We just tried to book for our third return to this beautiful tropical paradise only to learn that it has closed for business as of August 31, 2014. We are so sad, for ourselves but also for the wonderful staff who must have lost the jobs they were so dedicated to and good at.

“Any photo of mine cannot justify the beauty of this place...” Slice of Paradise! Alegre Beach resort is definitely one for the books. Expensive but worth it. The hotel was few hours away from the city, we took a cab to get there. Staff were friendly & courteuos. Our room was clean & I love the tub! The ocean = clear water. Great for snorkeling! 👌 Great for families & friends!

We were at Alegre Beach in August '05 and we had the most fun time! My husband and I were more than impressed with the whole experience!
The staff is very HELPFUL, polite, friendly all the time. Our roomy cabana is perched on a cliff by the water. The staff goes out of the way to help you with what you need. Everymorning, as you drink your coffee by the porch overlooking the water, you read the daily paper, and everyday the hotel has a free tray of fresh fruits and drinking water (on top of what major hotel amenities customarily provide.) We got Fresh orchids every day! The hotel grows its own orchid in the property.
Each cabana is separated from the others that even in full capacity, one may not notice that the hotel was packed. There's several steps to the beach, and staff cater to your needs for a drink or a meal if you decide not to go to the restaurant.
A sumptuos buffet breakfast greets you with lots of choices catering to every palate. Lunch and dinner is usually sit down, but the staff is so friendly, makes me feel I'm with my family. On certain occasions, the hotel offers guests witha different ambience or motiff. The decor is Spanish/Mediterranean with a Pacific flair. The restaurant overlooks both the ocean and the huge pool on one side. There's a bar that opens out to the deck. Birds and local wildlife at times invite one's attention.
I was so pleased with the activities the hotel offers. We did the dolphin/sunset and dinner cruises, island hopping to remote islands. Instructors are available at all times if your thrill is deep sea diving, shallow water diving or snorkelling which is what we did everyday..The water is so clear and at a constant 80 degree temperature!!! The coral gardens are healthy and flourishing inviting fishes of all sorts of colors in. Aside from that, the staff assist younger visitors feed the fishes at any time in the shallow waters.
At tThe restaurant live enetertainment is provided in a wholesome atmosphere. The hotel is family-oriented, the staff reports most of their regular clientelle of 13 plus years come in alone and just get pampered.
There is a spa that melts the body to soothing massage and exotic smelling therapy provided by well trained staff.
Overall, it rejuvenated me physically, spiritually and it made my husband and myself closer. I look forward to going back there again this year!

My fiance and I booked a flight to Cebu without looking at hotels first - and then realized how hard it can be to find a unanimously good hotel in the area! So many hotels had negative reviews, and we began to worry. We wanted to find the right vacation spot for us where we could relax, and not feel like we were at a touristy resort. One place we liked was Abaca, but at almost $500US a night for just the room it seemed too expensive for our 4-night trip. Thankfully we stumbled upon Alegre!

We stayed Friday though Monday for Easter Weekend and checked out on Tuesday morning. Food was great - the restaurant serves delicious local fare and moves to different spots each night for dinner (there was a beach-side party-styled dinner the first night, a pool-side dinner the second, and we even had a 5-course private dinner one night overlooking the ocean from a cliff-side gazebo (the way they set it up with orchids scattered everywhere and our own personal waiter was like something off of the bachelor/bachelorette). There's also a quartet of musicians that comes around to each table and plays/sings songs by request.

Price-wise, this may be expensive as far as the Philippines goes because you need to buy all food and drink in the resort, but it was cheaper than in Hong Kong or NYC by far. Cocktails are around $3.50US if I remember correctly, which I was happy with - I was relaxing on the beach, not roughing it around Cebu City. One disappointment was that the gift shop was WAY expensive (paid about $27US for some spf 90 sunscreen because the sun was so strong) but that's to be expected anywhere.

Favorite part about Alegre is that it has its own coral reef which is a lot of fun to snorkel and scuba dive on. Tons of fish, quiet beach, other water sports also available. I wish we had taken one day to go island hopping on a boat, but that's probably a better activity for a family than just two of us.

Overall, this was one of the most relaxing trips I've ever had. I would recommend this place especially for couples looking to get away and relax, away from crowds, away from it all.

Truly a beautiful place!

I am VERY TORN about what rating to give Alegre, please read below and I think it will become clear why.

This resort is beautiful, well managed, one of their best attributes is their staff -- they are friendly, knowledgeable and go the extra mile for their guests. For example, they only have one restaurant and unless they have a BBQ, they have a limited menu. We found that if you ask, the Chef will always try to accommodate special lunch/dinner requests. The wait staff really tried to please everyone -- for example if you say you like certain tables, they will reserve them for you without you even asking.

Our room was spacious, it is a bit dated though. There were tons of spider's and their webs in the bathroom -- so kind of gross!

The beach is beautiful, snorkeling was great they have a fairly good stock of snorkeling and diving gear. Only one jet ski though.

