This hotel is well located for Peking University and the Summer Palace, and far away from all other tourist attractions. It is a Good Chinese hotel, with adequate facilities and spacious rooms. My room was very large and clean, facing the inner garden, with a comfortable bed and all the amenities that one could require. It needs some renovation, as you can see the wear and tear in the furnishings and bathroom. The gym is tiny but well equipped, and the swimming pool is very nice. The breakfast buffet is good, with a large selection of Chinese and Western dishes. I had dinner in the Chinese nicer restaurant and the food was also good. Service is efficient and courteous. Not all the staff members speak English, but they do their best. They were helpful arranging taxis and other special requests. My main concern is the huge amount of plastic waste that hotels of this category (not just this one) generate. I think it is time for these properties to do away with toiletry plastic containers, plastic water bottles, etc.

It's an ideal place to stay if you are there to visit Peking University. The rooms are spacious and clean. You can taste the local life style with the food and less tourists around. It's also convenient to take a subway and get to touristic sides. We cannot argue the fact that English is lingua franca however, It is weird to expect everyone to speak it. As long as you are open to communication you will find a way of understanding each other. Yes, not every staff speaks English but there's always someone at the front desk who could help you and try to understand what you need. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and recommend this hotel.

I think this hotel is a good choice for someone who plans to visit the campus nearby. Many universities are located in the area, not just the University of Beijing. There are a couple of subway stations at walking distance from the hotel, which is good too, though it can take around 10-15 minutes to get there. Distances in China are really long. The rooms at the hotel are spacious and quiet, and room service is usually done in the morning, which I found convenient. The hotel has three different restaurants, which is good because there are very few other places to eat in the immediate vicinity. Staff at the lobby make an effort to speak English though they are not really fluent, but that may be a difficulty in many other hotels in China.

That was my second stay there, and after one year it went downhill. Positive: they renovated the gym/pool area. That's about it, although a/c does not work well in the gym which is an issue when it's 36C outside. Negatives: service. It's an ostensibly 5* hotel, can they get a single person at the front desk who speaks English? Also it's a 5* hotel, can they let people settle their bills upon departure? They phoned me one day before I left and insisted that I settle the restaurant bill (I had a couple of lunches and dinners there so it was very modest) immediately. The problem is, the first person to call you does not speak English beyond 'come to the front desk'. Then they keep calling you every 15min while you are working in some faint hope that perhaps you are going to learn Chinese in those 15 minutes. Also, it's a 5* hotel, so after a full day away I was once surprised to find my rooms not cleaned. Explaining this to the staff in the evening, where even those who pretend the speak English are gone, was a challenge. Finally, I told them I would be leaving late in the evening (had a night flight) but my room was paid for that night. So they started calling me telling me the checkout time had passed - even though I still had the room paid for the next 24 hours! Trying to explain it to the person whose English vocabulary didn't extend beyond keywords "deposit" and "downstairs" was a daunting task. The bottom line: avoid, unless you have a magic way of spending time there without ever having to communicate with the staff.

I have been to over 25 countries and have NEVER received the level of service that I did from Lakeview. The check-in process was a nightmare and they weren't able to even help show us where we needed to go. The only saving grace about this hotel was that the room is extremely large and the bed is really comfortable and there are movies in English on TV. We went down to the bar to get drinks and ended up having to go upstairs to have them call a bartender. So I ordered a martini from the menu that was most like a Cosmo. She said, "no have that" and I said, "Ok, why?" and she said, "ok, we make for you". My boyfriend ordered an old fashioned which she also seemed confused about even though it was written in Mandarin as well. When I got my drink it tasted like rum, rubbing alcohol, and a mix of some weird fruit juices, and they made my boyfriends old fashioned with vodka. So we told the bartender they were wrong and she brought over the check which we said we were not paying because we were not going to drink the drinks. They called a manager down who said we had to pay and we said no, we were not going to drink the drinks. After 2 managers came down and they were yelling at each other in Mandarin they finally said ok. The next morning we went to the breakfast Buffett, sat down with our first plate and they said we had 10 minutes until they were removing the food although before we sat down and gave them our room number to charge they did not tell us that, nor did they have any posted time for the brunch. As we ate our first plate and went to get our first bite they were already taking away all the food. There was a Chinese man that they brought boxes of food too for him to take it to go but it seemed as a westerner, we would not be provided with the same courtesy. So we had the end of some bread and old butter, and cold bacon. I was furious as the service had already been terrible the day before. We asked to see the manager and they refused to take the breakfast off our bill or provide to go boxes so we could even have something to take back to the room their reason was that we got, "free drinks the day before". There was no arguing as everyone was yelling at each other in Mandarin, nobody knew where the manager was, when she came down she didn't speak English and had to have the desk clerk translate, she even rolled her eyes several times as we were standing in front of her listening to all of this happening. The neighborhood is far from anything. There was supposedly airport transportation but it cost more than a taxi or an Uber to the airport. I can't imagine the ordeal it would have been to arrange it anyways. The man at the taxi stand was nice but seemed helpless as they weren't able to call for taxis for us but instead had to wait in a remote hotel to hope that one would drive by. I felt bad for him and we still tipped him as he was the only one in the entire hotel that was helpful. They also treated us like complete thieves when we asked to see the pool area and they asked, "why?"........ wellllll....... we are staying at the hotel and want to see if we want to use the facilities. I am happy we were only staying one night as this experience was awful and the worst customer service in China. Not to mention the wifi was useless and didn't load or work anywhere in the hotel, totally frustrating when you need to still work and you are paying to stay in a 4+ star hotel. Disgraceful. Shame on you Lakeview!

