Having the opportunity to see all the family members at Christmas under the current sets of restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 virus was not an easy task at all in Hong Kong. However, I managed to celebrate a memorable Christmas Eve with all my family members at Gloucester Luk Kwok (GLK) Hotel. The HKSAR government announced an extension of social distancing measures until January 6, 2021 just before Christmas. In other words, the current rule about public gatherings (i.e. only two people are allowed to gather in public) and ban on dining services after 6pm remained unchanged during Christmas time and this obviously affected our Seasonal Cheer Staycation Package at GLK Hotel. What is more, the cupcake making class (which was included in our package) was cancelled due to the current social distancing measures. Special thanks should go to Mr. Ray Hon (from the Reservation Department) who suggested to offer us five Fresh Cream Cakes (1 pound each) or Black Forest Cakes (1 pound each) for the replacement of the cupcake making class. After taking the health and needs of our family members into consideration, Ray proposed to upgrade our our five superior rooms to premier rooms on the 25th floor instead of offering five cakes to us. We appreciated Ray’s care of us very much. The change in our room type obviously allowed all ten of us to enjoy room service for our 4-hour “Unique Japanese Cuisine” All-You-Can-Eat Christmas Dinner comfortably in five very spacious and specially decorated rooms. Needless to say, the food was really good but most importantly, I would like to extend my gratitude to the two staff members from Le Menu for their wonderful service provided to my family members throughout the evening. Not only did I need to reserve 5 rooms for my family members to enjoy themselves during Christmas, I had to reserve 5 tables for two for my family so that they could have dim sum on Christmas morning. Thanks to the staff at Canton Room for helping us to reserve 5 tables between 10am and 12noon even though the restaurant was fully booked on Christmas Day. The staff were really caring for the fact that their service to us was of the highest quality. The must-eat dishes include assorted dim sum platter, baked mini egg tarts, barbecue pork with liver, beef congee with preserved and salted eggs and fried rice noodles with scallops.…
A very good option if you are attending a conference in Wanchai. The Exhibition Center is less than ten minute walk and the Luk Kwok is right in the middle of Wanchai, with great restaurant and bar options. The gym is very basic though, with only a few cardio options, no weights. Breakfast is usually included and the buffet is really good, everything you want is available, even an omelette station.
The hotel is rather old, even if it is clean and well maintained but it shows its age. Rooms are big for HK standards and are located only on high floors, from 21 to 28 if I am not wrong. The location is convenient both for Wanchai MTR station and for the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre. But the location is also , at night, the meeting point of all the “night girls” of Wanchai. If you exit on the wrong side of the hotel you’ll be approached by many of them. Some may like the idea, but it is not my case. Finally, the most negative note relates to the Wi-Fi, which works with smartphones but not with laptops. If you are there to work, chances are that you want to use your laptop. Did not try the breakfast, Starbucks, Pacific Coffee and Pret à Manger are 20 steps from the front door. A pity for the Wi-Fi, as it will be the main reason why I shall not be back. …
It is a historical hotel, but the building doesn't feel like it has aged. - Perfect location, especially the reason I stayed here is because I need to travel to HKCEC each morning for exhibition and it is just across the plaza in front of the hotel. - Rooms are clean, slightly old, like for one time, the bed sheet had a small hole. But in general it is clean and tidy. - Slight noise because my room was facing the main road with the busy traffic, but not too bad. - The Cantonese restaurant is a big surprise. It was so good we went back several times for personal as well as business dinner. But it is a very busy restaurant it seems, so we had to make reservations early.
Everybody knows, those are not the best days to visit HK... nevertheless, we decided to get there to attend a very important international show just two days later a person demonstrating was killed. For this reason, my Chinese collegue decided not to come and cancell the reservation. Even if I did not ask, the hotel cancelled the reservation of my collegue without penalty, and I really appreciate this, since it is not the fault of the hotel and I immagine they are suffering so many cancellations during these days. They were always very helpfull amd nice trying to help us and informing how to move around. Rooms are really nice, clean and breakfast full of options. I would highly recommend it!
