From MTR to the hotel is a far walk. No proper front door.
I appreciate the front desk upgrade my room, the room is a nice and very good view. But breakfast is terrible, not many choices and not fresh.

Good luck !!

I spent three nights there in january 2005. The location is the best asset. Only a 5 minutes walk to the convention centre, which is a place to visit whether you are there for business or pleasure, to get a view of both Kowloon and the Central area. The hotel is close to the Wanchai MTR station and the Wanchai Star Ferry pier. Lockhart road, made famous in Richard Mason's The World of Suzy Wong, is a 5 minutes walk away. Here and in the neighbouring streets you can find a blend of discos, pubs, restaurants and girlie bars.

The rooms are rather small but clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. No fancy furnitures, but a reasonable price (hey, it's Hong Kong, nothing is cheap here). I stayed in a room facing the harbour but unfortunately at the end of the building. Only a small sector of the harbour could be seen due to the end wall. I guess the other rooms will have a better view, but this is not a hotel where you spend a lot of time anyway. Are you looking for a central place to stay in the lower price range I can recommend this place.

This hotel is called the Harbour View International House, but it's the old YMCA on the HK Island side. There is a big "YMCA" stylized graphic on the side of the hotel. The rooms are very small and the beds (in my room) were just single size and very tiny. The bathroom was just too small for words. Again, it's fine for budget business travel, but forget about luxury. The rooms were basically clean, just old. For the price I would say it was a good value for people who just want a clean, decent room to sleep in and not much else in the way of amenities.

The staff were all very nice. The hotel has a great view if you happen to be facing HK harbor, and the breakfast buffet in the morning is actually not bad at all.

Recommended for cost-conscious business travelers or budget-minded tourists. The location is just across the street from the HK Convention & Exhibition Center, and the Wanchai MTR entrance is just a couple of blocks away.

Stayed here for business for four nights in September. Booked it given the reasonable reviews and close proximity to the Convention Centre (5 minute walk). Also is was half the price of five star hotels in this super expensive city.
On check in was given a non-harbour facing room and two single beds. Not Was was after. After a quick chat to the receptionist she upgraded me to a Harbour view room with a double bed.
Pros: Great air con. Comfy bed. Water pressure strong. Nespresso coffee machine. Good choice at breakfast. Close to Convention centre. Close to city centre.
Cons: Small room and bathroom. Gym small only two treadmills.
All up I would stay here again.

There is not much fancy about the hotel. It's old YMCA at Hongkong. The room is quite small and bathroom even smaller. It's in Wan Chai on Hongkong island and is really close to convention center and some Wan Chai government buildings. There is also a Hyatt(?) across the street. It's really nice to walk to bay front and look at all the lights in the night. It's about 10 minute walk to Star Ferry's Wan Chai terminal. Following the elevated walkway past Wan Chai government, it's about 5 minute walk to Wan Chai subway station.

Hotel staff is quite friendly. There is no 110V power outlet in the room. They offered to charge my 110V GSM cell phone for me.

In general, this is a ok place to stay if you want to be in the heart of Hongkong island and don't want to spend a lot.

We (my girlfriend and I) stayed one week and were happy of the choice. Sure one choice to be repeated had we to go back to HK.

Concise summary:

globally a great trade-off quality/price and very good location

pros:
- premium room with Harbour view: great, recently refurbished, 20" LCD TV, new bathroom, kept very clean by the housekeeping, good soundproofing from outside the main room, nice view
- central
- good service (e.g. very quick to rectify the error in the assigned room (twin instead than the requested double))

cons:
- radio with 3 (!) channels in chinese
- tv with few english speaking channels (but we were not there to watch tv anyway)
- airconditioninig a bit too loud
- bed a bit too hard

cannot comment: restaurant or breakfast as not used.

I stayed at this hotel because the YMCA has a reputation for running good hotels, and also because of its location: it's overlooking the harbour and is only about 5 minutes walk from one of the Star Ferry terminals (the one at Wan Chai, where you can catch the ferry across to Kowloon side) and about the same distance from a lively area with nightclubs, girlie bars, convenience stores, and great places to grab a quick Asian take-away, or catch the MTR (subway). It's quite a good location from which to travel around Hong Kong because of its proximity to the ferry, MTR and major bus routes, and this is the main advantage of this hotel. That said, it's not in the centre of things: if you want that it's probably better to head for the Kowloon side (Nathan Road area: Tsim Sha Tsui to Mong Kok) or Central if you want to stay on the Hong Kong Island side.

I paid for a 'view room' overlooking the harbour and felt ripped off. I certainly wouldn't pay for this view again -- the view was angled so I was really looking at a neighbouring building covered in bamboo scaffolding unless I made an effort to go right up to the window and look the other way. Even then, it was a partial view and not of a particularly beautiful part of the harbour. Next time I'd save my money and just take a walk along the harbour foreshore at Tsim Sha Tsui instead: the view of the harbour is much nicer from the Kowloon side anyway.

For visiting business people or those attending the convention centre (diagonally across the road), the location is likely to be better than for tourists. For tourists, there are more convenient locations but this is OK.

The hotel was clean and the staff were professional, though the standard of their English was sometimes surprisingly poor considering how many HK people speak great English.

When I stayed the floors directly above and below were being renovated, so hammering began in the relatively early morning and didn't stop till evening. It even continued on the weekend. This may be necessary to renovate the hotel, but isn't really acceptable from a guest's point-of-view: I think they should have charged less in light of this, or at least have given advanced warning at the time I booked. I asked about changing rooms but was told there were none available.