As long as you're not expecting a five-star hotel like the Ritz Carlton, you should be happy here. At any rate, it's the best hotel on the PKU campus, so if you need something more luxurious, you're probably in the wrong neighborhood. The ordinary rooms are nice, with a fridge and comfortable bed; the suites (though a little pricy), are very nice, with more space than you're likely to need. The suites also entitle you to use the pleasant executive lounge on the sixth floor. Breakfast is superior but doesn't change much from day to day, so if you're here for a long-term stay, you'll start to get tired of it--and the biggest disadvantage of this hotel is that it's not within walking distance of any convenience store, so you'll have some planning to do. The little Japanese restaurant in the basement is better (in my opinion) than the main dining room in the lobby, though the Chinese food there isn't bad either (but the Western dishes are hit and miss). Nice swimming pool in the basement, too. The name Lakeview refers to the famous Weiming hu, a very picturesque pond on campus nearby, but I don't think any of the rooms actually offer a view of the lake. The staff is very helpful, but most of them do not speak English, so if you have trouble communicating in Mandarin, you might run into some problems. But everyone will do their best to understand you.

This place reminds me of the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Mass. It's not quite on the same level, but will get there. And packed with academics, students and other visitors to the university. I felt right at home.

Stayed a week in the hotel and found it clean and comfortable. Our room was large and modern with a comfortable bed, nice linen and ample space. the bathroom also a modern design. Service was very good. Excellent breakfast; lots of choice. The bar was pretty; but expensive with little choice and no ice. The sauna is free but you must pay to use the pool (a little disappointing) It is in the heart of the university and tech district which was convenient for us; but a little far from downtown. About a 10 minute walk to the subway. Would stay again when visiting the university district.

I have no idea why they call themselves 5*, at most it's a 4* but very badly maintained. Rooms definitely need a complete renovation; I actually had to change room as a/c and bathroom equipment broke down in quick succession, but even in the new (supposedly upgraded) room the sink was leaking and I had to call maintenance twice as a/c was making loud noises. Add to that poor sound insulation - and you have a picture of a very basic hotel indeed. The breakfast has variety but no quality. Finding English speaking staff could be a challenge. The only bonus is its location just next to the Peking University campus - but unless that's where you need to be, I would not recommend this hotel.

Great hotel - modern, conveniently located if visiting Peking University as it shares premises with the University. In fact I got to watch a graduation ceremony on my first day at the hotel. The food was really, really good and ranged from Chinese, Japanese to Western both at breakfast and dinner but I stuck to Chinese and Japanese. Although there is a "no smoking" sign in the lobby, the hotel does not seem to enforce this rule as the carpets in the passages smelt of cigarettes. In relation to the shopping centres (Xidan), markets (Silk Road) and Tiananmen Square, the hotel is not so conveniently located as the nearest underground station, East Gate of Peking University station (approx 300m from hotel) is 15 - 20 stations away and takes approx. 45 -60mins one way. Otherwise great hotel and planning to revisit with family despite staff/guest language barriers at times!
