Stayed here for a few hours on a stop over with Ethiopian Airlines. Rooms comfortable, clean and food OK. Only here during the day evening courtesy of Ethiopian, free room, transport to and from Bole better than staying in terminal for 10 hours!

I realised on flight back to UK that I had left my wedding ring in the bathroom. Range the hotel just hoping they may have it. They did! Their staff clearly very honest. They took the ring to the airport to hand in to Ethiopian.

Was happy with stay, transport and facilities.

Our first stop in Ethiopia. Wasn't expecting much hotel-wise but figured the capital city would have decent lodging and services.
Let's start with the good: we were allowed to check-in at 8 am vs the official check-in time of 3 pm.
The rest:
The first room we were given had a whole wall covered with peeling paint from a leak, the safe didn't work and when we picked up the phone to complain, it didn't work either. The maid showed us another available room that seemed better. After we unpacked we found out the safe didn't work there either. Got it fixed "eventually". We also discovered the toilet didn't flush and got that fixed as well. The water in the shower never did get hot during our stay. At best it was lukewarm. And somehow got all over the floor no matter how we adjusted the shower curtain.
The Wi Fi worked erratically. Not at all on the main floor but more often in the restaurant tho still not reliable.
Front desk useless no matter what we needed. You'd think in Addis they could get some English speakers (or French, or Spanish, or German all of which I speak): nope. They couldn't even identify where we were on a map or give us directions to a street we knew was nearby but couldn't find. In sum, there is a resin this hotel is rated #55 of 69 hotel in Addis. I'd hate to see what is in the lower rankings…. Stay there at your own risk.

A very good, recently built hotel with hot water almost all the time (12 days in January 2012), good service and friendly staff.

We continuously walked around the hotel area both at daytime and during dark nights. The person talking about gangs probably did not go out at all but judged people on their looks. It is perfectly safe. We even walked in dark small side streets without a problem. Addis Ababa in general have pickpockets but armed robbery is almost unheard of. Actually the police head quarter is the neighbor of the hotel. People an Addis are kind and if you just go into a local place they will be happy that you came.
the only ones you want to kindly say you don't need their help are self appointed guides, mostly hanging around in the centre of the town. They will just ask you for money.
Please if you have children's clothes or adult clothes at home. Bring it and give it to the homeless people living around the cathedral a block away.

Across the street is a little local bar (pink house) that will serve 3 people food and tea/coffe for around 5-7 dollars total or less. As for shiro wat and you will get a vegetarian dish (all cooked into a stew-like dish) with injera. the hotels restaurant serves good food as well and with an excellent service. That service goes from cleaner to management. If you want a traditional experience then head around the block to the Addis Aba restaurant (visited both by tourists and locals - although i would prefer the pink bar across the street.

For both your but also for the staff's safety the staff are checked when going of their shifts. So if something disappeared you were either pick-pocketed somewhere in town or misplaced the item yourself. They also have free safes in the room, as well as wi-fi.

The hotel is in the old part of town, Piazza and you can easily take up a cab in the street. For 50-100 birr you can get anywhere in town. You can walk to Merkato (Africa's biggest market) in about 15-20 min and the same to Churchill street. To Bole are it is a 15-30 min cab ride depending on traffic. minibuses will take you for less than a dollar around to anywhere in town. One tricky part is that signs are in Amharic.
If you want that experience just jump into any mini bus where the person is yelling Piazza and you will just have a 5 minute walk to the hotel from there.

For general photos of our trip (with the base at Soramba hotel for 12 days) check out rastaphoto.com - They are all my photos.

Nice persons with a smile will receive the same from the staff at this place :-)

Maybe the shuttle can't come if it is in the middle of the night and the cab fare will be about 250 birr from the airport with a yellow taxi (about 15 dollars)

Enjoy

Me and my wife went to the mother land for two weeks. Anytime we are in Addis we always stayed at a place called Addis Regnncy, a great atmosphere with a fantastic customer service that makes you feel like your are in your childhood home but unfortunately we found out that they have been affected by the pandemic which leads them to rent it out there property for others. So that’s were our nightmare started, a mutual friend of us suggested a place called Soramba. We contacted them a head of our flight and reserved a room. Our flight landed in Addis around midnight so we were so tired and ready to go to bed. But when we opened our room what we found was nerve racking.
1. The room smelled really bad
2. Cockroaches on bedroom wall.
3. Cockroach in the floor
4. So noisy.
5. In the morning you don’t need an alarm the music from the Gym at 5th floor will definitely wake you up.
Above all I had thee worst hotel experience in my life with soramba

Am writing this so that you don’t get fooled like I did.
RUN AWAY from this hotel.

very low running water in the shower. the hotel is in a very dangerous neighborhood area. so many gang looking people around the area are ready to attack visitors. You will be risking yourself if you had to stay there. The bed is absolutely feels like made out of the plywood which is very uncomfortable, in some cases the room is very dirty. It is just not worth it to stay and you are not getting for what you paid for it.

