Had a good stay with a number of friends at this hotel as a base for a night out in Nanjing. Clean, comfortable, and very well located. Excellent service at check in, especially for a large group. The property is slightly dated, at least in the part we stayed, compared to other hotels in the area, but the price and level of accommodation was spot on. Would stay again.

Convenient location, friendly and helpful staff (front desk, concierge); though we didn’t get room book cos we checked in very late (4am). The staff quickly got all everything done asap as such we can rest after a 12 hr flight delayed/cancellation.
Room is spacious and well maintained.

Great location - right by the Nanjing Metro and almost the center point of the city. The room was great, bed very comfy and room very clean. The shower is in the bath, but worked ok. The walking around the hotel at night was fun and very interesting - real buzz in down town Nanjing

Excellent hotel, Just got back from a trip for four nights at the Jinling. I must say, this is one of my favourite hotels. I stayed in an executive room on the top floor (for rooms), the 35th. The view was nothing to look at really, but I keep the curtains closed anyway.

Spacious, elegant, modern and comfortable rooms. The rooms were immaculate and well appointed. There was also a plasma TV and a DVD player and the bathroom had a glass wall (there is a curtain which can only be closed from the bathroom, by the way!) and a volume button connected to the TV so you could watch the TV while in there! On the ceiling above the bathtub, there is a shower head there as well, but it sprays cold water. If you turn the nozzle the wrong way round... It's freezing! The partitions in place of the curtains are a huge improvement. They can block out quite a lot of noise, especially when everyone is lighting fireworks near the hotel.

At the business centre, there were magazines like time and fortune, plus the South China Morning post (But 2 days out of date, it's printed in Hong Kong. You can also borrow DVDs from the business centre to watch.

The pool is quite nice, but not great if you are in for swimming laps. The gymnasium is newly renovated and is great for a workout.

The hotel offers a lot of choices of dining, and the quality of the food and service has remained consistently high. It's a good thing they have the Business centre open to executive floor guests, Jin's cafe was so packed that the guests had to line up past the public bathrooms!

The service from the staff is excellent. When you ask them to send something up, they get it done in two minutes. The staff are also courteous and try their best to make your stay enjoyable. The staff are also multilingual, and the cleaning staff even speak English, which is a pleasant surprise.

The pricing is very reasonable, at $788RMB, when cmpared to places like New York and Hong Kong.

Overall, an excellent hotel, one of my favourites. Glad to see the standards have not dropped at all.
Will definitely be returning when I visit Nanjing, even though it was a four-night stay, it didn't seem long enough!

However, if there is one thing I question, it is the hotel class rating TripAdvisor has given. Without a doubt, the Jinling is 5-star.

Summary:
Probably the most exclusive hotel I have ever stayed in – anywhere in the world!

When and why we stayed:
Stayed for one night in November 2006 during a Highlights of China tour.

Cost:
The hotel rate was included in the overall cost of our holiday.

Room:
Our room (1201) was superb – contemporary styled with glass and wood. The room had a huge king-sized bed; glass business table with ISDN socket and lamp; a mini bar; tea & coffee making facilities. The TV’s channels included ESPN; CNN & BBC World. Slippers and bath robes were provided. The bathroom was spacious and spotless with shower gel; shampoo; tooth brushes etc provided free-of-charge. Two bottles of complimentary water were left for us each day. Room service offered Chateau Lafitte Rothschild at 6900 yuans per bottle.

The Hotel:
The hotel deserves its five-stars rating. Service was excellent. It is full of facilities: a gym; swimming pool; bars; restaurants; and expensive designer stores (Burberry; Polo Ralph Lauren etc). A shopping mall is connected to the hotel. There is a surreal “German” brauhaus in the hotel’s basement, where you can enjoy the Happy Hour and listen to a Filipino cover band sing Olivia Newton John and Summer of 69. The bar is reached by an interesting journey past the adjoining “karaoke” lounge (nothing to do with the hotel!) complete with ladies wearing white gowns. The breakfast buffet in Jin’s Café was an excellent mix of east meet west: fruit; dim sum; cereals; noodles; bacon; rice; and cooked-to-order omelettes.

Location:
Central Nanjing – in the main business / shopping area. A Metro station is under the hotel.

The city:
Nanjing is a modern busy city. It has lots of trees and the Yangtze River. The huge bridge over the river, built in the 1960’s, is worth a visit – don’t miss the gigantic Chairman Mao statue beneath the bridge. The Mausoleum of Dr Sun Yat-sen (referred to as "father of modern China") was impressive. Make the 392 steps climb for great views of the city and to view Sun’s tomb.

