Nestled in a secluded location that many guests cherish for its tranquility and natural surroundings, the Ion Adventure Hotel offers a serene escape with some travelers enjoying the stylish comfort it provides. While reviews highlight the warm service received, concerns are occasionally raised about the night staff's professionalism. The outdoor hot pool and sauna are popular among guests, despite some finding the spa offerings limited.
Opinions on the rooms vary, with criticisms focused on their size and upkeep. Cleanliness is consistently praised, but some question the value considering the pricing.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed at the Ion hotel at end of January for 2 nights. We loved the location and views of the wilderness from the hotel, it should have been a great place to stay but unfortunately a few things let it down.
The rooms are quite comfortable but bathroom was tiny, and the pillows on the beds inadequate. It was the food and the patchy service that lets this place down. Some of the service was verging on rude (especially the barman in Northern Lights bar who evidently couldn’t be bothered). Reception staff were a mixed bag too with 2 very helpful/ friendly people and 1 who wasn’t.
The breakfast was very poor in terms of quality and selection. No chopped fresh fruit but provided with a fruit bowl (varying contents), a knife and chopping board! The “hot” items were cold and not much selection. It was also very chaotic and badly managed.
Evening meals were mixed, one night was decent but the other was mediocre.
It’s a shame as it’s a nice property which just needs to show its guests that it cares and wants you to have a great trip.
We had excellent views of the Northern Lights so from that perspective we were very lucky!

The hot springs and sauna were nice. Room was very small and pictures can be deceiving. It was great to be outside in the hot spring. Didn't see the northern lights but the staff was kind enough to offer to wake us up if they came out. I booked with Marriott point and thought that I was getting a double room but when I got there I was "upgraded" to a room with two twin beds and ask to have the third person with us to pay $70 extra for bathrobe and towel.

Improvements to make: info folders in rooms. We didnt find out there was a gym until we saw it by accident in last day. We didnt know they did lunches until we asked. We had an email confirming we had twin beds the arrived to find it was made up as double - was then rectified but at these prices this simple stuff shouldn't be missed. Breakfast was good and the restaurant for lunch and evenings excellent. Lunch and evening service staff great. Breakfast guy is in the wrong job . A full list of nearby activities and things to do in the room would be good . V helpful reception staff though who answered any questions. Fresh squeezed juice at breakfast would be good . Most important- the website should specify at sale point that there are rooms with valley views and factory views. Put then at different prices the people can choose and are fully informed. We were very unhappy with the view of a huge geothermal factory. Would happily pay more to be on the other side. Amazing bar. Nice long outdoor hot tub but please put some hooks up for towels and dressing gowns! You have to leave them on the wet icy decking. The water and glasses needs to be checked and replenished more often in the Spa too. Overall a good experience just address the small points .

I have always wanted to go there but at the prices they were charging, I never went until now. We were very pleased with this hotel for the price we paid, it would have been a different matter if I had been paying full price. Rooms were very stylish and modern and clean. We stayed in the luxury ones so we got great views and a few extras it seems like a mini bar with a few complementary items, a beer, coke and water. The toiletries were lovely, from Soley an Icelandic firm. The beds were very comfy and we got a wonderful sleep. There is a very nice hot pot that we really enjoyed, I see some people here confuse it with a swimming pool but it it not and is not advertised as such. It was a good hot temperature and we relaxed in the sauna and relaxation room afterwards and then on to dinner. Right now they only have a set menu but they do offer choices and we all very much enjoyed our dinner, everyone was happy and the service was wonderful. We hit the honesty bar after that, wonderful views and very funky and cool decor. You serve yourself and jot down what you drink and I very much hope people do that unlike the lady in front of me who poured a large water glass full of red wine and then left. :( . Breakfast was large and varied, a buffet style serving and everyone had to use gloves and sanitizer so it all felt safe. The location itself is stunning in good weather, even if we are from here, we loved the views. Service all around was great and friendly.