The room I stayed in was renovated. It was small but comfortable. Given the choice between an unrenovated and renovated room, I would pay the extra for one of the newer rooms (but check first that you won't have people hammering away when you're trying to sleep -- very annoying).

CONCLUSION:
HK is an expensive place to stay but I felt this hotel is somewhat overpriced for what you get in comparison to other HK establishments. If you don't mind this, it's a reasonable location and a clean, safe place from which to base your explorations of HK. It wouldn't be my first choice of place to stay next time I'm in HK, but it's not a bad place.

WE stayed at HARBOURVIEW HOTEL between JUL 29 - AUG 4, 2009 at room1916.

WE booked a double room (breakfast included) online but could not acquire a late check-out .
When we arrived check-in was fast and the late check-out was immediately taken care of.

THE first impression of the hotel is that it is not a fancy, luxurious place especially when compared to near by HYATT AND RENNAISSANCE hotels.
nevertheless, this is a very mistaken impression.

THE HOTEL ROCKS!!!
The staff are all polite, efficinet and ready to answer evry question.

Wstayed in the 19th floor, so the view was amazing. We were overlooking KOwloon Bay. (see attache photos)

The room itself was not big but was quite spacious for two people.
The housekeeping was exceptional and the room was very clean (although we requested a smoking room).
Only one drawback concerning the room: There was no comlimentary coffee although there was a boiler.

The breakfast was very good and could find both european and chinese things to choose. Without being sth special, it was tasteful, clean and the people working there were very kind.

The location of the hotel is just perfect:
1. the convention centre is just across the street.
2. it is only 5mins walking from one of the central MTR sations, Wan Chai.
3. the star ferries are max 10 mins walking away.

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants neraby if you want to grab sth to eat or drink.
Among them, Cafe De Coral. You can find this chain all over the city, but somehow the one next to the hotel seemed to be the best.

In all, this is ahotel that bears an excellent price-to-value ratio and would definately recommend it to our friends and family.

3 last comments:

1. There is no free WI-FI INTERNET ACCESS. It costs 40HKD/hour
2. We filled in a questionnaire about the hotel when checking-out and mentioned the above. By the time we were back home, the hotel manager had sent us an e-mail thanking us for our comments. His kindness and time spent are very much appreciated and make a difference.

3. There is ashutt;e bus leaving every hour for the airport. It costs THERE 130HKDS, which a very good price

It was our first visit to Hong Kong and we chose Harbour View International based on predominantly positive reviews on tripadvisor.com. Using Rates to Go, we made a reasonably priced reservation --3 nights stay in a standard room with daily breakfast for 2.

Check in: We arrived at around 9 pm. We took the A 12 bus from the airport but overshot our stop, ending in Causeway Bay. Apparently, we were supposed to stand by the exit and be quick pressing the stop button since the stops were close together. We took a taxi back to Wan Chai which cost us an extraHKD33 + HKD10 for 2 pieces of luggage. As per the advice of other trip advisor members, we asked for but did not get a room upgrade with a harbour view. Instead, we got a renovated room with a distinct odor of paint--not too strong though.

Room: The room was smaller than what we're used to but it was clean, and adequately furnished. The window faced a wall so we just kept our drapes closed. There was a small fridge with drinks (fee)and a daily supply of bottled mineral water (free). There was a good sized safe which was very useful to keep our passports and cash secure. We loved the strong water pressure of the shower--a godsend after hours of walking. My husband looked for but did not find an ice dispenser in the hotel. House keeping instead brought us up a pitcher of iced water.

Location: If you were in Hong Kong attending a seminar in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, this hotel is a perfect alternative to the pricey Renaissance Harbour Hotel and Grand Hyatt across the street. To hit the tourist sites, you can't do anything on foot if you want to conserve energy, keep cool and maximize your time in Hong Kong. The Wan Chai MTR is a 15 minute walk (unless you are unusually fit--you can do it in 5 minutes). You have to do several flights of stairs and several blocks as well. The bus stop is about 30 meters from the front of the hotel--very convenient except that only the 18,18P, 46X buses stopped there. In Gloucester Road are other bus stops but to get there, you have to do the previously mentioned stairs. I asked the concierge for a map indicating all the buses that enter Wan Chai. I cannot believe that he did not have one! We would have enjoyed our stay more if we had route maps for all the buses. The Wan Chai Ferry to Kowloon is a 20 minute walk from the hotel .

We ended up spending about $150 HKD per person just for fares (MTR, buses, ferries) to and from the tourist sites and shopping areas. Next time we are in Hong Kong, we will get another hotel that is closer to any MTR station. In that way, we could get the 3 day tourist pass that allows you unlimited MTR rides for 3 days and either a one way or round trip airport express ride.

Our rooms can accommodate one extra bed for a maximum of three persons. We recommend you to book two Premier Rooms each equipped with two single beds. Dear Wen-Ling L, Thank you for your enquiry. We are pleased that you are interested in staying at The Harbourview. Hong Kong is a safe place, however, like other cosmopolitan cities, walking alone at night particularly in the back alleys or quiet areas is relatively unsafe. Wan Chai is a bustling district clustering with numerous local eateries and bistros, and bars and restaurants featuring international cuisine. Harbour Restaurant at The Harbourview provides breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets presenting an enticing array of international cuisine. The theme of the dinner buffet will be updated every 2 or 3 months. We hope you will have a wonderful dining experience in Wan Chai district and at Harbour Restaurant. Please come and stay with us. We look forward to welcoming you in the near future. Thank you for your support of The Harbourview.