The first impression about the hotel cannot be better. Good location, nice doormen and beautiful lobby.
After that the things started to go worse. We said hello and asked to one of the girls in reception if she can help us to do the check in and the answer was an extremely cold "wait". Then when we were informed that our room was in the old building we tried to ask if change was possible to the new one (in elong website we thought our booking was for the new one, as the info was not clear at all). They finally decided to show us the room in the old building so we could check.
The room seemed ok (really different to the picture online, but acceptable). After a few minutes there, we realized there was a really strong smell coming from the aircon. The smell was not just not pleasant but also affected our throats. We asked downstairs if they could do something with the smell and the Manager said us they will send someone to put some purifier or perfum there, but nobody ever appeared,
They have a really nice swimming pool, sauna included. In reception we asked if we needed to bring something (towel, etc...). The answer was no, you can bring swimming hat but that's not a requirement. But the first woman from the spa staff we encountered seemed to have a bad day. She said us the rule is strict so we have to use hat (that they sell there from 30 rmb each. Too low taste from a 5 stars hotel not to give you the hat for free. We had to return back to our room in the 32nd floor to take the wallet). The hotel reception staff don't even know the rules that are applied in their own hotel.

One of the cleaning staff in the Spa asked my wife if one of the towels there have been used by her. My wife was not sure but she said yes, and then the woman said to my wife to put it in the recycling towels bin (I don't pretend to be arrogant but as far as I know that's her job. You can say the same with education and it won't be a problem).
The room is old. Classic? No, old. Antique? No, old, extremely old, and in bad conditions. We put one drink in the table close to the bed and 1 minute later the drink fall down in the floor because the table was a little bit broken and not stable, lack of balance.
The toilet was broken. Every time we flush it the noise could wake up the people in the next room.
The cleaning was deficient. Despite of a big black area on the carpet the worst was the spiders we found on the bathroom, absolutely disgusting.
I forgot to mention that after the shower, when I wanted to use the hairdryer, it was broken. We called reception and asked for a new one. Their first question was asking if we broke it when we use it. Then they just came and try it instead of bringing a new one. We wait for them long time till we decided to leave for breakfast as my hair was already dried of waiting.

Really good breakfast quite complete (despite of the problem of the first day saying we just have 1 breakfast included instead of for both of us) but too many people at the same time. They also bring us one box of moon cakes as a present (as it was Mid-Autumm festival).

But not even that nice detail can balance the terrible experience. It's absolutely the worst 5 stars hotel of my life. If it wasn't for the lobby, swimming area and breakfast this hotel don't deserve even 3 stars.

I won't recommend this hotel to anyone. If the new building is better I ignore it. Maybe you can take the risk and try there but I won't commit the same mistake again.

I usually only post reviews of either very good or very bad hotels.
Of all the 5 star hotels I stayed during 2013 (In China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Australia), this is the worse.

An average 4 star hotel would have been much better than this so call "5 star" hotel.
I would rate this hotel something like a 3.5 star hotel.

I paid for 7 nights for an executive level room

The Good:
Location: Extremely good with a minute walk to intersection of 2 train lines, many shopping malls and tons of great restaurants within these malls
Front door: Bellboys are proactive
Lobby: 5 star appearance

The bad:
- Reception: Staff cannot handle situations (refer below when hotel did not fulfil agreement made prior to the trip)
- Breakfast: Poor quality and cappuccino is chargeable even though I paid for the breakfast
- Lounge: Small and poor quality
- Room Temperature: Very warm room during the winter even though temperature was set to the minimum 15 degrees but I only manage to bring the room down to something like 28 degrees
- Sound-Proofing: Very poor (you can hear people walking along the corridor and if your neighbour open the door, you would have thought that it was your door that was being opened and make you feel like getting up to check every time.
- Bathroom: Small bathroom

I didn't have a single good night sleep during the 7 nights due to the warm temperature and poor sound-proofing.

If you really want to stay in this hotel due to the excellent location, don't bother the upgrade to executive because it is not worth the poor lounge and poor breakfast (I didn't bother to go to the lounge or breakfast after the bad experiences)

Also to mentioned, hotel did not fulfil promise agreed with Agoda prior to the trip and reception mentioned that they do not have records of the agreement even though I have the e-mail proof shown to them with the date and time of the agreement with Agoda. They did not want to recognise the e-mail and resisted in checking with Agoda (I told them they could call Agoda to check, but they say they cannot call which I really don't know why). At the end, it took an hour for a few staff at the reception to resolve with them doing me a "favour" which was actually a promise broken by them initially.

I will not go back to this hotel after these experiences.

I had a room on the 34th floor of the Jinling Hotel for 4 nights. The room was fantastic! Large, clean, modern, plasma TV on wall and a cool two way shower. Service was top notch. I had trouble getting internet connection one morning (7:30 am) so I called for help from their IT guy. Within 2-3 minutes the guy is at my door and a few minutes later I'm connected. On my last day, I realized I needed my shoes shined before leaving. So I called housekeeping at 8am for shoe shine service. 2 minutes later the guy knocks on my door and takes my shoes. 5 minutes later he returns with my shoes buffed and ready to go! The Japanese restaurant inside the hotel is top notch as well (it is managed by Japanese couple). Only thing I didn't like was the outdated gym/fitness room. Otherwise, I will definitely stay here again on my next trip.

What is included or not depends on your negotiation capability only. My usual travel agency got a price, then I asked to our representative office in Nanjing to make the reservation : lower fee (amount - 25%), very good breakfast (at the 56th floor) and 120CNY of laundry included everyday... Ask to some Chinese colleague or friend to call the hotel.
