i've resided in the golden gate hostel/inn at least 5 times over the past decade. it feels like home. the staff, especially sinaan and lutfi, are helpful and welcoming. i prefer the dorm because of its spaciousness and cost. i use the kitchen but miss the breakfasts which the hostel once offered. the location is ideal, 10 minutes from the damascus gate. aside from the excellence of the hostel (and its history as a khan or inn, dating from the 1400s, the mamluk period), the old city has within reach most anything one could hope for, including a unique mix of people, jewish israelis and palestinians obviously, coexisting, but also people from all over the world.
This place has room options within Old City. It was very dirty though. We were here a week, and found it difficult because of the mildew and dust and dirt. The walls are very thin. We could here others brushing their teeth and whispering. There is WiFi in the lobby, but only worked occasionally. This is probably common throughout. It is in a good location just inside the Damascus Gate.
Place has a kitchen so you can have your meals as well. Would recommend to anybody anytime. Neat and clean. Free wifi available. Bathrooms are small but it's not really a problem. Variety of rooms to suit your family size. Tea coffee available 24/7
Went with a group of 13 people. Really nice experience. Almost everything is good. Very near to all Holy Sites. Felt like home. Mr Lutfi (the owner) is very helpful person. Will definitely go there again.
If you're a budget traveller, that's a great choice in the Old Town. It's clean, quiet and the staff are really kind and helpful. We spent there 5 nights in August and it proved to be a really good decision. Centrally located, with air-condition in the room, we could drop by any time of the day to take rest and continue our Old Town visit. The price was really competitive taking into account that the breakfast was not limited in any way (although a little monotonous after 5 days).
This was my first stay in a hostel and it was very comfortable. The owner was very nice. The room was clean with air conditioning. The shower was nice and hot, but be cautious because the shower is very slippery. I would definitely stay again.
Very good location. Free mint tea in reception. Everything was very clean. The staff/owners are very helpful. I booked through the website and everything was very straightforward. The breakfast is not exciting but it's perfectly ok.
I stayed here for the second part of my stay in Jerusalem and it was recommended to my by the previous hotel (Hashimi), who had no availability. The hotel is within 10 minutes walk of all major landmarks in the old city. As per any buildings in the old city, access requires climbing some steps. I went to look at it before booking and met the manager, Abu Abdullah, who was very welcoming and friendly. He showed me the room he was offering and it was very spacious for me, my wife and baby daughter. The en suite bathroom was very clean. Considering the building is obviously very old, the room was very clean and spacious. Breakfast is available and this consists of bread, eggs and dips (hummus, yoghurt etc). You can get complimentary tea and coffee from reception at any time. The other staff members (Bashar and Sinan) also made an extra effort with me and all the staff would always tell me that this was my home. I felt very comfortable staying here and would definitely consider staying again. The quality of service and the cost of the stay make this an option worth considering.…
Golden Gate is a terrific value in the old city. Located near the Damascus Gate, the Golden Gate is less than a ten minute walk to the Dome of the Rock, the Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The building dates to the 12th century, so if something doesn't work or seem right, ask the staff. They will fix it right away or take care of the issue. The staff, throughout our time there, and we stayed at the Golden Gate for about 10 nights in a 18 night trip to Palestine, was exceptional. They were always courteous, helpful and informative. We've stayed at Golden Gate before and we will continue to stay at Golden Gate because it is a clean, affordable, friendly and dependable hostel in an amazing location.
Right in the middle of the Old Town, the hostel is good for budget conscious travelers and those seeking a convenient and clean place to rest. It's basic but for its price offers incredible value for money. The staff are also very friendly and helpful.
