We booked the hotel limo transfer by BMW 7 series, met by a liveried chauffeur at the airport and this set the tone for our whole stay.

The hotel is centrally located near the Opera House in the French Quarter and a few minutes walk from Hoan Kiem lake with the Old Quarter, Hang Gai etc a little bit further.

The reception staff were warm and friendly whilst also efficient. The Vietnamese nature is a little more reserved than say the Thai one but we felt very welcomed and the process was quick.

We had a Grand Luxury Room in the Historic Wing overlooking the street and apart from one night where some noisy construction next door went on most of the night it was quiet enough for good sleep. The room was big enough to accommodate us and our 3 suitcases with dark wood floors and muted relaxing lighting.

The bathroom room was large with a big powerful shower and quality wash products.

The hotel has several places to eat though we only ate in the Bamboo Bar and breakfast. The bar selection good with both western and Vietnamese options. The food was good quality and reasonably large portions.

The breakfast was sumptuous and delicious. There was the obligatory bacon and sausages for the less adventurous but also a good selection of eastern and Vietnamese options including dim sum. Again the staff were excellent serving great coffee including the Hanoi speciality of egg coffee.

There is a pool, not large but as the weather wasnt the best it wasnt too busy.

There are a few luxury goods shops in the hotel for those who desire them like Patek Philippe, Hublot, Chopard etc

The Bamboo Bar is a relaxing calm oasis with a decent selection of wine beers and cocktails.

There was only one problem on Valentine's night where the food took over an hour to be served. We asked where it was and both the bar manager and hotel manager apologised profusely and made an acceptable gesture for the inconvenience....reputation restored.

We went on the bomb shelter tour which was quite an eye opener to the horrors of the Vietnam War. It was well worth it, informative and a must do if you stay there.

Overall this is a Grand Dame of the hotel world. Old fashioned service and style is in abundance in a historic building close to the centre of Hanoi.

My family booked two rooms at the Opera Wing at Sofitel Metropole Hanoi from 27th till 31st Jan. Check in experience was sublime - accomplished at the reception lounge rather than behind the desk. Our connecting rooms were not ready at around after 1pm , not a problem, we ventured out around Hoang Kiem lake to have a bite before final checkin to our rooms. Our luggages were already correctly placed and our golf bags stowed at the ground level baggage store. Rooms, pretty much befitting the class hotel Sofitel Metropole boasts of. Tet or not, our rooms were quiet on the 2nd floor. Hotel facilities, we adored the several bars.. drinks, cocktails were sublime especially at Angelina! We also dined at Le Beaulieu and were very pleased with the french cuisine quality. Breakfast buffet at Spice Garden or Le Beaulieu were notable. Overall, staff were extremely courteous and helpful everywhere and will go all out to assist you! The gym, wonderful! Do keep it up Sofitel Metropole Hanoi, you are the best for now! Location, at Old Quarters at the lake, perfect!!!

I recently stayed at the Metropole for 14 days for COVID quarantine. I'm told it's right in the heart of many tourist sites, but unfortunately I can't vouch for that since I didn't step outside. However, the hotel and staff were such a great experience.

The staff was very attentive and available at any time to ensure I was comfortable and had what I needed. We communicated via WhatsApp anytime I had a question or request.

The hotel room was incredibly comfortable with lots of space, which is important when confined in that space 24/7. If I could, I would take the bedding with me 0 large feather pillows, down comforter, and a soft pillow top to the mattress. There was one outlet located above the nightstand (personally I prefer two outlets as I have multiple devices which need charging) but there were an additional two outlets above the desk on the other side of the room. Although a historical hotel, the windows are updated and kept out the street noise really well.

The bathroom was sizeable with a separate tub and shower. The shower had impressive water pressure with a rain shower and hand sprayer. Hot water was plentiful. Not sure if it was necessary, but I used the complimentary bottled water for brushing my teeth. The tub is walled in glass, with a glass door entry, which makes it difficult to maneuver if suffering from mobility issues. Toiletries provided were by Hermes.