When you leave the Cebu airport and pass over the bridge, you will have to travel on about a 90 minutes to 2 hours of a nail-biting journey to and from the resort. There are cars, bikes, motorcycles, buses, pedestrians and dogs all over the road. Sadly, when we got into the van to leave Alegre, I asked the driver to please be careful and drive slowly as we had plenty of time to get to the airport and please watch out for the dogs. Not 10 minutes into our drive, he hit and ran over a beautiful healthy dog -- we heard the screams of the poor creature and those on the road, it was traumatic for all and it ruined what should have been a wonderful vacation. The only real blame I can assign to the driver is that he never even thought about slowing down.

My suggestion to the resort is to use a boat to bring guests to and from the resort, this will avoid what can only be described as an unpleasant journey through a very impoverished area.

I have stayed at Alegre Resort 5 times over the past year and each visit is sheer bliss. Each time I return to Alegre there is a bottle of red wine in my room as a thank-you gift and it's a nice touch. My most recent visit was the 6th and 7th of February 2012.

As others have expressed, the resort is located 1,5-2hrs drive depending on traffic North from Cebu City along the coast. When booking the resort on the hotel website (or on other discount hotel websites) you can opt for a package that includes round-trip transportation from Cebu City, but as others have wrongly mentioned it is not included in all packages so make sure to read the package inclusions carefully before booking. Personally the transport is a very nice perk. If I had to pay extra for the service I would book somewhere closer to Cebu City like Shangri-La where it costs 300pesos (7Can dollars) for a taxi ride.

I usually visit Alegre weekdays and avoid the busier weekend and that makes the resort feel deserted at times even when the occupancy rate is around 75%. The resort is very well spaced and somehow it never feels crowded.

As mentioned before the resort is spread out above a cliff and overlooking the ocean which offers truly stunning views but also alot of walking up and down to get to the beach. If you are older or have limited mobility this can be an issue, but to me and my wife it's a plus and allows us a slight workout and keeps us in shape.

The restaurant is located overlooking the ocean and during the day offers sweeping views. On a clear day off to your left in the distance you can see Leyte, and to the right slightly you can see the Camotes Islands. In the evening if you sit near the railing the rope lighting makes for a very romantic dinner. Prices for meals are expensive for the Philippines and have increased 30-40% in the last year, but not out of line with other resorts such as Shangri-La.

The food is good and well presented and yes sometimes the service can be slow, (food will come 20-30mins after ordering) but you are on vacation not waiting for a flight at the airport so relax, have another drink and enjoy the evening. There is a German head chef working at Alegre and I have seen him a few times when there are other German guests he will often come out to speak with them and mingle abit when he is not busy.

The grounds are truly beautiful and very well maintained. The beach does have white sand but is not fine powder. The sand particles are ground up bits of coral and shells which makes it very easy to find small shells while walking the beach. The aqua sports is located on the third cove. Snorkel gear rental is not free as others have mentioned, but a one-time snorkel gear rental or one-time kayak rental is included in some packages. Read the package inclusions carefully.

They also offer jet-ski rental, several different snorkel trips offered on the Alegre banca, diving trips, padi certification, deep-sea fishing, and some evening-sunset cruises on the banca boat. All the activities mentioned are very expensive even by Western standards so make sure to inquire carefully about pricing before booking.

The resort is supposedly German owned and there is a German manager, but I have never seen a German manager at any time during my stays at Alegre.

I will now point out some of the negatives to Alegre, and some of these points are major and some minor but they should be mentioned.

The biggest negative is the pool. It looks great and a refreshing dip in the pool can be a nice treat after being at the beach all day or in the evening surrounded by romantic lighting after a nice meal but the pool requires major work. The filter pump system can be heard working in the room next to the stairs but it is all an illusion. Every suction point in the pool doesn't work, there is no water filtration or water movement in the pool and this problem has been going on for the past 6 months. Touch all of the suction vents in the pool and there is no water flow, the pool is stagnant with no chlorine treatment of any kind. That makes parts of the pool bottom slimy to the touch. The sides of the pool have become black in some sections and the blue paint is flaking off and when feels slimy to the touch. The lights underwater give off a nice glow after dark but are not properly secured and they are very loose when touched and with low electrical codes in the Philippines is just an accident waiting to happen.

Rooms 14-15 are older and have the older smaller bathtub. The lock to the small toilet area was broken in room 15 last trip. The matresses are getting kind of old in all the bungalows I have stayed in. Good quality European mattresses would make all the difference. Also the whole bathroom setup can be challenging if travelling with someone you are not very close with as the door to the toilet area is a see-through shower door. If a full-sized wooden door was installed it would eliminate the possible awkwardness. There are full sized wooden dividers that section off the bathroom area for more privacy but they are a pain in the rump to use honestly.

