Detailed Reviews
My husband and I stayed at Oi Suen Guesthouse for 5 nights (and it was a bit too long). Our room was one of the smallest double rooms I think. Basically, we had a bed between two walls and a tiny bathroom. Barely enough space to stand together at the same time. We also had a small window but it gives onto an air column.
Positive :
It is very well located in Mong Kok, next to the subway station, markets, restaurants, shopping malls... You can easily get to Central from there.
Convenient information provided on the walls and discounted tickets for sell.
We had a warm welcome and the friendly staff speaks well english (not the mother but she is sweet, she understands you and she makes herself understood).
There is free hot and cold water all day: very convenient.
The shower is very good with great pressure.
There are air con and fan in the room, and it is quiet.
Negative
We find it quite expensive for the size of the room, even in Hong Kong.
Because of the humid weather, the room is humid with a smell.
It is really small.
Wifi not so good sometimes.
We think the best is to stay one or two nights maximum and then, you just visit the other floors of the building to find other guesthouses.

First of all, I would like to point out that this place is actually not bad. Let's start with the good points first.
1. The guesthouse contacts you to reconfirm your booking and answers Emails quite fast.
2. The managers help walk you through the whole process of checking-in with a smile.
3. They do offer discounted tickets for certain tourist attractions, which is great since if you're looking for cheaper tickets, it's within arm's reach.
4. The room is *quite* clean and has every basic thing you need, except for towels and shampoo. But you get what you pay for, so no complaints here.
5. Free water (good clean water), hot and cold available.
6. The staff are very helpful. Even if some do not understand English, they would try to connect and understand what you're saying and answer you in the best possible way they can.
7. Free WiFi. Enough said. :) It's fast as well.
8. 24 hr Elevator on one side, which is good since we're always out at night.
9. Very good location! It's just across the Ladies Market, very near Nathan Road, very near MTR Stations. Money changer is just downstairs. a 24hr McDonalds nearby :) In short, I really like the location!
10. No hawkers below trying to get you to buy something. I felt pretty safe.
11. The room's facilities are basically there. There's a cool working aircon, a ceiling fan and a small TV. They even replaces the remote when they noticed it wasn't as presentable without us asking. :)
12. They clean the room a bit when they see the please clean up sign hanged outside.
Okay, now in every good side, there is a bad side. I'm not saying this isn't a good place to stay, but personally, I don't think I'd stay here for more than 3 nights. Maybe it's just me, but these are some points to think about.
1. The room is quite small, as most rooms are of HK guesthouses. There's not much room to place luggages there, especially if you have a lot, unless it's under their high beds.
2. The bed is small too, especially if you're a tall person. Luckily, I'm not, but a bit cramped for a person past 5'7 I guess.
3. The beds are hard. My back hurt after sleeping there for two nights. But like I said, you do get what you pay for.
4. The comfort room is cramped, as in seriously cramped. The shower is over the toilet and you could barely move in it. If you're claustrophobic, this place wouldn't be too great for you.
5. The rooms are fairly clean, but I sneezed a lot. Might just be me and my asthma, but it isn't super clean.
6. No windows. Feels like a cell, but if you don't mind a room without a view, it won't be an issue.
7. Some of the things inside the room are already rusty.
8. The toilet spews out water every time you flush it. I don't know if this is the same for the other rooms, but mine did. If you're not finky, again, this may not be an issue.
9. They ask for a 100HKD key deposit and won't return the money to you if you check out late (past 11PM). I can understand a deposit if you break something, but not really for a late check out.
10. I paid 500 HKD a night, a bit pricey for the place, I think. Still, it costs less than a hotel with more stars, I guess.
Anyway, overall I think the good outweighs the downside. It is a good place to stay, as I've said, because it has a good location. Overall the staff were great and friendly and accommodating. The place is "you get what you pay for" type. For backpapckers and those who enjoy a good adventure with a rather low price, I think this is a good place.

First of all I would like to say if you're looking for a budget price for a group of 2-4 which is located in the city where in everything is accessible this is one of the best hostels that I can recommend. It's near to the ladies market, money exchanger, expensive and not so expensive restaurants, Street food, MTR, Mongkok Station being it's closest MTR station which is close to the stations of some Tourist spots, Techy Stores, Buses and Convenient Stores such as 7/11s. Just an advice, don't expect too much with the room size, luggages should not be that big because the rooms are not that spacious it just fits exactly a few luggage (Which can be put under the bed), they have clean sheets and clean small bathroom (with hot water) and the hostel has wifi! You can request for your room to be cleaned all the time, the helpers are very kind and cheerful, mostly the Hostel's Manager Ms. Rainbow, She's very kind and fun to be with. She will help you with all your problems anything to do with tours, entrance tickets, Macau ferry tickets and other tourist spots that you prefer to go to, directions and when your lost you can use the MTR's free wifi to contact her on the WeChat App or other Social App to ask for directions plus she speaks English that makes everything easy. :) I would recommend this Hostel to people who are in a budget trip but would like to spend everything with having an adventure around the City.
P.S she sells cheaper entrance tickets, ferry tickets, soda, coffee and other things at the reception of the hostel! And there are a lot of MAPS and MTR Directions posted at the wall and even pictures at a folder booklet.