The rooms were nice. The bed was huge & comfortable. Champagne upon arrival was pleasant. The design is beautiful & modern, and the hotel looks good. Slippers & robe a nice touch in the rooms.
HOWEVER...The hot tub was not hot, it was luke warm. The sauna was tiny. The hotel does not mention being right next door to a geothermal power station, creating an overwhelming smell of sulphur, especially in the water in our room (107) when we used our shower. They also do not mention until you have already booked that it is difficult to get to. We were okay as we had a 4x4 but had we been in a smaller 2WD car we would’ve struggled on the road. There is one vegan/veggie option on the menu which is ridiculously overpriced anyway so we didn’t bother because we had luckily brought food with us to try keep ourselves alive as there is nothing nearby to find an alternative. Check the menu before you go & make sure you don’t starve! We didn’t even bother with breakfast because at a ‘luxury’ hotel like this you expect to have it included, not for 2900 krona per person. One of the receptionists kept calling me Sir too, after she looked at my ID, which said Emily. I appreciate I have short hair but I definitely do not look male! I thought this was very rude & strange. Our bedroom windows also got extremely fogged up, not that it mattered as we had a rubbish view anyway. This left a puddle dripping down off our window sill in the morning. I have included a photo of this. Not what you expect for £250 per night.

40 mins from Reykjavik. you feel the magic of Icelandic nature all around. The glass bar is magnificent, the view from the bedroom, the wonderful spa where we drank champagne under the light of the midnight sun.
The reception staff are very welcoming and professional. We met a very nice chap called Palvi who could not be more pleasant and helpful.
The assistant manager Siri is really lovely with a seemingly endless supply of patience for all our tourist questions.
If you want a truly authentic Icelandic experience and luxurious in the sense that the hotel is careful with the environment this is a must.
The toiletries are all natural in refillable containers and I saw no plastic bags.
The restaurant food is locally sourced and delicious.
Thank you Ion 5 star

There were a few positives... The reception was always nice and while trying to get there, they talked us through it when we were lost. The bartender with redhair, a beard and does body building, made the best drinks I have ever had!!! He gave us so much information about the local area and we very much enjoyed him! He even made us feel better about the view of the power plant when we thought we were going into the middle of nowhere.
We stayed here for the northern lights and signed up for a notification call if they became visible. We did miss seeing them because the staff did not call us or other guest when they appeared. We later found out that the yelling from the pool came because of the northern lights being visible and not just guest having a good time. If they are not going to notify us, don’t give us the option because we trust them and allow ourselves to let down our watching eyes.
Food was not done well. Our lunch had a burger missing the bacon, the dinner the first night was tough brisket and over done lamb. The second night we shared a brisket and stated we didn’t want it overcooked so it was tender but they were out of the sauce and parts of the meat weren’t warm.
We did have housekeeping issues but the front staff more than made up for it so I won’t mention those issues.
Overall the maintenance is poor. Broken glass lanterns in the stairwell and our light bulb was out.
This is a “design” hotel yet there were no thoughts in designing the landscape. From the dining room you have views of satellite dishes where they could have been placed on the roof or moved out of view and trees could be planted to hide the power plant.
The last night the bartender left 20m early because of a storm but told nobody he was leaving and left us waiting for beverages. The other guest stated he was impolite and it appeared he hated being there. At three minutes past 11 we called the front deck because is was closing time, they confirmed he had left and they brought us two glasses to bad champagne that cost more that two fabulous beverages before. When we complained the staff stated the bartender left right before 11 and the bottle was freshly open. Both I strongly disagree with.
I suggest passing on the ion and staying in town. Take a tour to see the northern lights!

