Our first 3 nights were spent at this hotel in Central Casco Viejo the old city of Panama. We used it as a base to discover the area and we had two and a half days to use the time. The hotel is a late 1800’s building which has been the home of RCA Records, various trade organizations and a hotel.
We found the rooms spacious, typically South American furnished with large hard wood furniture in good condition, large shower rooms with excellent facilities and very tidy decoration. We stayed in 203 which was a second floor room overlooking the main square. Despite this being quite vibrant at night we had no noise intrusion from the square itself, no intrusion from either adjoining rooms or the common areas of the hotel. the hotel has a large library on the second floor with some extraordinary books in it, a wonderful place to while away some spare time. The hotel has a roof top pool which tends to be out of the sun quite a lot and a small terrace and has good reception areas where people tend to congregate for a coffee and general hanging around.
The restaurant has a reasonable light menu at comparatively good prices, its a pleasant dining experience at lunch off dinner and that staff are competent, extremely pleasant .
The hotel itself is well cared from given its age, it is considered luxury although I would not say it was particularly luxurious, but its a very competent place, with what we found were great staff, friendly, helpful and it provided us a real home from home for the three days we were there.
Check out is 12.00 which is good by European standards and on the right day its a half hour from the airport, 20 minutes from the Panama Canal attraction via taxi and about 15 minutes cab ride from the new city once you get tired of wandering its narrow streets.
I would recommend it.
There are two other newer options which we did not visit and which have only opened in 2023 which are probably more expensive than the American Trade Hotel but given that we used it as a base I’m not sure it would be worth upgrading or looking for anything better for our purposes. generally very happy with the service here.
We only eat breakfast here. Great yogurt and fruit and then selection of various eggs and potatoes, pancakes, all freshly cooked and served at table. No buffet.
Good location to explore the old town on foot.
The hotel itself is stunning. The architecture and detail of the rooms feels very luxurious- it’s been renovated very well and there is a true essence of history and culture to the building. The beds were large and comfy and the bathroom was a good size.
Jonathan and Matthew on the front desk were two of our favourite people we met in Panama! So kind, funny and willing to help! There was quite a lot of noise on the first night due to a wedding next door so they helped us move to a slightly quieter room - and were just pretty awesome guys - thank you Jon and Matthew!
Panama City is a lively city that really comes to life at night. The ATH is located in the inner hub of the city where there’s lots of nightlife. It’s great to walk around and feel the buzz; but with that also means it is not the quietest of all hotels. They do provide ear plugs etc but just be prepared for that.
All in all, we enjoyed our time at the ATH and would recommend it.

I would not recommend this hotel to my friends. It is a beautiful property with a great location so if that is your priority, this may be an option for you when you visit Panama City. This was one of the more disappointing experiences we have had in our travels to date based on the premium price we paid.
Pros:
Location is probably the best you’ll get in Panama City, especially during covid times, even though many of the local shops & restaurants have shut down there is still life and fun vibes throughout the day & night. We had a gorgeous balcony overlooking the square.
The service was excellent. Really attentive front desk and helpful staff.
Room service was good, 4/5 — they’ll customize their menu for you on request.
Cons:
The room was just not on par with what I would expect for $600/night. Dirty dirty dirty, smelled like mold. There was actual mold all over the hallway ceilings. When we first walked into our room, the floors were dusty and there was trash from the previous tenant on the floor and in the shower stall. (Warning TMI) There was also poop splatter on the toilet from the last guest!! And the lamps and ceiling fans were so so dusty my entire family had an allergy attack when we turned them on. We stayed in the 1 bedroom suite and the couch smelled like wet dog. Also the TV in the living room didn’t work, we asked for it to be repaired but they couldn’t get any channels on it… we literally booked this room so my husband & I could watch TV in the living room together while our daughter slept in the bedroom so that was a flop.
The location is awesome. Its a short distance to everything with uber service to anything else you might want to do. We did a catamaran out to Tortuga island and played a round of golf at Tucan.
The hotel supplies ear plugs for those that maybe concerned with the noise. Most of the time we were at one of the numerous rooftop bars so it wasn't an issue.
Our room was spacious and had a lovely view of the church behind the hotel. There were enough outlets and the bathroom water pressure was good.
Breakfast every morning was delicious and included fresh fruit and juice, hot chocolate for me, a cappucino for my wife, breads, and and entree from the menu - the eggs benedict were my favorite. Service was attentive and prompt.