This place is so terrible as it has big water leakage problem. The water problem not only affect all units but also units downstairs and lead to a lot of complaints and disturbances. Could you imagine to stay in a hostel without water, with flooding as well as complaints from neighborhoods all days?

I chosed this guesthouse based on T.A's review, about 2 weeks before my trip I booked through agoda.com when I arrived to mongkok first of all I struggled to look for sincere house, this place is crowded and busy.
Took the lift to 8th floor and found the guest house, this place looked like a run down flats with residents staying. Upon arriving I met Ms. Ellen, she was very nice that I have to admit. Since payment already done via agoda, we just paid 100HKD for deposit.
Then after we were brought down back to G floor & back to 13th floor it wasnt oi suen guest house anymore it was "sunshine guesthouse" I was suprised, entering my room I was shocked to see the room size!
I know hong kong is out of space but this is ridiculously small, bed was hard, no space to move around very very basic place!
I suppose to stay here for 2 night but I changed my mind to move out after the first day itself as I was too uncomfortable to sleep here. Ms . Ellen offered us a better room for 480HKD but I still think its not worth my stay so I moved out!
To those on very very tight budget and willing to cramp yourself into a small room with basically no amenities this should be fine for you. Like myself I regret choosing as im not used to living in such a low budget place, I paid more to a better hotel so my stay is pleasant & most importantly I feel safe!
Ms.Ellen was nice to me, I appreciate her kindness but sorry this property is not for me. More over was given a substandard room not in oi suen but was in sunshine guesthouse. Something to think about!

Responded 17 Mar 2016
Hi, Sorry for your negative experience. Just to inform you and all of our guests, anywhere we personally take you to will be a hostel that we operate ourselves. In fact, the whole of Sincere House is one big family. We like to help each other when in need. We at Oisuen Guesthouse, make it our priority to serve the needs of our guests. Our guests needs come before anything. If there be such an incident where we cannot give you the exact room that you booked, we will give you the equivalent room and/or better. Please note to all, we are Guesthouses. All of us at the Sincere House property are in fact Guesthouses and are not hotels. Please keep this in mind when making your booking at any establishment. Good day xx

This was my first time to Hong Kong so it was a lesson. I will split this review into 3 parts: clarifications, positives, and negatives:
Clarifications:
1. This guest house in a large 16 story building the contains other guest houses, hotel, and businesses. Space is scarce in Hong Kong so this arrangement is common.
2. Finding the place: the entrance is very hard to find. Easiest way to find the entrance is to look for a 7-11 next the Spanish Hourly Hotel. Entrance to guest house is right across the 7-11.
3. Size: the rooms are tiny. But hong kong is crowded. Everything is squeezed in. You will not be given a big room.
4. Bare bones: this is bare bones. Its clean and not a hotel. If you want luxury, spend $90 more for a real hotel.
Positives:
1. Easy access to airport. Simply get on A21 bus at airport, get off at stop #6 and you will be a block way.
2.Polite staff: really class lady was running it.
3. Clean: no dirt and no disgusting bed critters that bite
Negatives:
1. Tiny rooms but this is hong kong.
2. Hard to find: make sure to print out a map or bring a phone GPS.
3. Kind of noisy: the building is one with many other guest houses/flats.
I would stay here again. Hong Kong is expensive and crowded. But this place was cool.

