Good location, very close to the subway station and at walking distance from the main interesting streets and the harbor.
It has a nice terrace at the 9th floor. Staff is helpful e speak good English.
Quite difficult to find it from the street, it is located in a pretty ugly building.
The room was definitely too small and dark and it had no space for the luggage. Air conditioning was super noisy. The tiny bathroom has the shower over the toilet so everything get wet after using it.
We definitely do not recommend it for more than 1-2 nights.

One thing that most people do know about traveling to Hong Kong is that accommodation rarely ever follows the whole ‘value for money’ concept, so it’s fair to say that I had a skewered idea when it came to choosing where to stay for my one week. I can tell you now, I made the best decision to stay at the very lovely Hop Inn. it has to be one of the only hostels that does offer accommodation for those on a budget whilst still maintaining a high quality of bedding and furniture, excellent customer service and rooms so spacious that you won’t be left feeling like Harry Potter in the cupboard below the stairs.

As I am extremely indecisive, I made the smart move to stay at both Hop Inn on Mody and Hop Inn on Carnarvon to really get the best of both worlds. Both are incredibly well located in Kowloon with just a few minutes’ walk to Tsim Sha Tsui station where it’s just a hop, skip and a jump away (3 stops on the MRT to be precise) to Mong Kok which is the place to be for all the action. The star ferry is also only a 10-minute walk away which will take you over to Hong Kong Island for all the glitz and glamour.

From the lovely, bright-eyed staff to the art filled decor, Hop Inn is guaranteed to make you feel warm at home, a quality that is so hard to find when travelling, especially in Asia. One of my favourite aspects of the accommodation was how they utilised the space to make it feel like an open sanctuary. The common rooms are filled with funky travel mementos gathered from around the world as well as greenery and sweet little touches like free water and tea making facilities to make those early mornings more manageable. Each room is unique to the next, with local artists showing off their talents on the four walls of the bedroom. This built excitement for me in the lead up to my stay as I couldn’t wait to see what art I would get to stare at for those late nights in bed.

Not only is Hop inn, one of my favourite hostels that I have ever stayed in, it was also one of the cleanest! I honestly don’t even think I could classify it as a hostel, it’s just so damn superior! I am absolutely positive that you will have a sublime stay at Hop Inn and it will make your trip to Hong Kong just that extra bit special.

I'm here for Chinese New Year visiting my daughter who's doing a semester at City University. I'm totally satisfied with the Hop Inn! This is comfortable budget travel with most of the benefits of much more expensive venues, and a lot more soul. Comfortable and welcoming for women, children, family, LGBT and solo travelers. Minutes from the MTR, the harbor and for us, the NY fireworks and parade, this is an iconic Kowloon location. Hop Inn is on the 9th floor, its roof garden (and most of the double rooms) with overviews of mazes of colorful neon strung across narrow, winding streets below. Because the Hyatt is just down the street, you can easily get here from the airport via the express train and airport shuttle bus. You will find nearby shops of all stripes from luxury to street vendors, dining from street stalls to Michelin stars, and winding walks leading to the waterfront, galleries, parks and museums; return to the Hop Inn for relaxing pit stops in the common room and rooftop garden w/ picnic tables. Amenities include free WIFI, flatscreen TVs in all rooms, unlimited DVDs, books and travel guides, a shared computer, fridge with beer and soft drinks for sale, hot and cold water at all times, a 7-11 next door and useful items such as hair dryers, adaptors and SIM cards. With comfortable beds and contemporary bathrooms, Hop Inn's rooms are typical for Hong Kong - compact as a cruise ship's - and cheerfully embellished graffiti-style by different local artists. No closets - only hanging hooks and narrow shelves. You will be rewarded for packing light! They have a baggage storage service (20 HKD per bag per day) should you go on overnights or short hops. I suppose you could store extra luggage this way during your stay if necessary....

This inn is highly recommended, and we will definitely return. Hard to find, like all gems...My kid, wife and i stayed till feb 3 in a triple room called 'chaos', and in contrast to its name, we enjoyed it immensely. The room was the most spacious we've seen compared to past hotels in hk.. And this is an inn!! The bed had soft, smooth and clean linens. We loved the common room and all of its dvd's. The location had a lot of good affordable asian restos nearby. Most of all, the staff were extremely friendly and nice --- refreshing for hk!! Continue being nice!!

