About
VUE - Come as a guest, come back as a friend!
VUE Hotel Hou Hai is the new upscale design boutique hotel in the centre of Beijing. This one-of-a-kind brand new hotel is located in the stunning surroundings of Houhai and offers an unforgettable staycation experience in a design combination of traditional Chinese architecture with contemporary and futuristic influences.
The Hotel
A major adaptive-reuse exercise, the hotel comprises a series of quasi-historic buildings from the 1950s. Upon entering the hotel you will discover a series of landscaped gardens, a bakery café fronting the bustle of the hutongs, a signature restaurant in a warehouse, a rooftop bar overlooking the lake and over 80 rooms and suites, several with private gardens or with views overlooking the park or lake.
The hotel compound comprises a series of buildings with a variety of architectural styles and approaches. Although designed primarily in the Chinese vernacular, the different buildings span a range of ornamentation from highly decorative roof eaves, characterful gargoyles, sculptured balconies and latticed window frames, to pared-back jack roofs and plain brickwork wall finishes. This diverse collection is brought together by color and landscaping.
All the buildings are conceptually draped in attractive shades of gray, echoing the palette of the surrounding hutongs, upon which key architectural details have been highlighted in a contemporary gold patina.
The VUE property is designed around a central narrative inspired by its locale or culture. For VUE Houhai Beijing, the narrative drew inspiration from the lake and its animal inhabitants.
The Rooms
Bold, cutting-edge, surprising....that is how we describe the rooms at VUE Hotel. Beyond the contemporary aesthetic, every room is designed with your needs in mind.
The hotel offers 80 rooms fragmanted into 11 different room types. Every single type is unique and designed for a memorable stay.
From the intelligent lighting system to the room-wide Bluetooth audio system, from the in-room coffee machine to the hypoallergenic, 600-thread-count sheets, comfort and convenience are always at the forefront. All guest rooms feature spacious bathrooms, fully stocked with L’Occitane products. Ancient history, modern convenience, and futuristic design come together in harmony for an unforgettable guest experience at VUE Hotel.
Our Neighbourhood
VUE Hotel is located in Beijing, in the Hutong district of Houhai. The hotel compound sits on the edge of the picturesque Houhai lake, and neighbours a verdant public park, as well as historic Hutong houses which are still used by local inhabitants today. Located along Houhai’s banks are a district of bars and vibrant cafes.
The hotel looks out onto Houhai lake, while Prince Gong’s Mansion and the Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling are within walking distance. The hutongs are best explored on foot or by bike or rickshaw — just like the locals do. Stunning attractions such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, and the Temple of Heaven, are easily accessible by car or public transport.

When we arrived, I was asked how was our journey, and the limo service. I honestly gave feedback, one of the managers felt I was disappointed, he immediately made up to it. I would not give the details, but it was a generous gesture. That is top-notch customer service.
The breakfast service was also wonderful, the staff was very attentive and polite. I actually miss their delicious food.
We also had dinner, the servings were generous.
We spent the first three of our five days at The Vue feeling a weird disconnect with the place before realising why.
The pluses - this is a very well-designed place with lots of trendy tech touches. The light and sound proofing means one could sleep for days without realising there was an outside world, let alone that it might be sunny. L’Occitane is the bathroom brand of choice, the towels are luxuriously thick, the bedding is like sleeping on clouds and the two free daily bottles of water are from a Tibetan spring. All very very nice indeed.
The negatives - our irritation at the girl who checked us in whilst giving 49% of her attention to her phone, the very pricey Pink Rabbit Restaurant and Moon Bar where the service is of a tremendous effort but doesn’t quite ‘hit the spot’ and the cafe staff who leave the place (and customers) unattended to go out for a cigarette break. Normal life in the surrounding peaceful Hutong is an uncomfortably jarring million miles away from the £3 croissants and piped chilled-club tunes of The Vue.
And that’s the disconnect with the place - touring westerners are probably not the target market. I think thye target market here is the Chinese nouveaux-riches. Would I stay here again - as a western tourist traveller, probably not. It is a fantastic hotel but sticks out like a sore thumb in its locality and is comparatively poorly connected for tourism in Beijing. If I was a twenty something Chinese visitor with ‘cash to splash’ on a few days in the city, definitely.
1) Only 1 person (the manager) can communicate in English.
2) no concierge service. I called prior to my stay asking for help to book a restaurant but they refused my request.
3) no maps available. Should consider printing a map for guests so they know the nearby attractions.
4) most important one!! No AC or ventilation besides a window in the bathroom which is far from the bed. The room was so stuffy!
They said it was not summer so no AC will be turned on!! OMG... ridiculously!!
The hotel website definitely did not mention this!!! If i knew, I wouldn’t have booked this!
5) Traffic was very bad outside of the hotel. Took us 20 min from hotel to the Main Street (would be 10 min walk) when we were rushing to airport!
Anyway, the room was modern. The bed was comfy. The pillows were too soft so I asked for the latex pillow and it was hard as brick!
Overall, I won’t stay here again! There are plenty of hotel in Shanghai with better facilities and services!
The dinner in pink rabbit was also quite good. The breakfast had also good variety.
The only real issue we had is that most of the staff just do not speak sufficent english. So if you do not have any questions it is ok but otherwise it could be quite a problem.
Only one lady at the front desk was helpful. So this really has to improve.
I would definitly recommend this Hotel.
The rooms themselves were very funky.
Management spoke very good English.
