We had a fantastic time on our three day tour of 'wonders of UB'. Doljmaa was so helpful and prompt in her email replies when we were puting the trip together. She was also there to greet us on our first day of tour.

Our driver Ziggi and guide Mando were amazing! We were there in the quiet season so it was just me and my boyfriend on the tour and we got on so well with them. Mando was very interesting and knowledgeable, and Ziggi was such a good driver, and even changed the cam-belt on the side of the road in less than half an hour. Hero! They took such good care of us.

The tour itself was fantastic! The camel and horse ride were fantastic as were the temples. The nomadic people were the highlight. They were so welcoming and staying with them seeing the way they live made it a real adventure.

Loved every minute! If you like adventure then these tours are incredible! Highly recomend!

I traveled to Mongolia with my in November. When we arrived, we were picked up from the train station free of charge. Then we went to the hostel. The hostel is absolutely fantastic. It is close to downtown. It is so clean, managed well and someone is always available on site 24/7 Also it offers basic facilities travelers need like functional water heater, laundry, comfortable bed and, nice kitchen etc. We had no idea what to do in Mongolia. There were some travelers in hostel some of them had some tours, some of them just stayed for a long time there. After that we found out Sunpath is not only hostel but also it is a tour operator. The hostel was such as nice area to meet people. So we asked her what we could do in Mongolia then Doljma offered some tours. That was really helpful. Otherwise we would have stayed in UB.
We did 8 days tour to the amazing Gobi desert. Our guide was Bilguun and driver was Davka. Even our driver doesn’t speak English. He’s very funny and always tells jokes. Bilguun speaks English very well just like a native speaker. Also he cooks very well more than what we expected. During our trip we always stayed with real nomadic families. All these nomadic families were very welcoming and friendly. These 8 days we just knew what Mongolia is and what nomadic life style is. Their culture is just unique in the world. Our last evening we all cooked the most delicious Mongolian traditional barbeque. Before we came here in Mongolia we had traveled to many countries but that trip was just awesome. Sunpath Mongolia made our trip absolutely fantastic.
We will highly recommend Sunpath Mongolia without hesitation.
We’ll definitely come back to Mongolia.

When we first booked this youth hostel we booked in for two nights across a week with the intention of doing a Mongolian outback tour between the dates of stay.

On arrival the host was very pleasant and walked us through the options available through her for 3 and 4 day outback tours. Not quite ready to commit to anything we decided to go sightseeing in Ulan Bataar for the day and happened to come across another tour company offering a better deal and choices for tours.

When we advised the host at Sunpath that we would be doing a tour with another company she advised us that no only would we no longer be able to leave our bags at the hostel while we were away but also (magically and despite having email confirmation of bookings) that our final night back in the hostel was not available anymore.

So what you need to be very aware of is that unless you are going to book an outback tour with Sunpath as part of your stay, not only are you not welcome to stay as a backpacker but you are forcibly told to get out.

We witnessed this happen to another American lady who had been sent to Sunpath as a recommendation, as soon as she advised she did not want to do an outback tour she was also kicked out.

After some length discussion with the owner of Sunpath I was told that the above approach was Mongolian Custom - sorry to say I don't buy into this theory. As a traveler I have stayed in many hostels and have never ever been told I cant stay because I don't book a tour. Its basically bad management.

We ended up booking another hostel for our last night, this hostel could not go far enough out of their way to make us feel welcome, so Sunpath, please step up your game if you want to stay in business.

I booked a single room (what they call double) for 2 nights but when I arrived one day earlier Doljmaa told me that private room wasnt available and she was putting me in the room with another girl. I was ok with that. As soon as I arrived Doljmaa was pushing me for tours even if I just wanted to go around and ask first- she was pushing us to buy her 1 day tour for 260$, but we booked the same tour with another hostel only for 55(!!!) Reading previous reviews we decided not to tell her that we went with someone else as we didnt want to be kicked out of the room in the middle of the night!
The girl I was sharing the room and myself, we didnt feel comfortable staying in the common area as the man was just staring all the time and there was a wry weird unfriendly atmosphere coming from the family! So we end up hanging out in other hostel where we booked a trip and where people were helpful with directions and were even writing is down where and what to eat and why buses to take to the market (even if we were not staying there!)
As I was leaving and was paying the bill, Doljmaa counted on her calculator that I had to pay 14$ (cause I stayed 2 nights in dorm for 7$ instead of 20$ for private), but when I have her 20 as she didnt have change she just told me that I kind of had a double room sharing with another girl (even if I have never met her before!), so we got "private double" and have to pay 10$ each! Not a big deal, but just the way it was done wasnt really professional!
I am disappointed in my stay after all reviews written here- I just felt I was treated like a fat wallet and the only thing they cared was to book us on any tour possible with them!

stayed there for 3 nights. The hostel was clean, cheap and spacious and comfortable hostel. Free wife, comfy bed, cozy room, free basic breakfast(tea jam bread) and laundry is available. Therefore It was really nice to hang out with other travellers.
Had a tour to Orkhon National Park(what they call "Red waterfall") for 5 days and the price was reasonable. The tour was amazing excellent English speaking guide and funny driver, also good russian van.

Strongly recommending this place.

The hostel has brand new mattresses, is very clean and has a (basic) breakfast included.
It could use an additional bathroom, but in general it would be great value for money.
If it weren't for the hosts. To them, apparently, the hostel is only a way to get people into buying their tours. Every time I sat in the communal area to read or just relax, the owner, Doljmaa, would put on her fake smile, sit next to me and try to book me on a tour.
And eventually, when it was clear that we would do everything independently, my friend and I basically received a persona non grata treatment. We didn't even want to sit in the communal area any more, because the vibe coming from the owners was so very uneasy.
They also refused to store our luggage while we went hitchhiking to Kharkhorin monastery, with the lame excuse that they would have 16 guests coming in, who immediately go on a tour, so they need all their storage space....suuuuuure...

If you're only passing through Ulaanbaator, the place is good enough for a night or two. If you want to book a tour with them, I guess you'll be fine. But don't expect that you could this place as your base for independently exploring central Mongolia.

Absolutely fantastic stay!! The host there took great care of us, always made time for everyone, provided us with an amazing tour with an amazing driver, amazing tour guide, and amazing 7 day trip through the Gobi Desert. The whole atmosphere was so warm and friendly in a city that can feel foreign. I recommend it 5 STARS! I stayed in a hotel my first two nights because hotels are also cheap, but it was a big mistake. Sunpath Hostel is the way to go in Ulan Bataar!! Their tours are very cheap and of very high quality as well. Normally I don't do tours but was so happy I did on this trip with this hostel's management. Fantastic.

We spent 2 weeks in Mongolia and stayed at 2 different hostels before and after our country tour. Although our first hostel is a well known, popular hostel, the comparison with Sunpath was night and day! Sunpath is a newer hostel, the place is clean, facilities great, staff friendly and the owner understands the need of backpackers. They are motivated to give you a great experience. Wether you are in for a tour, or just to explore UB for a few days, come here and get it organized. Tell the owner what you need and your budget, she will do her best to help you.
When she learned of our budget constraints, she talked to other guests in the hostels to go on our day tour, and got the cost reduced by 3 folds so we were able to go. It was a win win situation for the both of us. A very kind, smart, and helpful lady!