The food was fantastic! Being quarantined, there was a meal plan, which provided 3 meals per day. The meals were overly plentiful - breakfast came with fresh-baked pastries, fresh squeezed juice of my preference, fresh tropical fruit, plus whatever specialty dish I requested (eggs, french toast, etc). Lunch was sufficient to be lunch AND dinner, and the desserts were fabulous!

I would definitely stay here again - I just hope next time it's not the COVID quarantine ward :)

When we checked in, Mai (sp?) — who my wife thought was about the cutest 4’10” young woman she had ever seen...in her Victorian (?) garb and all — greeted us and asked us to take a seat in the lobby. She handled everything as we were enjoying the beverage they offered.

The Service

We placed a complicated room service order three times. (Why complicated? I can’t go there.) Perhaps like no other hotel I can remember, the clerk specifically repeated every aspect of our request, every time and in perfect English. Each time they told us, “30 minutes.” The most we waited might have been 20.

When we called for more tissues, more toilet paper, more water, more towels, more — well, you get the point — within perhaps two minutes there was a soft knock on our door.

The Metropole has a Parisian feel to it, with period decor, etc. This is visually a very attractive facility. We probably only explored half of it.

The hotel itself boasts quite an interesting history and tours are available of the basement area but we didn’t have time. There are (I believe) four restaurants, each aesthetically very attractive to elegant. The food we tried was excellent, as was the breakfast, which included honey in the honeycomb. Pretty cool, and very healthy.

Our room was smallish, not much different than what you would find in Europe. The bathroom was small and snug and our traveling partners complained (to us) that having the toilet “in the open” behind the sink was “uncomfortable.” The vanity was tight and the shower/tub, while functionally fine (I loved the pressure), was a bit of a safety hazard in that bathers have to step up and step down to enter and exit. Finally, the bed was less than stellar, somewhat hard and “cardboardish.”

But regardless, we really liked the Metropole. Let me add that we loved the location, a block or so from the water and one minute from shopping, the opera house and a Starbucks. If we return to Hanoi would will probably stay here again.

After more that 20 hours of travel, the Metropole was the perfect place to land. We splurged on the pick-up package and it was well worth it: having arrived blurry eyed and exhausted, we were expertly greeted and guided from the airport straight up into our room in what seemed like no time. Our first meal of Pho and spring rolls (my daughter swears they were the best of the trip) accompanied by a cold beer in the lovely open-air bar/restaurant was the perfect end to a long but smooth journey. We opted to stay in the historic wing and would certainly recommend. While the open bar next to the pool was a lovely place to regroup and have a cold drink at the end of the day there are so many options for great coffee and food just a stone’s throw from the hotel. You are spoiled for choices. The service was fantastic, and the location couldn’t have been better for walking around the lake and exploring the French quarter. You can certainly find cheaper but for our first visit couldn’t imagine a better landing spot.

I had the most wonderful 40th birthday celebration. The attention to detail and most warm and friendly service. It's a truly world class heritage hotel. I stayed in a Grand Premium King Room and it was worth paying the premium. The room is spacious, comfortable and well designed. The team recognized my special birthday and arranged a birthday cake with special message and a beautiful birthday card. I love the Hermes bathroom amenities, ultra luxurious. The afternoon tea, pre-dinner drinks (with a two-hour free flow champagne) and another welcome cocktail at the chic Angelina Bar. It was absolutely marvelous! I enjoyed the tour to the bomb shelter and illustrious history of the hotel. The memories will last for a lifetime. I just have one comment is please consider to stop using plastic bottles for the mineral waters in the room. Pls use reusable glass bottles as it's important that we all show genuine car for our environment. I look forward to returning. Thank you once again for a wonderful stay!

We were booked on an inclusive package with a tour operator that offered a land extension with the Mekong River cruise. The hotel is set right in the center of Vietnam where there are many remnants of the French Colonial era. The hotel is an older structure that has renovated to meet the charm and opulence of its “Golden Age” right from the entrance with its classic Citroen autos to its personnel in beautiful Asian and European style clothing. The service is impeccable. Our room was beautiful with décor that suited the overall style of the hotel. The entire experience was one that exuded luxury. We had our meals in the hotel restaurants, and all of them were excellent. The grounds are well kept and a nice addition to an inner city hotel. This hotel is among one of the best we have ever stayed.