Just got back from Hong Kong and I'd like to thank Hop Inn for affording us a pleasant stay in their hostel the entire time. This was preceded by a smooth reservation process done entirely through email. Like other hostels, they only get your credit card authorization at the time of reservation, but they do not charge your card for your entire stay yet. Upon check-in, that is when they give you the option to pay for your stay either by cash or credit card.

The location on Carnarvon Road was fantastic, it was not hard to look for the hostel at all coming off the nearest K3 shuttle bus stop at the basement entrance of the nearby K11 Mall/Hyatt Regency Hotel (read the instructions on how to get there at Hop Inn's website, it's pretty easy to follow). I like that the lobby of James S. Lee Mansion (where the hostel is located) is spacious enough and is easily accessible from the street. There are 2 elevators in the building, but only one leads directly to Hop Inn on the 9th floor; note that these elevators are rather small (maximum of 7 persons), which may be a problem for some people carrying a lot of luggage.

The elevator opens directly to the main foyer of Hop Inn, which has a small reception area for check in. The walls of the main hallway is filled with doodles and notes from past guests, and contemporary, if a little kitschy, art also can be found in the foyer & common area. This gives the hostel a youthful and fun vibe. The common area has a mac computer, a table football, darts, a fridge from which guests can buy different brands of beer and soda, and shelves filled with dvd's which guests can borrow to watch in their own rooms. This common area also opens out to a rooftop deck where guests can further lounge and socialize.

We stayed in room L5, and found it good enough. Just like other hostels, the room was very compact but held enough room for twin beds and space for our 2 carry-on bags and a suitcase. For people who can't pack light, this might be a problem. If you need space for several suitcases, you may be better off booking a proper hotel room instead. For us though, the space was enough, as we spent the entire day outside and basically just went back to our room to sleep & shower.

Speaking of which, I'd say that our room's toilet/shower is the smallest I've ever used. I'm 5 foot and five inches tall and I could not stretch my two arms without hitting the walls. It is basically the size of a large closet, but it has everything you need in it: handheld shower head (with hot water), toilet bowl, a small sink, mirror, plus shampoo and bath gel (no toothpaste/toothbrush though, so bring your own). I know a lot of people have issues with super small bathrooms, but I found this rather cute. When you think about it, it's really all the space you need anyway for a shower and a toilet (unless of course you have a large frame).

For couples, I would recommend booking a twin room instead of a double. Double beds in hostels in Hong Kong are really on the small side and you might have to squeeze into each other at night. Romantic, maybe, but definitely not comfortable after a whole day of sightseeing, when you just want more room in your bed to stretch your limbs out. While the twin beds are also rather small, you will find that the total area of the two beds is larger than the double bed, which means more room for each one of you to sleep in comfortably.

The room has no other furnishings, other than the wall mounted LED TV, the AC unit, and wall hooks behind the door where you can hang your clothes. It has no fridge or coffee/tea making facility; these can be found in the common area, along with a microwave oven and a drinking water dispenser.

The hostel does provide a bath towel and a pillow for each guest. Now this is my only problem with our stay in Hop Inn. The pillows are too soft and basically shrink in size the moment you lay your head on it, so we did request for an extra pillow each (which still was not enough). I hope the management considers this as an area for improvement. A nice standard pillow is definitely a must for guests to have a good sleep, and I hope they replace the ones they currently have.

In terms of service, the front desk girls were very friendly, helpful and easy to talk to, and they offer discounted tickets to most tourist attractions in Hong Kong. The housekeeping staff are also nice and do a good job keeping our rooms and the common area tidy. I never saw any bugs, roaches or even ants in our room during our stay. Again, it was a pleasant stay overall, and I'd definitely choose to book a room with them the next time we're back in Hong Kong.

