Stayed in Sunny Day Hotel (Family Room) with my family for 6 nights during our visit to Hongkong.

- Location: Our taxi ride from the airport to the hotel took about 20-30 minutes and costed around HKD250. (Take the green ones from the airport taxi stand with meter fares)

Hotel is conveniently located just 2-3 streets away from the nearest MTR (Mongkok MTR, Exit C3) so it made traveling around Hongkong easier for us. The shops and eateries in Mongkok area usually close later than other parts of Hongkong so if you're someone who loves night shopping or supper, Mongkok is the area for you! :)

Langham Plaza, Ladies street (Tung Choi street) and Mens street (Temple street) are located nearby as well. It is also a walkable distance to Fa Yuen street (mostly shopping).

If you're looking at visiting Lan Kwai Fong, the popular night life district, it'll cost about 120HKD back to the hotel with the midnight additional charges.

- Lobby: The only disadvantage of this hotel is the flight of stairs you have to climb up and down each time you leave or enter the hotel. It can be rather troublesome for the elderly as it is about a 20-steps climb to get to the hotel lobby on level 2. There are no porter services so be prepared to carry and lug your luggage up and down the stairs yourself. :/

*Note that the entrance of the hotel is just a simple door with a signage so keep a lookout for the sign if it is your first time at this hotel and unsure about the location. Taxi drivers may not know about this hotel but they know where the street is.

- Check-in: We arrived around 11-12am and were glad that our room was ready before our check-in time. :) 500HKD deposit per room is required during check-in, which will be refunded upon check-out.

- Room: We booked the Family Room for the 3 of us (myself, my mum and my brother). Room was spacious enough to accommodate 3 adults and 3 huge luggage. Clean and neat. Do not expect much of a beautiful view as our view was rather bad despite staying on the highest floor of the hotel (level 13). However I guess that is not much of a problem as we're out of our room most of the time.

There were two beds, one queen and one super single. Both were comfortable and clean with lovely blankets that kept us warm during our stay. (It was rather chilly in hongkong during our stay there. About 16-21oC)

The toilet was my favorite part of the hotel as I am rather concern about the area that I have to use to freshen myself up every morning. It was clean and spacious. 3 bath towels were provided in plastic packaging which was rather pleasant as it shows that they cleaned and packed away nicely. Additional 3 face and hand towels were hung nicely on metal railings in the toilet. The shower area is also spacious with jacuzzi shower functions! (My favorite after a long day of walking)

Amenities were plentiful and replenished everyday. They provided shampoo, body wash, conditioner, shaving kit, vanity kit (cotton pads and such), shower cap and dental kit.

One disadvantage is that there wasn't any door bell! :( So be prepared for some door knocking every morning (around 9-10 am) by the housekeeping lady who will ask when the room will be available for her to clean.

- Service: Reception staff were nice to recommend some eateries nearby when we asked for recommendations for food. Service was fine, not fantastic and they will not go beyond to help unless asked to but good enough. :)

Housekeeping lady was friendly when she knocked on our door every morning.

- Check-out (12.00pm): Our request for late check-out was rejected as they said that there will be another guest after us. It was understandable so we were ready to leave by 11.30am. I was still packing some loose items into my luggage so my mother and brother went down to do the check-out first. However, they were not allowed to do the check-out until I was present and that the 2 room keys issued to us were returned. (They are particularly strict on room keys. Tried asking for one more during our stay but was rejected...) 500HKD deposit was refunded to us.

Our flight was rather late at 8.30pm so we stored our luggage at the lobby and went out for some last minute shopping. The male staff at the reception helped us to call for a taxi to the airport when we requested for one. Once again, no porter service available here so we had to lug our heavy luggage the stairs ourselves.

- Summary: This will be a good hotel at a reasonable pricing for its room and amenities. If you're looking for luxury, service and beautiful view, I'm sorry but this might not be what you'll want to book for your stay.

However, it is perfect for couples or families who do not mind about those qualities and just want somewhere nice and comfortable enough for a good rest every night. :)

- Additional notes: The roast goose food store just a few doors away from the hotel is really awesome! Must-try! :) A small mini-mart is located 2 doors away from the hotel, which is convenient if you're a forgetful traveler like me!