We were deeply disappointed by the service and amenities we received given the price tag. We arrived and had to ask for hand soap. They charge you $30 if you want to have body lotion and the spa area was overwhelmingly disappointing. They advertise an outdoor hot tub that is in reality kept at a Luke warm temperature at best. Overall the service was mediocre and the food was insanely expensive, especially given it was the only option as the hotel is so remote. Granted, the food was high quality and delicious. However, given that the restaurant is so pricey, they should at least offer snacks or bar food for purchase as an alternative. No one at the hotel seemed particularly interested in ensuring guests have a positive experience.
Additionally, it is unclear why it is called an adventure hotel as they do not offer anything other than overpriced tours booked through the website.
Further, do not book any tours or adventures through the hotel as it is an absolute scam. They charge 4x more than comparable tours and the hotel does not help whatsoever if you have issues with the adventure/tour you book through them. We left feeling very taken advantage of and disappointed. We will not be returning to Ion.

Stayed for 2 nights in March 2020. The hotel is super, it blends right into the landscape (even though the landscape was covered in snow when we were there). We were a little concerned about getting there (some of the roads in between were marked as impassable on Road.IS, but by the time we got there, we made it through with no problem (we were coming up from Selfoss). Despite the seeming remoteness, it is really a quick drive to alot of places (Pingvellir, South Coast, Gullfoss, Langjokull). The room was a little small and the bathroom even smaller, but I didn't stay here to hang out in the room. There is the Northern Lights Bar, which during the day is like a big living room with couches and chairs to hang out in. And if your into social media and looking for some hate-likes, there can be no better pic than hanging out in the thermal pool while it's snowing. The pool and sauna were great and sitting in the pool looking over the landscape during a snow storm was phenomenal. I could have spent days in that pool. The restaurant served great food. Though the menu was limited, we were there for 2 days, more than 3 and I think the menu would have gotten old as there are limited appetizers/entrees (though they may rotate more in the Summer). The only thing that would have been better is if we had gotten some northern lights during our stay. We also stayed at the Ion City hotel in Rekjavik and that was a great stay as well.

Me and my wife were interested to try a hotel close to the capital city for relaxation. ION hotel was an exciting choice for us.
After two nights we can say few things about our stay.
This hotel is quite expensive but what do you get for your money?
You are in the middle of nowhere. There is about 40min drive to the next town or city but in summer time (between May to October) you drive through an amazing landscape close to the hotel. That road is closed during winter due to snow.
Room was average with a good bed. The ventilation could be better, if you use the shower in your room you need to have the window open, otherwise room will be filled by steam.
Restaurant is wonderful, a simple menu with high quality cooked meat or fish of the day. The deserts were also delicious.
The service was wonderful, and the sevice from the Romanian waiter at the restaurant outstanding.
A few kilometers from the hotel is the 2nd largest geothermal power station in Iceland. They make an electricity and hot water for usage in Reykjavik, all made from hot steam coming from below ground. It does make the air smell off sulfur though.
If you really want to relax in a beautiful and quite place within one hours drive from Reykjavik this is hotel for you.

I am not staff but when I was there recently it was around 15-20 pounds if I remember correctly, depending on what we got.
You may need to contact the hotel concierge. It's a small property. My room was smaller with a king bed.
I don’t know. But I feel like when I did research the hotels they might have had rooms with three beds which is common in European hotels.
Ion serves a buffet breakfast that's around $25 per person. They also serve lunch. It was about a 2 hour drive to Vik, there are 2 major waterfalls to see on the way, a geothermal pool, interesting basalt cliffs and the abandoned plane. So will likely take more than 2 hours. We stayed at the Volcano Hotel in Vik and they organized a great glacier tour in a Super Truck. We walked through ice caves and had a great time with our driver Ingo.
Driving in Iceland is always difficult, specially in the winter time. You need to check the road condition before you start you engine. Their is a very useful website for that ‘road.is’ which will tell you everything you need to know on the real time road condition.
"Bring snacks and cocktails for the room. Not a lot of options. But great venue. Just realize you are in a remote location."Read full review
