Let me share a story about our last day in Mariner's Club : Our check out time is 12noon and our flight is 9:30PM so obviously to spend our last hours in Hongkong we need to leave our luggage in Mariner's Club, Mr. henry the security officer was the one assigned to keep our luggage, he let us signed a paper regarding our luggages safety 👍👍 at 4:30 we returned to get our luggage and suddenly mr. Henry said that one of their staffs saw a wallet and a cellphone in our room and return it to us immediately. We are so thankful because we really forgot about our cellphone and wallet due to lack of sleep because we are roaming around hongkong until 2am. Thank you mariners club.
The location is everything, between Nathan Road and Chatham Road to explore, and across the road from the TST(E) MRT station to venture out & explore.
The wifi was available in the room, tho' a little slow on occasion, depending on the usage.
The rooms on the fifth floor were recently refurbished, the room and the beds were very comfortable. The upper floors are still to upgrade.
The bar was very reasonably priced, especially compared with the other hotels and bars in the Kowloon neighbourhood, like kind of half-price.
The buffet in the restaurant was a bargain, whether of lunch or dinner, you could never do both - tho' some greedy ones have tried.
The building, the bar, the restaurant were built in the 60's and the restaurant has the retro-look of the 20's at that - all adds to the certain style of a bygone era - the restaurant service and buffet are from a time of my youth too.
If anybody should be disrespectful about this place, then they should get to church - which is located on the first floor immediately below the second floor restaurant. You should check it out.
All seafarers, at sea or retired, would do well to come here, to support The Mission to Seamen, who run the place effectively and efficiently. A joy - thank you !!
The staff are friendly, especially when they get to know you. Do not be put off by the traditional Cantonese "service with a snarl" - it is just the old fashioned Hong Kong way. The refurbished rooms on the fourth and fifth floors are excellent and the other rooms are best described as Late British Colonial Hard Wearing, a description that also goes for the restaurant and bars. Breakfast is basic but OK. A very suitable place for families, with its own outdoor swimming pool.
The location is absolutely brilliant, next door to an MTR station and also served by the Airport Express Shuttle Bus to/from Kowloon Station.
The best value for money in Hong Kong; clean and, by definition, being Church run, decent!
However, the comfortness of the beds, the room and the shower was amazing. The aircon in the room was perfect. The shower room has a bath tub. There is a swimming pool as well. All rooms are non-smoking.
Night-life is packed around the area. Street food, shopping malls and etc are available around the area as well.
I would love to spend more days the next time i visit this area in Kowloon.
We were on the 10th floor with spectacular harbour views.
There was one other room on our floor, but I think they left that vacant :)
Next to our rooms, there was a common area with a large balcony and a lounge and table and chairs and tv (we didnt watch).
The rooms or the hotel are not flash but it is not a hotel...it is a mariners club and we are very fortunate and appreciative to be able to stay there.
Huge room (pushed twin beds together for us). Huge bathroom with toileteries and a hair drier provided.
Beds were hard, as all asian beds seem to be, but we found them very good and the pillows are the best wev'e ever slept on when travelling.
Telephone, tea and coffee , air conditioning, wifi and alot of wardrobe and drawer space and hangers.
There was nothing that we needed and all this for $100 per room a night, which I believe is cheap for Hong Kong.
Rooms cleaned very well every day.
Breakfast was included and we enjoyed. You could have anything from a small buffet and included was, western porridge, asian porridge, scrambelled eggs, hard boiled eggs, hot ham, sausages, grilled tomatoes, baked beans, noodles, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereals, bread/toast and jams. Tea, coffee and juice.
I don't know why you would not enjoy that, it's certainly more than we would ever eat at home each day.
We did not eat in the restaurant but our oldest daughter did and said the food was very nice but a little expensive.
The hotel had a bowling alley and a couple of bars.
The staff at the front desk and security desk were really really lovely and very helpul.
The staff at breakfast were really lovely too.
However the staff at the swimming pool were very grumpy. You have to take your own towel or room towel or pay to hire and it wasn't cheap....we used our hand towels and sarongs lol.
There is a lift inside the hotel...but there are many stairs from the road getting up to inside of the hotel.....not very good at the end of the day when you were exhausted, but as long as you don;t have mobility problems, you just manage them.
There was a sign in the rooms saying strictly no food allowed. This was a pest if you wanted to bring a takeaway dinner up to eat it. I don't really understand why this rule exists.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will gladly book again when we next visit Hong Kong.
Make sure you check out whether you qualify to stay. Email with the hotel was excellent. Always a return email to our questions and reservation.
Rooms are simple, but have everything you need. No TV, but there is a TV room close by if you are not exhausted and just got to watch TV. WiFi in the rooms for any computer and phone needs.
Bed looked soft and squishy, but that was the comforter. The bed is actually quite hard, but I've been too exhausted from sight seeing for it to stop me from sleeping.
Staff has been wonderful. When we have a need or ask a question they are right there to help.
Convenient laundry service sent out by front desk. A little more expensive than if I took it out, but the convenience of not having to lug my laundry out is well worth it.
Right now they offer a free breakfast buffet, which we've had every morning.
There is a pool that looks quite nice, but it's winter right now and it is closed.
We are drinking bottled water just in case and there are stores very close to fill that need.
The location is absolutely great, with Nathan Road and Star Ferry very close by. On top you have a subway station just around the corner - so a very good starting point for exploring Hongkong.
The stuff at the reception was very friendly and helpfull.
Now the negative:
We had a "suite" there, which was supposed to be the best they had there. It was quite large, especially for Hongkong standards, but extremely dirty. There was plenty of dust everywhere, the bathroom and shower absolutely disgusting, topped by water dripping down from the ceiling whenever someone seemed to shower on the floor above. Maybe someone should advise them to clean their rooms at least once a month. I am traveling a lot (even to third world countries), but this was probably the dirtiest place I have ever stayed.
The last renovation of this place was probably at least 20 years ago, and from the furnitures you can tell that they likely haven't been investing a single cent into it ever since.
The breakfast buffet wasn't good, but fills your stomach if you don't expect too much.
The chinese staff in the restaurant was extremely unfriendly (except one older lady), toppedby an older man who kept constantly complaining whenever he needed to do something.
Since we are talking about Hongkong, where prices for hotels can quickly get sky high, this may still be a more or less acceptable place for low budget travelers because of its great location. People who expect a minimum standard and a clean place probably need to look elsewhere nowadays.
This place has definetely seen much better days long time ago, and I likely wouldn't stay there again.
All in all a paradise for the merchant seamen to stay in Hongkong.
The 1960's building, still under threat of closure due to avaricious developers, continues to provide superb value accommodation in Central Kowloon.
So if you're an ex or serving mariner, this is the place to be!
Our fifth visit in 2 years was up to standard. In addition to the facilities it's the staff that make this place. Pebbles, Henry all deserve mention.
We hope that it remains open long enough to accommodate us during any future visit!