The Metropole would be a great experience if it were only for its beautiful French Colonial architecture, terrific pool and bars, of interesting guests, grand guest rooms and very diligent service. But add its history during the various Indochinese wars, including celebrity guests and underground tunnels, and a guest has a total cosmopolitan and historical experience, not just a hotel stay. On a recent stay, house staff went above and beyond to find me a proper room and make softer what I found to be an overly hard bed. They offered to obtain meds and medical attention when my husband became ill. They do not miss a stroke.
A few suggestions: The breakfast/lunch restaurant could up its game a bit. If a traveler can afford a higher level room than the “entry level” one, they will be rewarded. The boutique could sell more authentic local handricrafts from the Hanoi area (ceramics, paper, teas, eg.) instead of the plastic jewelry and run of the mill souvenirs. Some of the rooms have inferior quality fixtures in the bathrooms that are surprising.
Nevertheless, I’d return to this hotel in a heartbeat when passing through Hanoi again.

Checked in before midnight after 3 flights, 30 hours of traveling and countless time zones … aah, I feel like I have happily come home to roost. In the 3 short hours I have been here, the staff at this hotel have already exceeded any experience I have had around the world (including on 60m Superyachts, two One & Only resorts, numerous Ritz Carlton hotels & several private lodge properties).

Valet welcome was warm, efficient and invisible, giving me an immediate sense of trusting my bags to him while I was whisked away to a private corner of the lobby for a seamless, unfussy checkin. I felt seen, I felt pampered, I felt valued as a guest and genuinely welcomed … all with true professionalism. Any question a new guest may have was answered before the need to ask. 6 stars.

The enthusiastic bell hop Long (not the correct spelling) with great care for my comfort, ushered me into the elevator and presented my room to me as if it was a palace :) .. and rightly so …
I love the room, queen size superior overlooking the pool. Spacious and so beautifully appointed; the attention to detail, the clever space planning and strategic placement of furniture and accessories is faultless. Love the simple red red rose in a bud vase with a delicious boxed Madeline … the devil is in the details and in this case, definitely Angels!

The tasteful neo classical design is exquisite with gorgeous furnishings and luxurious linens. Bathroom is heavenly … I want for nothing here.

While I boiled the kettle for tea, Long dashed out on his scooter to pick me up pho from his favourite haunt; this then with great style “transferred” to hotel china and served on a tray with white linen, befitting a hotel of this standard. BTW the pho was so delicious, it may just become my late night routine for the next 3 nights I am staying here ;)

Unpacking a breeze with 2 luggage racks (thank you, one is never enough for ladies); both wooden and padded satin hangers :)
Pressing service no problem at 2am .. even offered an iron & board should I wish to take care of this myself … thoughtful, proactive housekeeping appreciated.

There is no denying the hotel is exquisite; however the heart comes from the people who work on the frontlines to serve the guests. Rarely have I encountered such consistent genuine warmth coupled with professionalism and a service level that matches 6 star expectations. Words, no matter how skillfully written, fail to adequately express the feeling, the energy in this wonderful hotel … try it for yourself.

Thank you, thank you … this is a 3 week bucket list holiday for me; however the staff here have me rethinking another visit to Vietnam. You do your country proud!

I loved this hotel. Once inside, you would definitely not think you were in a major city, everything is so calm and peaceful. The hotel has been extremely well decorated, everything screams of top quality and taste.

The staff have also been very well trained. They are progressional but friendly and go above and beyond to make sure you have a great stay.

The on-site gym is also very good. It has everything you need for a good workout.

We upgraded our package to include afternoon tea and evening cocktails and canapés. Make sure you do this, you won’t be disappointed.

Will definitely like to return one day.

We had friends who booked the rooms with club level benefits and they assured us it was fabulous. The breakfast buffet provided in the main hotel is very good. Generous and plentiful but I'm not sure about the in room dining experience. Enjoy your stay