We stayed mid of March 2016 and price is very cheap. Receptionist are nice and helpful, able to communicate in English. We booked the standard room, not so spacious, with window view but location is center of city thus nothing to see. Location is quite nice because train station, shopping areas, fast food/eatery and night markets are nearby (especially one famous egg waffles and 24hrs Mcdo located almost beside of the hotel). Some positive things to say, the hotel is a decent one and they got some luggage room in case you want to keep when you are travelling after your check-out or going to Macau.Reason for not giving them a perfect rating because of the following 1.) you need to take stairs to the reception / main entrance of the hotel 2.) room so simple thus you don't prefer staying much in the hotel 3.) when we ask for cleaning up room, room is clean but im not sure if they change the bedsheets as we can see stains on it. Overall I still recommend it for those who just stay in hotel only at night and those who prefer there hotels surrounded by tourist attractions and food trips.

Stay here for 5 nights at Honeymoon Room. The room is clean and tidy, no strange smell or anything like that. The bed is quite comfy since me and wife is a bit fat. Bathroom is clean, amenities replaced everyday provided we put the towels at washing sink and red 'please clean' card on the bed. Wifi connection is not fast enough.

As other reviewer said, the downside is the welcome stair. The staff is not helpful but as we learn in this trips, most Hong Kong-ers are not a helpful person. Most of them is not speak or even understand English, basically we are on our self the whole time.

Location is great, there's a traditional market just around the corner, a big mall/hotel in front of the hotel, and food is a 5 minutes walk. Always prepare an umbrella since Hong Kong weather is unpredictable. There's a plastic for umbrella at every major store. Oh and bring your own empty bag(s) for your shopping, there's a $0.5 charge for a store plastic now.

tl,dr: The location is great, hotel is nice and clean.

Stayed here for 3 nights.

The location is excellent. The wifi works very well. The room is fairly spacious, is clean and is comfortable.

After two nights this place would have easily gotten a 4* rating from me and a recommendation.

So what went wrong?

It's the last night, it's 3am. We are sleeping peacefully preparing for a 13 hour flight. Suddenly a noise like an explosion. We woke up startled, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom. I opened the bathroom door and there was water everywhere. I don't know what happened. All I can say with any certainty is there was no water coming from the faucets or shower in our room. I assume was possibly a leak from above.

We quickly got dressed and packed our bags. Ran down to reception and explained to the man what happened. He called a female colleague to have her look into it. 5 minutes later there were firemen everywhere. Water had now escaped the bathroom and was on the floor of our room. It had also reached the elevator. Other rooms on our floor were being evacuated. Judging by other guests reactions I couldn't help but feel that we were getting the blame for this.

Finally the firemen left and the man at reception offered us another room. I gave him our room keycard and he asked for the other one. I advised it was still in the room in the card slot that enables electricity. He again called his colleague who told him it wasn't. I insisted that it was. It had never left that slot since we first entered the room - as mentioned above I had a very long flight and was charging some electrical items overnight in preparation. The card was definitely in the slot.

He refused to change our rooms until we had returned both keycards. He insisted I go upstairs and get it. So I had to go back up and wade through ankle high water looking for the keycard. I checked the slot and there was a staff members keycard there. Two feet away on a table I had never used was my spare room keycard. Clearly his female colleague had swapped ours for hers when originally entering the room. She then told the receptionist that I was lying and did not leave spare key in electric slot. Absolutely disgusting treatment. I have travelled all over the world and have stayed in hundreds of hotels and have never been treated with such contempt. Check my other hotel reviews on this website of which there are dozens. I am always fair and have never left a review as scathing as this.

So things couldn't get worse, right?

Wrong.

I took the other keycard to reception - in my now soaking wet clothes. I was at this point extremely annoyed but was being as polite as possible - I've learned through the years that being rude to service staff only makes things worse. So I gave him the card and you know what he asked me? He asked me for a deposit on the new room. At 0330 in the morning. When I had a flight that day and needed rest. When my room had flooded and I'd had to pack and exit the room in two minutes. When i'd been forced back into the flooded room to retrieve a keycard that had been left exactly where I had stated.