First let me give the good points. The rooms, being tiled from floor to ceiling, are clean as is the bedding albeit slightly grey and the staff are friendly. That is about it. The establishment resembles no other guesthouse I have ever seen and indeed the names "crash pad" or "flophouse" spring to mind although a new name should be coined for this type of accommodation. It is but one of a number of similar establishments in a 14 storey building. Maybe "squeesotel" or "cramatorium" would be appropriate. The rooms are so small (about 2x3 metres) that they should more honestly be called "cells". The only storage space is under the elevated beds (which are so short that if you are taller than 5ft 8 you will have to sleep in the foetal position) and the "bathroom" consists of a toilet, washbasin and shower. The shower is positioned directly over the toilet so you can have a bowel movement and shower at the same time although you would have to sit sideways on the toilet to do so. Sitting normally you would not be able to close the sliding shower door unless you had legs the thickness of vermicelli. When arising from the toilet I found it was not attached to the floor and flushing it caused the contents to be pouring all over the floor. Not a pleasant experience. Unlike an hotel you are not provided with towels and have to purchase these at HK$20 apiece and this for a scrap of material the size of two washcloths. Drinking water also has to be purchased. The corridors are frequently lined with other guest's luggage which makes navigation difficult. In our room the air conditioning did not work and neither did the fan so we had to sleep with the window open (most rooms do not have the luxury of a window) and this allowed the noise and smells from the street to penetrate, making sleep difficult. The racket went on until 3AM. When we left we found to our horror that the lifts were not working and had to lug our bags down a flight of stairs to the 7th floor where by a miracle the lifts were operative. Had they not been we would have missed our flight. Would I stay here again? NO and not merely because I never intend returning to Hong Kong, the most unfriendly, congested, polluted, expensive, soulless and dreary city I have ever visited but because I would rather pay a bit more for a real hotel where, if I had a cat, I would have room to swing it. I felt less claustrophobic in the Kutchi tunnels of Vietnam and paid less for a room in 3 and 4 star hotels in Bangkok, Halong Bay, Hue and Hanoi. I felt sorry for Ellen, the friendly and helpful young lady who seemed to be in charge and did not have the heart to tell her what I thought of her cramatorium.

Response from oisuen, Owner at Oi Suen Guesthouse
Responded 20 Feb 2014
Hi esratrams, Thanks for coming to experience Hong Kong and stay at Oisuen Guesthouse. Being Hong Kong residents,100% agree the space in HK is unreasonable expensive with extremely limited space. Located at perfect location with perfect transportation network and convenience for shopping and eating, and would like to pay for very budget rate for accommodation, then please don't complaint about the size again and again. Here we would strongly advise the guests don't expect Hong Kong can provided a huge space for staying like your home town because hostel room in HK just like the size of your bathroom. Please don't compare the size with Vietnam, Bangkok, Hanoi... ... which is not make sense at all. We suggest: 1. Reserve a star hotel in Hong Kong with over US130-260. 2. Upgrade our room from double to triple or bigger The fact cannot be changed is 90% of HK hostel is " the "bathroom" consists of a toilet, washbasin and shower" or you pay more for HOTEL(like you said), please, please, please. :) Something very untruth is: 1. All our air-cons are 100% works for sure. Why don't you ask us if you don't know how to open? 2. Our drinking water is from eSpring filter and provides 24hours for FREE with hot and cold. Only the new bottle water would be charged. Our guesthouse is famous in some countries because we provide FREE eSpring water. 3. We checked that the lift in December 100% works. We told every guest when check in that we have 2 lifts; one is 7am-11pm and one is 24hours. (we even made a notice stick at the lift). Something very truth is: 1. We are clean, but small 2. We are friendly and helpful 3. Our new fresh towel sells at $20; we wish guests bring the own for saving the world. **Free teeth brush upon request* At Oi Suen Guesthouse, there's not only Ms Ellen is friendly, but also the aunts and those staff who are deaf and mute. Although some don't speak English or even Language, they all are well-trained to show all facilities. Also, the guests are always welcomed to ask any questions from us. We don't mind some guests never respect us when we clearly introduce all service we have; however, please don't complain everyone after you don't listen or even don't ask if you don't know how's the air-conditioning works and where is the drinking water... ... :) We are friendly because we have love and respect and we wish the love would continue forever. Thanks for any guests who spend time to read my honest and true heart reply. Tripadvisor is fair to let the hostel to have a feedback, but not only keep hurt by the untruth comments. Thanks again and again. Best Regards, Ms Ellen aka Rainbow

Before I begin i'd like to mention that i'm a frequent traveller who has stayed in budget accommodation all over the world. I'd like to think I have a understanding of what you should and shouldn't be getting from cheaper hotels/guesthouses.
Firstly the place is very difficult to find despite using their map provided on the website. It is located on the 8th floor above a department store but there are no signs to direct you whatsoever.
Once we managed to find the place and after queuing 20 mins to use the lift (few lifts, many floors and plenty of backpackers moving luggage around) we were informed the rooms we had booked weren't available. Instead of 3 single en-suite rooms we were offered 1 single en suite, 1 single room 5 floors up in a different building and 1 which can only be described as a cupboard. Naturally we were unhappy with this and after about an hour of trying to explain this to a non English speaker we finally got to speak to the manager who offered us a double room and the single en-suite. This was not ideal but after having already wasted so much time of our holiday already we reluctantly accepted.
The rooms themselves are small as can be expected however the double room we were given was ridiculously hot due to the air conditioning being broken. The lady's response was "it's ok, as we can just open the window"!. If you've never been to Hong Kong before I can confirm it's incredibly noisy on the streets at night.
Also worth mentioning that a few times when we returned at night there were some 'shady' looking people standing around the entrance which would have been a lot more unsettling if we were a smaller party.
The good points were it is very handy for the metro/MTR, free wi-fi and there is a lot of tourist information available inside the guesthouse. However my advice would be to look elsewhere and we seriously regretted not spending that little bit more. With a delayed flight, trying to find the place and sorting out the room situation we lost half a day exploring this fascinating country (we only had 3 days there)

