Arrived about 4pm to an empty bar where we were greeted by a young man, took a long time to get to our room as he stated he doesn't usually deal with bookings. After being given the key and told we were on the top floor up 3 flights of stairs which do not feel safe we opened the door to find a double bed barely capable of fitting in the room. I cant begin to describe how small the room was and falling apart much like the rest of the building. There is no air-conditioning and but a small fan incapable of cooling the room! The floor was dirty as were inside the bedside drawers, a bar fridge was located in the corner of the room on the floor and was on a lean as it appeared broken. Our package included a main and dessert , they were kind enough to swap the dessert for entree as neither of us eat sweets. The steak was cooked well but completely un-seasoned and Calamari was so thick it was chewy and the coating inedible! We left within 2hrs of arriving giving back our key stating we wouldn't be staying, the manager offered no resolve or apology and seemed not to care at the slightest. We ended up going home and getting takeaways, a much better way of spending our money. Reviews on here show the same generic replies, we don't offer air-con etc no apology whatsoever - stay clear…
Befire returning home, I stayed in the Shakespeare for little under a week. After hopping from hostels and travel tours for the last month it was a complete relief to have my own room! As well as having the space and comfort I was needing, the room was comfortable. Temperature was fine and I didn’t need the air con on the whole time. The service was wonderful and the staff where fantastic. The food and ale was great and overall I greatly enjoyed my stay! I can not recommend them enough! There was little bit of construction noise but only a little and I would of of expected any different for being in the centre of a city with so much going on!!! Overall 5 stars for me!
Had a few drinks and the rib special, food was great, atmosphere was excellent for a Monday night, recommend for a great pub experience in downtown Auckland. Would go again for sure , very enjoyable indeed.
Everything they post on different sites conflict and is mostly wrong. Staff is onsite from 11am-12am max. The rooms are tiny and boiling, at least 5degrees hotter than putside temp. The staff were nice but the place is horrible. We got there around 4pm, walked up a ridiculous amount of stairs (no lift) to our room which was not made up and they gave us the wrong room. We finally got them to change us to a different room and it still didn't get better. There is major construction opposite so there was no peace during the day. The smoke from the pub goes straight up and directly into your bedroom. The WiFi is intermittent at best. Horrible place to stay.
Lovely old English style pub. A great atmosphere with very friendly staff, food was great. Stayed prior going on a cruise and on return, comfortable rooms. Will be staying again in April. Staff are very obliging to assist with your needs.