I like to think I'm a reasonable guy. I don't even blame this hotel for the flooding incident. A guest above me could easily have put the bathtub on and then fallen asleep. I can't hold the hotel responsible for that - however the way I was treated is something I will never forget. I was made to feel about two feet tall and all the while I was being calm and polite about my terrible experience.

I truly hope that another guest who was there that night (10 March 2015) leaves a review mentioning the incident as I am aware it sounds far fetched.

As for me, I'd stay anywhere but here in Hong Kong. I have reviewed 5 different hotels in Hong Kong on tripadvisor and would recommend any of them over sunny day in Mongkok.

The hotel is located amongst electrical installation supplies shop and a few HK cafe. You will see many lorries parked at the roadside to load pipes, wire, etc. There is also a local market at the side street. I will not recommend this hotel for elderly or people with big suitcase. There is no bell boy and the hotel staff will not assist in anyway on your luggages. The lift is located on the second floor and you will need to climb up one level of stairs before getting to the lift. The hotel basically occupy one column of a residential/commercial building. Rooms are generally clean but there is no fridge in the room. Nothing fantastic about this hotel except the proximity to Mongkok MTR station. I will recommend City View hotel if you would like to stay in Mongkok area. In comparison, I find city view hotel very much better than Sunny Day hotel.

Our first impression of this hotel was NOT great. DO NOT STAY HERE if you have Large BAGGAGE. At the entrance there is a flight of stairs and no assistance is offered. We all had large suitcases which has been fine in all other countries we've travelled through, there'd always be porters to help us or a lift system. When we got to this hotel after a tiring day at about 2am we went to reception and asked if there was anyone who could help us girls take up our luggage, the man at reception smirked and said, no, you take it up yourself to your room. Service? Non existent here!!! We had to lug 25 kg suitcases ourselves up the stairs while he sat at reception. Room was basic, sheets were dirty- pen or high lighter marks. Pillow had green/yellow stains on it. Not impressed!

On the up side- location is great, right near the heart of Mongkok so awesome for shopping and food, very close to Mongkok MTR.

All in all we would not stay here again.

If you come to HK looking to spend every day in your hotel, you're doing it wrong. Skip this hotel if you're looking for lux and immaculate service.

The big (read: only) drawcard for this hotel is its superb location. Step out the door and you're immediately right in the middle of the action. Within 50m, you'll find roast duck, vege markets, street markets, a subway station, foot massage(!!!), and a huge new shopping mall.

The area for a few blocks around is a real vibrant mix of old HK street feel and the brand new. There's a real difference with the street feel on Hong Kong island which is getting sterile and confected.

The wifi is really fast and is free.

This is really just a 2 star. Big flight of stairs to climb to get in. If you have heavy bags.....beware. No staff except 1 front desk. Place is a dive. Pretty good sized rooms for Hong Kong. But may not be worth it with the peeling wallpaper, and lack of heat in the winter. (We froze) If you did want to use the a/c...it's your basic hardware store window variety. Kinda like a motel 8....in Louisiana.

I was happy with our stay in the family room! Considering Hong Kong prices.. I think this hotel is good value for money. The room is nothing fancy.. but is reasonably spacious, comfortable and in a good location. Our toilet got blocked once during our stay, which I believe is a common occurrence as when my husband when to reception to inform the staff, the housekeeper promptly came to our room with tool in hand to fix it for us. The shower had great hot water and pressure.. which was lovely. And it's a minutes walk to the nearest mall and MTR station. We stayed here to visit HK Disneyland which was approx 30-45min and 3 trains ride away. Overall a comfortable and convenient place to stay - no complaints! :)

Hello, I stayed here previously in March/ April. The room I stayed in is the family room so I'm not sure about the other categories. There is a mini refrigerator in my room and early check in (around 12-1pm) was available for my room. However, if early check in is not possible, they do allow you to store your luggage at the lobby. This is also possible if you have a late flight and wish to store your luggage somewhere. I'm not sure about the mobile phone but we paid our room deposit with cash. Hope this helps and that you and your wife will enjoy the time in hongkong! :)