Hi Michael, Thanks for reserving our room through online. As you know, you sent you 3 emails to ask for the reconfirm over a month, but we didn't receive any reply from you.We would advise all our guests the best way to come even don't do homework on finding our location. And we still did arrange you the rooms to stay and everything. We 100% arranged you the room at same building and after a night even changed you all rooms at same floor and even free upgraded one to twin bed room. For the first night of air-conditing 100% works, you are not allowed to open the window and air-con at the same time which is absolutely not environmental for our lovely world. The air-con will never be cool if keep opening the window. Last but not least,we would really clearly clarify that people standing downstair around the entrance is just waiting for minibus, eating or waiting people. Here's no one will grasp you to buy things. We very welcome any guests have any questions to ask us instead of thinking too much to make those untruth review. Most staff at the hostel are women, and we even back home after 1-2am on the street which is absolutely safe surround here. This area is bright and so many people for 24/7. Deeply remember the last day all staff is here, but you didn't ask us any question about the transportation back to the airport. When we found you walked to the wrong direction,we even run to you and guide you the right direction and clearly showed you again. There's no one in purpose to make you delay if you have good preparation or received the advise. We are just a small family guesthouse and we never ever expect people would appreciate what we do in our true heart. We would recommend people to pay more and stay at the hotel if they are looking for something perfect. Thanks again. Oi Suen Guesthouse promise: clean, safety, friendly staff and great location. Thanks. :) Best Regards, Ms. Ellen aka Rainbow Oi Suen Guesthouse Manager

It was a memorable and pleasure trip to HK. The guesthouse is very clean, reasonably priced and most of all it is super convenient. The MRT station is just few minutes away, Ladies Street is just few walks away, Temple Street is reachable on foot and most of all most of the famous food and eateries is surrounding Oi Suen Guesthouse. Isn't it a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?
Rainbow, the guest house manager is a very down to earth pretty girl, who provide lots of information about places of interest in HK and food tips and always with a smile on her face. Sam, Uncle Victor, Ah Lin & Cindy is very helpful too.
If you guys are looking for something that has everything you wanted in HK, Oi Suen Guesthouse is the place for you.

After unsuccessfully being able to find a place to sleep that wasn't hourly (gross) or 200 uk pounds a night we got a tea latte in Starbucks and with the last 5% battery that I had on my mobile we located a hostel advertised at 25 pounds a night on booking.com, called the Oi Suen hostel up near Mong Kok station. When we eventually got there by walking up 8 flights of stairs with our bags, tired and irritable the rooms were 35+ pounds a night with no bargaining. We settled for this. Our room was basic and unclean. I don't mind basic but I do certainly mind unclean. For 35 quid a night you’re basically 4/5* in any other Asian location but not here. In this hostel the shower, loo and sink were all squished in a shower cubicle and the door fell off when we got in. There was no floor space, the bags just slid under the bed so that you could shut your room door. The room was in a crappy run down council flat block type looking place, with sex shops and other hostels above and below you. Nice. This is the outside of our “hotel”….

Thanks for staying our hostel. First,we do wish you would understand that Hong Kong is a very small place with so many people living here and the space becomes more expensive every day. Regarding your booking, we did showed you some cheaper and bigger rooms with a window, but finally you chose this. And most of the home in HK and all HK hostels’ bathroom must be combined with shower and toilet unless you pay much more for the star hotel. The truth is our building has 6 lifts in different entrances so we have no idea why you chose to walk up 8 flights of stairs with your bags. If there's no lift, we doubt people would want to stay here. More importantly, we have most woman staff, a 24/7 security guard at the entrance and it is 100% untrue regarding your comment about sex shops around the building because it is illegal in this building. Did you walk to the wrong street? We agree that the space of Hong Kong is tiny but we keep all our rooms clean and safe with friendly staff members all in a great location. We hope you can understand and respect other cities and their culture. Thank you for visiting Hong Kong. Best Regards, Ms.Ellen (Rainbow) Oisuen Guesthouse manager