It's like having the kitchen in your room--the horrible strong smell of food is in your room at all times. Located off a main busy road, you get the noise from the traffic and the non-stopping honking, let alone the exhaust from vehicles is sickening. The gym what? a total lie (it was an empty dusty space in the basement). Of course, it lacks swimming pool or any safe area to even stretch ones legs. The menu is limited and to top it off, they add MSG (aka Maggie) to all non-local dishes. Oh! they tricked you into failing to take your bags to their storage room so that they could charge (full rate) for the room. It was a total ordeal, I lost about 25 lbs during my 5 weeks there. It was one of my worst temporary-duty assignment ever.

In a city where the hotels range from the outrageously opulent sheraton to some suspect hostels, we chose the soramba for its average rates and middle of the road qualities. At around 50 pounds a night its not the cheapest but it is clean, well located and offers a free airport shuttle service which cannot be sniffed at (and saves you negotiating a taxi on arrival at the airport)

the reception staff were excellent as was the luggage room guy, and the room was clean , spacious with a balcony and free internet connection via ethernet cable. the complimentary honey flavoured condoms were a bizarre touch but this is Ethiopia so bizarre can be common.

the retsuarant was very reasonable for lunch/dinner but the breakfast service wasnt the best and could be described as odd. They seem to be able to provide certain items really quickly whilst other seemingly similar dishes take what seems like hours to produce!!

I would definitely stay here again , but i will say that i felt a bit let down when the doorman summoned a cab for us. The driver offered us a very overpriced fare and the doorman was insisting it was a good deal. it clearly wasnt but we ended getting in it anyway because we felt we had no other choice . i noticed that cabbie and his mates were constantly parked outside the hotel the next couple of days so i guess they have a nice deal going there.

Stuff you might want to do or see in Addis Ababa is pretty spread out so selecting a hotel by location is tricky, nowhere is perfect. The Soramba is a fairly new hotel just north of the Piazza area, close to St Georgis Cathedral.
The rooms are spacious fitted with good size, comfortable beds, firm pillows. All the furniture matches, though the silly little handles on wardrobe doors, drawers etc are breaking and not being replaced. As always in Ethiopia the devil is in the maintenance, or lack of it. Roms have flat screen TVs with 9 or 10 channels including BBC World and AlJazeera English and at least 1 movie channel.
The hotel has free internet by ethernet cable, not wifi. Most rooms seem to be equipped with the cable to connect to your computer, so you plug it in and away you go, reasonably quick too (for a country where the internet is at best slow and often non-existent).
Bathrooms have everything you might expect including hair dryers and shower curtains (not a given in Ethiopia) though the shower curtains have dolphins on a pink basckground! Water is heated by solar and is generally hot and plentiful.
The restaurant serves some reasonable food (try the Grilled Fish - English style) at reasonable prices and there is 24 hour room service (or so they say - I didn't test the 24 hour bit)
The staff are friendly and helpful.
In 3 stays over 2 weeks in between going to other places I was in 3 different rooms - all with views of the road, all satisfactory.
So all very good, yet....one evening before I was due to check out the next day reception phoned me at 10:15 pm to ask if I would pay the bill then as something was happening to the accounts system next day. Irritating. That, coupled with the lack of maintenance and the low-level of attention to detail (tile grouting in the bathrooms that wasn't cleaned off properly when the hotel was built and is still there now) just leads you to think it might slowly go downhill. I hope not. I would be happy to stay again - it is a lot better than most hotels in Ethiopia - some of which just make you shudder! Don't mention the Qualiber Hotel in Dessie in my presence!

The Soramba is a glorious new 50 room hotel furnished with smart Chinese-made fittings and features and with a well trained, diligent and friendly team of staff. What a pleasant and unexpected surprise after 3 weeks touring the Northern Circuit! There is Wi-Fi throughout the property: in the lobby lounge area, bar and in the rooms. The rooms are comfortable, with a small balcony, bath/shower, hair dryer and even a pair of slippers thoughtfully provided. Satellite TV pipes in many channels including BBC World, Aljazeera & a movie channel. In the basement is a separate Jacuzzi and Scandinavian sauna but both facilities are strictly single sex only, which irritated my wife and I!

A decent buffet breakfast with unlimited refills of delicious Ethiopian coffee is served between 6.30 am and 10.00 am in the first floor restaurant. Dinner menu items include pepper steak and Ethiopian sparkling wine. The bar is a very pleasant and relaxing place for a drink and the beers that they stock include Kakim, an interesting locally-brewed stout. Prices are very reasonable.

The location in the north-centre of the city near to St George’s church is an excellent one. It is 10 minutes walk to the Piazza area, making the hotel an ideal base for self-guided walking tours of the compact and pleasant downtown area of Addis Ababa.

The bed is ok, the shower is hot. The internet is not so good and works only one third of the time. The room is clean except for under the bed. The hotel is far away from the town. I spend a night jus for a connection from Brazil to Benin with Ethiopian Airlines and they chose the hotel for me.

There is not a desk or phone a the airport and I do not think they have a shuttle organised to the airport either. I think the best is to contact them and ask for a reliable taxi picking you at the airport. Alternatively I know that local tourist agencies organise also airport pick ups. You can find them just browsing
