#15 of 123 hotels in Kigali
Welcome to Hotel des Mille Collines The legacy of hospitality in Rwanda for more than 45 years Inspired by Rwanda’s unforgettable geographical terrain, the hotel derives its name from its motherland known as the “land of a thousand hills.” Inaugurated in 1973 as the premier grand hotel of the country and becoming a shelter to, a light of hope in the darkness for a terrified crowd of up to 2,000 people who were saved by the hotel opening its doors in 1994 during the Genocide against the Tutsi; Hôtel des Mille Collines is surely the most famous hotel in Rwanda. Located in the central business district, the hotel allows you to enjoy the breathtaking views over the hills of Kigali while indulging in culinary delights from casual to fine dining, international cuisine to local signature dishes!

This hotel is in the process of a remodel and the phone in your room will not contact anyone except if you use the "room service" button. That is the only line where someone will answer. We had an unfortunate experience where I needed to get a hold of a doctor in the middle of the night and could not reach anyone to help me. It was a bit frightening, in that, i was in a different country and had no idea of who I may contact. Fortuneatly we had Global Medical care and I was able to reach a doctor via telephone. Secondly, the following day, we were hoping to get some sleep before a midnight flight because we had not slept the night before and there was a hip hop dj playing music outside ALL DAY! We heard nothing but base the entire day until 5:00 pm. It was the worst hotel experience I've ever had. In addition, two days of cold showers. Good luck with this hotel if you are staying there. It looks good but it's not!

We were given a chic suite that had been recently updated and was decorated in a mild African motif with a transitional modern flair. Unfortunately I don’t think the room had been tested by actual guests, resulting in a number of minor inconveniences – no place to hang your wet towel in the bathroom, no outlet for the hair dryer in the bathroom, the cord to the coffee machine was not long enough to reach the outlet, no coffee pods for the coffee machine and the air conditioning unit in the bedroom didn’t cool. The room looked great but didn’t function well. Still, we were happy to have the extra space as our flight was delayed from a 12:50pm departure to a 23:45 departure. The hotel grounds are well appointed with a spacious bar and outdoor dining area, great pool and surrounding gardens. The service in the bar/dining area is super slow. Lots of hotel staff milling about but getting someone to actually bring you a menu, drinks and food is a lengthy waiting game. Once the food arrived it was hit or miss, some dishes were well prepared and served hot others had been sitting somewhere and served barely room temperature. The breakfast buffet is well done with an excellent assortment of cut fresh fruit all nicely ripened and tasty. During our stay the reception area was being redone which made communication with the reception difficult. You had to either call room service or walk down to the interim reception area. That said requests were handled quickly and efficiently. We had a number of documents that needed to be printed for our onward travels which were delivered to our room. Our biggest complaint was the afternoon DJ that played a loud dance music mix until 5 in the afternoon. As we had a midnight flight we were trying to get some rest after lunch and were unable to sleep with the loud bass pumping through our room.

I had the best experience at Hotel des Mille Collines, it is among the best hotels in Rwanda and the service and care I received there proved it correct. I had an amazing stay there, their staff is very proffessional and the service quality is impecable. If you stay at Mille Collines I recommend you ask for a room with a view to the pool and/or the city, the scenery is beyond amazing to witness at night.

Service is a bit inconsistent, but when it is there, it is very good. Now is the COVID “reopening” period. Only the pool bar and pool are open. Few patrons, no live entertainment. The room is small but comfortable. The TV is very old with few channels. Housekeeping, room service, and food are good.

I ended up here because it was one of the approved hotels for people that needed to quarantine on arrival. The Rwandans are thoroughly well organised on this. From getting off the aircraft all the way though to arriving at the hotel, everything was right. I was lucky. Getting tested about 3am when I arrived, I had a negative result soon after I awoke and was moved from the quarantine floor. The hotel was nearly empty when I arrived. It got a bit more busy after a week. Food and service was generally excellent. Everything worked well, reasonable internet, reliable power etc. The only annoyance was being approached by a prostitute one evening in the bar. That is not what I expect in a hotel of this standard.
