also poop splatter on the toilet from the last guest!! And the lamps and ceiling fans were so so dusty my entire family had an allergy attack when we turned them on. We stayed in the 1 bedroom suite and the couch smelled like wet dog. Also the TV in the living room didn’t work, we asked for it to be repaired but they couldn’t get any channels on it… we literally booked this room so my husband & I could watch TV in the living room together while our daughter slept in the bedroom so that was a flop.

Restored with a mid-century style, this hotel is right in the middle of busy Casco Viejo, just a short walk from so many wonderful restaurants and bars. Despite being on a noisy road, I slept very soundly. The pool on the 3rd floor was very refreshing on hot days (which is every day, of course), and the restaurant did a wonderful job on our breakfasts and one dinner. The Jazz club next door was quite a treat, and Matthew the concierge was extremely helpful in recommending restaurants and getting reservations for us.

The hotel is gorgeous and comfortable. The service was great. The rooftop pool was a great bonus. Unfortunately due to location it is loud at night, like loud enough they leave earplugs in the rooms. Our kids managed to sleep through the noise, but we didn’t. Loved the balcony looking over the street and loved the neighborhood. Probably a great spot for a kid-free or couples vacation.

The hotel is fantastic. We had a panaramic room and utilized most of the facilities at the hotel. The food is really good and we had mostly breakfast in the lobby restaurant or through room service. We were there for a wedding so were not as concerned with the noise issue. We found all the staff to be friendly, competent and went out their way to help.

The location is awesome. Its a short distance to everything with uber service to anything else you might want to do. We did a catamaran out to Tortuga island and played a round of golf at Tucan.

The hotel supplies ear plugs for those that maybe concerned with the noise. Most of the time we were at one of the numerous rooftop bars so it wasn't an issue.

The hotel is located on a lovely square in the Casco Viejo neghborhood of Panama City. It is surrounded by great restaurants, good shopping, and lovely old buildings.
Our room was spacious and had a lovely view of the church behind the hotel. There were enough outlets and the bathroom water pressure was good.
Breakfast every morning was delicious and included fresh fruit and juice, hot chocolate for me, a cappucino for my wife, breads, and and entree from the menu - the eggs benedict were my favorite. Service was attentive and prompt.

The balcony overlooking the square was an unexpected bonus, the small pool was welcome (if rather dirty), but almost everything else a big disappointment. The only information available was a menu - with nothing about hours. In fact the downstairs areas were often devoid of customers and staff. No coffee shop, no evening restaurant, no mention there would be a New Year’s Eve event, nothing about checkout times etc. The television had a brief advert for the hotel but no programs had been loaded or seemed loadable. Breakfast was dismal. Orders would be brought in the wrong order or not at all. The coffee was amongst the worst we have ever tasted. The orange juice was out of a plastic carton Do not pay for breakfast; go elsewhere. Such a sad experience in this lovely building.

Hello Mirthasc, In Panama we use the same outlets as in the U.S. so there shouldn´t be a problem of voltage when it comes to hair tools. Happy to help!

I admit I haven't been there in 30 years and I'm sure things have changed, but since no one else has answered in all this time I will take a shot at answering. I took a tour. It left not from PTY, but another smaller airport in town. The plane was very late because it was raining. No way to find out how late it would be because the plane had no radio. It was a very small prop plane with benches instead of seats. Actually there were 4 seats. The pilot had one, I had one the other two were occupied by airmen from Ellsworth Airforce Base in South Dakota. They had flown down a plane for use by our country in their secret war against Noriega. The pilot fiddled with instruments a lot and when we landed the Air Force guy who had sat in the co-pilots seat told us there were no instruments. We landed on wet grass that was over 3 feet high. We then got into an open boat the majority of which was covered by patches. We saw the natives running around in jeans and tshirts but when they spotted us coming they changed in costume and later charged us to take pictures of them. There was a small pool in front of the hotel filled with lobsters. We each picked the one we wanted for lunch. It was one of the best lunches I have ever had. We were supposed to go to another of the islands but it started to rain. Most of usgot back in the broken down boat and the captain pulled out this large tarp that we all held up over our heads. We then boarded our yellow plane and flew back to the city. Some people, including the airmen stayed in the hotel so they could go diving the next day. The hotel was built in the native style and the walls did not go to the ceiling. A very strange adventure, but one I am so glad to have had.