Let me begin by saying that I usually travel budget and have extremely low expectations. The only thing I ask for is basically a bed, a shower and a good place to rest.
This is the first time I am travelling to HK for an exam and a good 2-3 hours of rest was of the utmost importance. Slept at 4am, got woken up by the counter staff talking very loudly at 7am, exam at 10am.
My wife requested politely for them to keep their voices down. Her requests were ignored however... So I went out and asked them to keep quiet as I needed the rest very badly.
The male Caucasian counter staff objected loudly by saying "what do you expect me to do?! WHISPER?!! You need to COMPROMISE!" He told me his name was 'Rand' and to go ahead to tell Simon about him!
Needless to say I won't be back. To those who need an uninterrupted rest I strongly suggest someplace else.

Response from Hopinn, Owner at Hop Inn
Responded 28 Jun 2013
I am really sorry to learn about what happened. For the bad night & the rudeness of our front desk staff, we are deeply sorry. After reading your message, I've tried to find out about what happened in that morning. As the management, we have no excuse but to take full responsibility for the bad service. I would like to express our most sincere apology. The staff who was involved in the incident is no longer part of our team. Again, I am sorry for all the inconvenience had caused. Simon Hop Inn

This place is nothing fancy- the rooms are very small, in fact. However, it is very clean, easy to find and in a great location. I would highly recommend staying here if you are watching your budget, but still want to be near all of the action in Hong Kong.

I stayed here for 4 nights from 25th Sep onwards in the Hankow branch. The location is great and really friendly staff. I would have given a 5 star if not for a number of hiccups along the way.

When we check in at around 12 noon, we were told the room was not ready and were asked to come back at 2pm which was reasonable. We returned promptly at 2pm after some shopping and the owner was very apologetic and told us because the cleaner was late, the room was not ready and asked us to come back at 3pm. I was slightly annoyed but decided to head out for the rest of the day. Upon returning at around 11pm, we were allocated Room 1 (just at the door) and entered the room for the first time. The floor was covered with a thin layer of dust and we were told later that this was due to renovation work happening in the building but i thought they should have done some thorough check before giving us the key. The room is small but was bigger than what i expected, the toilet is tiny and i felt that they could include a few hooks along the wall to hang clothes since it was an empty wall (with nice deco).

More unfortunate things happen after half an hour in the room, the aircon started to leak. It made my luggage wet and because of the positioning of the aircon (which is right above the TV), there was a danger that the water might short the TV. We informed the receptionist and to her credit, she promptly brought a bucket with towel to arrest the leak. She also offered to move us to the Carnavon branch if we wanted but since it was midnight, i decided against it. It was just our bad luck so we were hopefully something will be done by time we are back on the second day. To my dismay, the aircon started to leak again when we are back at midnight on the second day. Again, another staff apologize for this and promise to fix it the next day. True to his word it was fixed on the 3rd day. But somehow things just didn't go our way and the cleaner forgot to replace our towels with new ones (they did take 1 of the towel away but never place new ones), i had to request from the receptonist. But this series of incident just left me with a sour impression of the place. Thankfully the staff was very friendly and the room was kept in good condition (most of the time).

I would still recommend this place for budget conscious travellers and i personally believe the incidents that happen to me were partly due to my bad luck and the staff did everything they could to fix the problem.

Accessible by Tsim Sha Tsui D2 Exit / East Tsim Sha Tsui N2 Exit, right in the heart of TST! Your meals, breakfast to supper easily found along the street just a few steps away from the building. 7Eleven is just beside the lobby & there will be someone guarding the gate after midnight.

The cosmetic of the building looks alittle run down but you will soon realised that it doesn't affect your stay at all. Very fast you will feel cosy with the place from the helpful staffs at the counter.

Good points:
Good location, great service
Clean bedsheets, toilet
Towels changed everyday

Cons:
Queen size bed for a double room
No wardrobe, only 4 hooks/hangars behind the door

Definitely a place value for money!!

There is a mosque (Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre) near the Tsim Sha Tsui Station/Haiphong Road which is more or less a 10-minute walk from Hop Inn. For the room, I think they now have large rooms in their Hankow branch but you should confirm this with them since large rooms are usually booked in advance.

At Hop Inn Hankow, cooking is not allowed as well. I suppose, even at Hop Inn Mody Road, they don't allow you to cook too.
