This is a beautiful hotel in a renovated section of an extraordinary monetary. The rooms are gorgeous — comfortable, modern furniture in light wood is a nice contrast to the old framework of the building. The bathroom shower is wonderful: great water pressure.

The hotel restaurant is simply excellent. We went there both nights of our stay. The kitchen is managed by an intelligent chef who understands flavors. Also: try the house wine, it is exceptional. Our waiter urged us to try it, and he was absolutely correct. Also, the wait staff in the hotel were wonderful.

Alcobaça is a wonderful location and an easy drive to some great sites in the area: Nazare, Batalha, Tomar, etc. The hotel is a nice place to base explorations and tours of the area.

Some room for improvement:

Check-in was protracted and unprofessional. At a minimum, the front desk should know which credit cards are accepted at the hotel. Also, it is safe to assume that most foreign travelers are coming for the monetary and local sites. Having some basic facts about the area available would have been useful.

As good as the dining room was, breakfast was a nightmare. In large part perhaps because there were so few guests that the hotel cut back their service. If that is the case, cut the hotel rate for the guests as well. The breakfast waiter one morning was well intentioned, but the second morning, the woman working had decided not to put out many food options and said no to our requests for juice. (We subsequently found someone who brought us juice). It was not consistent with a five star hotel.

Lastly, the coffee is simply terrible. The best option you can hope for is pods as their automated machine had a slightly fungal flavor.

Wonderful location just arrived the back side of the monastary, which is really the only reason to visit Alcobaça. We were not able to check in right away but the staff was kind and helpful. The facility has been renovated and is very modern, which is not usually my style, but it's done in a very tasteful manner. Perhaps the nicest part was the beautifully designed pool with perfect water temperature ... I could have spent an entire afternoon there. The rooms are spacious and offer most modern conveniences. The beds were large and comfortable. I felt the price was a bit high, but they really delivered with breakfast ... one of the best breakfast buffets I've had in a long while with tremendous variety and excellent quality offerings. Overall, a very pleasant experience.

A beautiful building, but unfortunately the furnishings and service lacked sophistication.
It is worth spending one night at the hotel, especially if you find an off-season price reduction, but stay clear of the restaurant! For a 5 star hotel, our dinning experience was below mediocre. The restaurant lacks ambiance: too bright and uncomfortable cafeteria-style chairs. Limited menu availability; they ran out of bread and did not have any of the wines we chose from their wine list. Our food arrived lukewarm, the spaghetti was overcooked and the shrimp did not taste fresh.
Breakfast was good and the (only) girl serving/clearing tables/greeting guests was amazing!!!

We went to dinner last Saturday at the hotel restaurant.

What a poor experience, in relation to the space and the price you pay.

The room is beautiful, but without ambient music, for a more pleasant experience.

For starters: rice black pudding; creme brulee and mushroom salad.

Warm food, normal black pudding, satisfying mushroom salad and tasty creme brulee.

For dishes, we ordered 3 goat rice and chicken leg in a fake púcara.

The chicken was normal. The goat rice was tasty, but only with 3 pieces of goat and lots of chestnuts. Shameful.

Head of room absent, to coordinate the service. We ordered wine, and the first two choices didn't have it. We asked them to tell us which ones they had, but not in the Bairrada area. And didn't they present us with two Bairrada wines?

There was a time when the tables wanted service, but there were simply no staff in the room for at least 5 minutes. Totally abandoned staff.

Honestly, for the price paid, it doesn't fit with the location and the service provided.

If they continue like this, they won't go far.

We walked around the hotel, and there was not a soul in the staff to be seen.

Excellent place, beautiful, but the staff lacks a lot of training, and there is a lack of staff numbers.

Hotel very well located to visit the heritage of Alcobaça. Although it is recent, it has an identity of great quality, partly by the design of the architects Siza Vieira and Souto Moura, who manage to provide a contemporary journey to the past, partly by the excellent professionals who welcome us and accompany us discreetly but guarantee an experience of permanent comfort. Staying in this hotel is a guarantee of escape without the desire to return abroad. As examples, the full breakfast , the pool, the restaurant, the rooms, all contribute to an experience that we want to repeat quickly, whether summer or winter.

A Disappointing 5-Star Experience at Montebello Hotel

We arrived at the Montebello hotel with high expectations, eager to indulge in a luxurious 5-star experience. Unfortunately, the reality fell far short of the promise.
The Good

The architecture is truly breathtaking, particularly the grand hallways leading to the rooms.
The rooms, while sparsely furnished, are functional and comfortable.

The Disappointing
Ambiance and Decor

The hotel's interior design fails to match its architectural splendor.
The entire property is furnished with just three repetitive pieces: a standard cloth chair, an IKEA-esque pine table, and the occasional bench.
This minimalist approach strips away any sense of character, making the hotel feel more institutional than luxurious.
The beautiful courtyard, despite its impressive scale, is poorly maintained and filled with gravel, missing an opportunity to create a stunning outdoor space.

Check-in Experience

The reception process lacks the warmth and attentiveness expected of a 5-star establishment.

Spa Experience

Guests are required to purchase a 5 euro swimming cap, an unexpected and petty charge for a high-end hotel.
The management's strict and inflexible policy regarding spa robes left us feeling unwelcome and out of place.
We were reprimanded for wearing spa robes to the hotel bar, then redirected to drink in a corridor, creating an awkward and unpleasant experience.

Conclusion
While we did enjoy aspects of our stay, the Montebello hotel falls significantly short of the 5-star experience it promises. The stunning architecture provides an excellent foundation, but the hotel fails to capitalize on this potential. From the sparse, repetitive furnishings to the inflexible policies and lack of attention to detail, the overall experience feels more like a missed opportunity than a luxury retreat.
To truly earn its 5-star rating, the Montebello needs to significantly improve its interior design, guest policies, and overall attention to creating a warm, welcoming, and truly luxurious atmosphere that matches the grandeur of its architecture.

I was at this hotel in March 2023, I came back 8 months later.
The staff are attentive and professional.
Despite the movement, caused by the 25th International Conventual Sweets and Liqueurs Exhibition, the soundproofing worked well inside the rooms.
The stay went, as before, very well.

One of the best places I've ever visited. Beautiful, fantastic atmosphere, a pool of the Gods, great breakfast, fantastic restaurant, huge room with all the amenities. The only drawback is the bar where you pay almost as much for a meal consisting of hamburgers as in the 5-star restaurant next door, with impeccable service and a fabulous dinner prepared by a chef.

The hotel is very minimalist in its design, but that didn't bother us. The rooms are spacious with a very large bathroom and an excellent rain shower. The beds weren't too soft or too hard; we slept like a dream. Unfortunately, you couldn't have breakfast outside in the courtyard, which would have been a dream considering the wonderful weather. We made trips to Fatima and Nazare from the hotel.