The TV's in the rooms are older and sometimes the remotes are broken and you have to get up to change the channel on the TV manually. There are only a few channels on TV. 12-15 if I remember correctly so don't expect alot of choices. The lack of TV channels didn't bother me, I just mention it in passing as I just arrived the morning of the Negros-Cebu earthquake and I turned on the TV to figure out what was going on, and more TV options would of been helpful.

All the bungalows I have stayed in have a door to the other adjoining room that can be opened only upon request from the front desk and can be great when someone you know is staying in the next room as you can walk freely from one room to the next. The downside begins when there is a smoker in the next room and even when the door is locked the smoke will still make its way under and into your room. I am a non-smoker so thought I would point that out. The whole adjoining door system seems outdated and they should do away with it. Much easier to open the sliding wooden doors on the balcony and use that as a way to gain access to the other room.

The pluses to staying at Alegre are.

The grounds are so well maintained, perfect and so very beautiful. The quiet nature of the resort makes you well rested. At night usually only the sound of waves on the beach, the wind rustling though palm trees and the occasional gecko can be heard, very very peaceful.

The staff are very helpful and never over-bearing. Some OJT's (On Job Training), students of hotel and restaurant courses working for job experience are hired in the dining room from time to time. They provide excellent care, just sometimes slow service due to there lack of knowledge. The checkin staff are excellent and are always around to solve any issues and they provide great service.

The balconies provided with each room are amazing to sit and relax. Good place to have a drink in the evening or let snorkel gear dry out and are a real bonus feature.

Each bungalow has it's own hot water provider and that makes for some nice long hot showers, a great treat after a long day at the beach, or lazing around the pool.

The beach area and marine sanctuary is just amazing. The amount of coral is stunning! I would recommend going out from the main cove (middle one) and snorkeling directly away from the beach. At first you will encounter some small weed beds and then some broken and sun-bleached coral sections, do not be discouranged! Keep going! After that when the water gets over 10+ feet the water clarity improves and the ocean bottom reveals a stunning array of coral. Some very large table-top coral with lenghts of over 20ft can be found in that section with many different types of sponges and coral, breathtaking! Three quarters of the way out you can see the white sand bottom 35ft below and there are some nice large coral outcroppings that appear and are 20 ft high and attract some nice fish. At the rope sectioned off limit on a calm day you can see the bottom at 50+ feet and a few bigger fish, after the rope the bottom drops off into the depths. On the other roped off section on the aqua sports side there are some large impressive table-top coral spanning 30+ ft, very cool.

While the number and amount of coral species is very impressive the number of fish is not as good as in other places off Mactan. The resort needs to do a better job to protect the fish population and to educate the local fishermen so they do not strip the fish resource bare. Mostly smaller reef fish at Alegre.

A few days stay at Alegre is just prefect for me and my wife and allows us to rest and recharge our batteries. A week would be too long and we would get bored.

My husbad and I stayed at Alegre Beach Resort from April 24 - 27. The 1-1/2hr trip from the airport to the hotel was pleasant. There was somebody already waiting for us as we step out of the terminal. The staff are all friendly, specially Felix, the night bartender. Alegre has beautiful rooms/cabanas and all are overlooking the ocean. The room was fairly spacious and clean, with a tub (for one) and a separate shower and toilet. The pool was big and is also overlooking the beach.

The food selection is fairly decent and the seafood were all fresh! Good thing the food is good since there won't be another restaurant for miles and miles. There would be a shuttle bus at given days during the week that will take you to the city for shopping, other than that -- plan to stay in the resort most of the time -- including luch and dinner.

This resort is great for honeymooners and couples. It could also be a great place for a family vacation since they offer various water sports and activities (at a pretty steep price, relatively saying). However, if you are looking for a resort to go with your friends, I do not suggest Alegre resort. Just go to one of the hotels closer to Mactan.

It's a great alternative to the Mactan resorts if you're up for a 3-hour drive North of Cebu. Rooms are excellent and while getting to the reception area will have expectations lowered, the room layout will wow. Beach front, overlooking view, appealing design and great service are the top items appreciated here.

Great place, sadly stayed there many times. This is the last. The food and service has abused me enough. When they built this place they did a really good job, very nice rooms and setting. But after that, they forgot to make the food and service to match. If you like over priced average food and always going to look for service, you will really like this place. Second visit in a row they dont have san mig light, the food n beverage manager told me san mig had no stock. she did find some within the hour though.

What really stands out about this resort is that it's not over developed! Just a relative handful of huts spread out over a large area means that it never feels busy. It was full when we were there, but the impression was that it was half empty!

If you're looking for a tranquil resort with friendly staff, beautiful coral beaches, excellent diving and excursions, then this is the place for you.

The downsides? Well they do have you as a captive audience, so the meals are expensive by local standards (but not unreasonable compared with a major city in the west). It's also spread out over a cliff side, so it can be a bit of a trek to the restaurant or beach depending on which hut you're staying in. It's also a bit of a drive from the airport. Our little 20 month old daughter serenaded us for two hours with verse after verse of Happy Birthday on the way back!

Would we go again - yes! Highly recommended.
