Amazing location with a great view from the room. It's very peaceful there and in the morning the howler monkeys wake you up. The beach is very close to the hostel. We liked the fact that our cabana was 'open air', without glass on the window because we felt like we sleep in the middle of the nature which was fantastic. The room, bathrom and kitchen were very clean and the kitchen is very well equiped. The boy who worked there during our stay is very nice. He is there for you when you need him, otherwise he leaves you alone and he takes care that the buildings and sorounding are clean

We booked the bungalow for just one night and were so pleased with it! The view from the room is amazing and it is such a novelty to lay in bed with the sliding doors open, listening to the sounds of nature (we did shut them before we fell asleep as there are a lot of monkeys around). The common area was a great place to hang out and chat with other visitors -- we enjoyed a great discussion (in broken English and broken Spanish) with two Spaniards and a Dutch traveler). We came to the island for birding and were not disappointed! My name is Christina and it was a real novelty to swim at a beach with the same name :) Playa Christina is quite lovely and it was so cool to be the only one there! This island really is meant for relaxation --- there is not a lot to "do" but what is there is fantastic. If you like nature, hiking and kicking around, you will love this. Howler's Bay is not fancy, but it's simplicity is a huge part of its charm.

Very safe and clean
New structure
Price lower than the close hotel boca brava
Familiar atmosphere not commercial like the big hotel on the island
Super friendly staff
Many toys for our kid provided
1 min walking to the beach
Fantastic sunset relaxing in hammocks drinking a fresh beer.

Cons:
None

We stayes a few days in this hidden paradise runned from two German brothers Alex and Andy two really special guys who made our stay really unique ( best place in our two months trip) as they opened just two months ago they had no other guest so we where trated like a king and a queen, they pampered us totaly. During the meals we had also a private baby sitter for our 1 year old boy!!
The bungalow is fantastic with its huge panoramic window. Price really fair for just 65usd.
Sometimes it seemed us to be in a zoo we saw many: howler monkeys, wash bears iguanas all walking around free... it was so fascinating for us and our little boy.

The only way to reach the island is a boat taxi 2usd each. On the island there is no road only paths. There are two beaches. One very close the other 15min away Both really quiet, we had the whole beach for ourselves. Amazing how relaxing.
Very nice walks discovering the many paths on the island.

Thank you Andy and Alex, if all our hosts wold have been like you guys... they should learn from you!

I stayed 5 days with my own tent (12 usd.). The property is on top of a hill with nice view to the sea and other nearby small islands, from the pier you'll climb 150 stairs. There are only two bungalows (35 and 60 usd.), two normal tents, not luxury, but with mattress, bedsheets and fan for double occupancy (20-22 usd.) and one very small tent for single occupancy (15 usd.). Note that the picture of the luxury tent that you find on internet is out of date. Wifi working fine. You need to bring all your food for the length of your stay and cook it in the nice big and well equipped kitchen (big fridge, salt and sugar are provided, tap water is safe); pls note that hotel Boca Brava nearby does not sell any meal for outside guests. Biers (1.75 usd.) and small water bottles (1.25 usd.) can be purchased. Two showers and one toilet are always kept very clean. From the big terrace you can spot howler monkeys, iguana, parrots and in the night rakoon. Two small beaches are 5-10 minutes away. During my stay we were between 4 to 7 tourists every night, what a quiet vacation - highly recommended ! There are no cars on this side of the island and a path through the jungle links the fifteen or so houses (all owned by foreigners) in half an hour. You can also explore the other side of the island, bigger and with ranches, by climbing over a fence past the water tanks.

A great start to our trip! Thank you Sebastian and Betty. We stayed in the bungalow with an amazing view of the water and monkeys. The bed was really comfortable and we loved the hammock. We chose to have food included and it was great. There really is nothing on the Island so I would recommend bringing water with you of nothing else. There are beaches close by too with great swimming. A beautiful place to do nothing! We couldn't have been looked after better and they even helped us out with out trip to Boquete the next day.
Only negative was that we had to wait 3 or 4 hours before we could check in as they had gone to the city to pick up some things (not too bad as we went tot he beach). And we were a day late due to flight issues so cant complain too much!
Thanks so much and if we ever come close by again we would definitely come back!

We confed the booking of a cabin and when we got there it wasn't availble and we had to sleep in a tent with a bad smelling matress. Even thought the views were nice, it didn't balance out the dirt in the place, specially in the kitchen.
Also wifi didn't work.

One of the most gorgeous peaceful places I've been to panama. A friend and I camped for 1 night, woke up to monkeys in the trees right above our tent and the sounds of exotic birds chirping. The area is vibrant with life! We were also accommodated with mattress/bedding and have never slept better! With Colin as our host we couldn't have chose a better place to stay. If you enjoy nature and being away from the city, I recommend coming to howlers bay!

The place is pretty basic but very much connected to nature and this is exactly why me and my uncle enjoyed it a lot. If you are a lady wearing high heels and are looking for a 5* star hotel with room service, this is not a place for you. But if you are person who does not mind climbing 100+ stairs to get up the hill, cooking basic meals on your own, and living in the middle of nature, then you just must visit this place!
The view from the terrace of the cabin is just "wow" - we spent hours in the hammock enjoying the view. You can expect a visit from howler monkeys or racoons but that will make the stay feel more like "back to the roots". One small beach is located 5min walking down the hill and offers a decent swim but is nothing special (this is why I am not giving 5* for the review). For snorkeling you need to arrange for a boat trip to one of the surrounding islands.
The owner (Kent) of the place is very friendly and trying to be helpful. He will let you enjoy the place but if you need something, he is always there. I can very much recommend this place for backpackers or young couples who want to spend a few peaceful days in one of the most beautiful natural parks in Panama. You pay mainly for the location and view but it is absolutely worth it!

Amazing place, beautiful views and surroundings, tons of wild life. We saw more wild animals during our 1 night stay here than we did all other places we stayed at in Panama combined. The bungalow is lovely and well worth the price. The island is great for hikes and as a starting point to explore the archipelago. There are also good beaches near the property.

We really enjoyed the stay very much, the man in charge JAIME really put a lot of effort to cater for the needs. (Cooking food- basic but tasteful)
I was a bit disappointed by the owner's "attitude" that even after having asked me not to use booking.com and keep the commission, that he charged more than booking would + I had asked for an additional mattress for a 3rd person (cottage) which he didn't say he would charge for.
That makes him a bit "unpredictable" and gave a bit of sour taste about the stay.

Being as it was, life goes on, the location of especially the cottage I rented and the social area is beautiful. Great views and we had great dry season weather. The mattress was used to stay on the deck of the cottage until late night to enjoy the outdoor. What a view and what a place

Once again, thanks to JAIME we had food, the website (nor via phone) isn't clear enough that food isn't available and that you should bring your own. So if you get there rather empty handed renting a cottage expecting food: make sure you that you confirm JAIME is around.

Also don't forget to tip him off, he is really trying to give you a good time (which isn't hard if you don't get too altered by the above details, I didn't but still feel it needs to be said)

Hopefully the owner reads these reviews too : he can learn from his costumers before they turn their backs on him... :-)

can you give me directions, we made reservations but i can't find how to get there

Hi, you need to get to Boca Chica. From there you take a water taxi to Boca Brava. The water taxi costs 3 dollars per person. To get to Boca Chica either go by car or take a bus from David and ask them to let you off at the crossing of Highway 1 and road 407 (it's explained in the Lonely Planet). From there you can catch a bus to Boca Chica.
