Hotel's Favourite
Our family did a 9-day tour of Israel and Jordan. With all the moving around we did, we were incredibly thankful for 4 nights in Jerusalem, and that those 4 nights were at The American Colony hotel. All the details have been well thought through at this historic and beautifully maintained property. This was our first time staying at a "boutique" hotel instead of a large chain. The service was warm, welcoming, and outstanding by EVERYone we encountered. We are family of 4 and at the recommendation of our tour company, we booked two Pasha Deluxe rooms. We were very glad we paid a little extra for these rooms - it was worth every penny! We basically had our own suite - the rooms were not connected but we had a separate entrance in the hallway that we could lock while keeping our room doors open for easier access. It was perfect for our family! The rooms were very clean and spacious. (Even though this is an old property - it didn't feel, or smell, old and tired.) We were grateful for the extra space, comfortable beds, and well-equipped bathrooms after our long days of touring. Bonuses: The bathrooms had heated floors!! The showers had amazing water pressure. And, the minibar in the rooms had complimentary beverages that they restocked each day. After pounding the pavement all day, we were glad to "stay in" 3 out of the 4 evenings we were there. We ate dinner at the Cellar Bar and Val's and also got room service. We felt the prices were very fair for a boutique hotel and we all enjoyed everything we ordered. The portions were also very generous. The breakfast buffet (included with the room rate) was fabulous and the service there was also outstanding. We highly recommend this beautiful property that has a rich history in an excellent location in Jerusalem. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We stayed for a week at the American Colony, celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. A wonderful hotel with a rich and fascinating history. Don't miss the beautiful ceramic tiles artwork by the Armenian master David Ohannessian in the lobby. There, and in the connecting corridors, you will also find a lot of photos of the former inhabitants, i.e. the Americans and Swedes who constituted the religious community The American Colony. If you're interested in the history you can read the novel "Jerusalem" by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf which you most certainly can find in the bookshop at the hotel. The novel, first published in 1901, describes how 40 farmers from Sweden emigrated to Jerusalem in 1895 to join group of Americans, together forming the American Colony community. There is also a small museum ("The Archive") at the hotel that, unfortunately, is normally closed but if you ask at the reception they might be able to organise a guided tour for you. Weather allowing, breakfast is had in the beautiful inner court yard, a real "Angolo del Paradiso" where also lunch and dinner is being served. An insider tip is the East House garden where you're invited to sit under the centennial olive tree reading your favourite book. The garden is planted with edible species; don't be surprised if you will meet the Chef there collecting spice plants for today's dinner. Finally there is a gorgeous outdoor pool at the hotel, allowing for swimming exercise before dinner. We just missed one thing - our old friend "Mussa", the hotel cat wasn't around any more. However the management has assured us that at our next visit a new hotel cat will have been employed. The screening of applicants is ongoing... An establishment of this calibre definitely needs a hotel cat.

Loved this hotel. Excellent cocktails, and our tour group was served very good meals (In my opinion their regular menu is not a sure bet). Excellent breakfasts! Walking distance to the Old City and the main shopping district, safe area. Lots of character and low key, beautiful garden.

Beautiful very large room in a magnificent former palace a nice walk away from the walled city. The service is very friendly but discreet. The meals are copious and good. The cellar bar is wonderful. Nice pool. The furniture of the interior breakfast room is dated.

Was there with a group. Lovely hotel, with lush gardens and an attentive staff. We had a spacious room with a comfortable bed and bathroom with two sinks, along with our private garden terrace. The breakfasts are not to be missed.

What a special place! The rooms were spotlesssly clean - the staff were so kind and welcoming - and helped with any need ! the housekeeping even did extra checks in the evening to see if you needed anything (and brought chocolates!) the bathrooms were so clean, and stocked well with lovely supplies and soaps … the restaurant food was delicious and the breakfast bar - the most amazing I’ve ever seen! The gardens were so lush and well-kept … it was like staying in a little Paradise! We so hope to come back again!
