We stayed at the Emu walk self contained apartments. We found it to be surprisingly good; better than what we expected. We carried some food with us and the self contained kitchen was a great convenience. Make sure you carry your own booze with you as there is no bottle shop there.

Be aware that there are currently restrictions in place in the NT at Yulara. This means there are fewer businesses open and fewer things to do. Also, it is stinking hot in March and the flies are very bad ... and the whole Big Rock in the desert thing is a tad over-rated ... IMHO. If you’ve seen it in a photo, there’s no need to go there. What you see in a photo is what you get. A BIG ROCK! But if you do go, and you like self-catering, the apartments are basically OK, but they’re certainly nothing special. They have a ‘been-there-done-that’ feel to them. Check-in was very slow: only one lady was on duty at rush hour (which is pretty much an hour after a plane lands). As there were two work stations in Reception, couldn’t someone from Housekeeping come assist with check-in? We had to wait 25 minutes for our keys. There should have been two people, or if only one, couldn’t they supply a soft drink while one waited? The apartment was not too bad, but these things can be improved upon: Soft furnishings (e.g. the fabric-covered couch) were noticeably grubby. Kitchen equipment was scarce; no basic sharp knife at all to cut bread or slice a tomato or slice of meat, for example. No condiments provided. Often in furnished apartments some basics like salt, pepper and cooking oil are supplied. The shower did not drain properly because it had not been tiled at the right angle in the first place, so there was always a big pool of dirty, cold water leftover from the previous shower that we had to step into. There is only a small bar fridge. The tiny freezer space would not accommodate a tub of ice-cream and would probably not be cold enough as the ‘freezer part’ is within the ‘fridge part’. There was no ice-block tray, so we couldn’t make ice cubes. The fridge had not been emptied or cleaned after the previous guest. There was a half-consumed salami stick in it, unwrapped. A negative, not specific to Emu Walk, is that the ONLY place you can buy a bottle of wine to have with your dinner (we like to self-cater which is why we booked a furnished apartment) is at the Sails in the Desert Hotel, ten minutes walk away, at a starting price of $52 for a cheap De Bortoli Sauvignon Blanc, which in a city would cost less than $10 at a bottle shop. And then you HAVE to drink it AT the Sails in the Desert hotel; you cannot take it to your apartment to have with your own home-cooked meal. The waiter we had was really impolite and officious. He insisted on opening a bottle of beer that we had bought at the poolside bar at 4pm and pouring it into a plastic cup, when politely we asked him not to do so. ‘Just give us the bottle to take with us!’ We pleaded. My husband wanted to drink his Heineken later at 6pm, after a work conference call, and so he ended up having flat, Luke-warm beer, later, much of which had spilled when we struggled to carry it without spilling (disguised under a towel). Come on! We are not underage schoolies! We are tourists who are pouring money into the Territory and want to enjoy ourselves as responsible adults. Yulara is not an Aboriginal reserve, where there are restrictions to help prevent alcohol dependency; it is a tourist town. Tourists deserve creature comforts as they are paying above the norm, certainly, when going to this place in the middle of the country.

The accommodation is of a very high standard. We had a one bedroom apartment in the Emu Walks self-contained apartments and it has everything needed for a very comfortable three-night stay. It was tastefully decorated and furnished with quality furniture, had central air conditioning that worked quietly and kept the room at a pleasant temperature along with a very comfortable king-sized bed. The low season 40% discount made it even more attractive.

Stayed at Emu Walk Apartments recently with my wife and 2 yr old son in a one bedroom apartment with full kitchenette. The room was big, clean and had everything we could need. Good size that my son could play around with his toys. We had the air conditioner on all the time as the temp hit 37° outside during the day and didn’t drop below 21° during the nights. The reception desk staff were polite, friendly and always willing to offer good suggestions for things to do for us. Once closed for the night, if you did need anything from reception your were put through to Desert Sands Hotel instead - but they’re connected to each other anyway. A good incentive was the $10 off your food and beverage bill if you put the door hang tag on your handle outside your door if you opted not to have your room made up each day. Within short walking distance to the town square and Desert Sands Hotel to eat at their restaurants and swim in their pool. Good hotel to stay at for a short time frame.

Airport transfers are free. This apartment is centrally located. Town centre, restaurants, shops, tour operators and IGA supermarket are on the outer edge of the apartment boundary. Our one bedroom apartment was spacious and had a safe in the living area. The kitchen was large with a washing machine and dryer in one of the cupboards. There was a large inverter microwave, bar fridge with small freezer, 4 hotplate stove but the only thing missing was an oven and dishwasher. There was a Tv in the living room as well as the bedroom, 2 couches in the living area, a large dining table and six chairs in the dining room. The bathroom was large and plenty of linen and bath essentials provided. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the apartment was serviced daily. We developed a good rapport with the maintenance staff. Our toilet would not flush when we first got to the apartment. On the third day the front door would not latch at 4;30am when we were going on our tour. When it finally locked we found out that housekeeping could not get in to service the apartment. We contacted housekeeping and when they showed up we could not access the patio as the door was stuck. Maintenance found a lizard jammed in the door frame and then had to replace the wheels on the sliding door to get it to work. Apart from these minor inconveniences we had an excellent stay.
