New Place Hotel offers a stay that has garnered mixed reviews from its guests. While the hotel's atmosphere and cleanliness are frequently praised, many visitors feel that the cost of their stay doesn't align with the value received, pointing out pricey bar items and room features that seem lackluster.
Although the pet-friendly amenities and comfortable beds are a hit among travelers, some suggest that a refresh in decor and more attentive service would greatly enhance the overall experience. Critics often call attention to the need for better room maintenance to elevate the sense of cleanliness and comfort.

Read all the reviews before visiting. Had a great stay. Read about the basic rooms. They have everything we needed good bed ,clean bathroom , tea and coffee (bottle of water might have been good but hey the water from the tap is drinkable) Noted complaints about lack of drawers! There are shelves in the wardrobe!! Would say though a shelf in the bathroom would be good but made do with the shower chair. Breakfast now served in dining room couldn’t really complain perfect poached eggs black pudding also added on Sunday. Toast was soggy (Minor point)think they probably stack them rather than standing after toasting was able to ask for jam. Had noted comment about small portions for dinner after 3 courses absolutely full so no complaints there. Also noted several comments about tough steaks(did avoid) but think the problem may not be the meat as it would mean even the broccoli is tough I would suggest it’s the cutlery is very blunt . Had no problems with either the pork or chicken when eating but cutting was difficult. We had booked with Great little escapes £9 dearer than secret escapes but includes 3 courses and a lovely bottle of Prosecco. Hotel VERY Covid aware could suggest some seats under the outside waiting area for reception as can be a long wait but may not be permissible. Had booked for our wedding anniversary was presented with a special plate at dinner. For me was a little disappointed though on the night not very romantic as put in the brighter room with piped pop music for me it wasn’t at all romantic when the hotel sells itself as a romantic get away. However we didn’t pay 4/5* prices we paid Gt little escape/Secret escape prices therefore have to balance this with value for money and would still recommend a stay. Noted complaints about getting wet going to dinning room hey that’s what researching before hand prevents , took a brolly. I didn’t like the bar for me it’s just brown no colour some modern out of place lights. Just had new painting a brown portrait , has beige curtains , beige furniture. lights over the paintings rather than on the ceiling would give some ambience Didn’t feel cosy/welcoming but that’s my opinion My husband didn’t agree. It was clean. However service very pleasant. Forgot to mention as no checkout due to Covid that shower heads could do with some attention although working the rain shower only worked through some holes and the lower shower head leaked out from the join. Would go again though.

We stayed here for the last night of our West Country road trip on our way home. We booked it via Secret Escapes and were treating ourselves with a ‘nice’ hotel. The building is beautiful, plenty of free parking and they dealt with the COVID restrictions sensitively and effectively. Staff are lovely and helpful under difficult circumstances The deal included a bottle of Prosecco, breakfast and 2 course dinner and the food was lovely and served in all of their available dining rooms to ensure adequate distancing. Breakfast times had to be booked in advance and cereal and yoghurt etc was selected before you sat down. There was only a full English breakfast on offer as a hot option so no alternatives were available which was a bit of a surprise but the food was plentiful and nicely prepared. The reason for 4 stars was the room. We were housed in the ‘motel-style’ rooms in low blocks outside the main hotel building which was a real disappointment. The rooms looked like conference accommodation basic but functional. They were spacious and clean but lacking in any character or even any interesting decor or colour - just bland. The good thing is that there was an iron and ironing board (necessary after a week of living out of a suitcase!) a kettle and teas and coffees and a hairdryer and towels so not all bad but no bottled water which seems to be the norm even in b&bs. The room was soulless and that was a bit of a shocker after the beauty of the hotel and grounds. Not awful at all - just not what we had expected. Perfectly adequate but not exceptional. As long as you know that beforehand you won’t be disappointed.

Experience: Our experience was a very pleasant one, from being greeted by the lovely girls to each and every waiter/bar staff, everyone was polite/professional/helpful and friendy.
Room - our room was one of the bungalow types which are very modern with everything you would want in the room, tea and coffee facilities are available, some reviews said these were missing so maybe this has been added recently which means this hotel listens to its customers. You have a hairdryer/iron/safe/shampoo and soap (some people moaned about how small the shampoo was (what do you expect, its enough for each night (and they replenish daily), bring your own if your bothered). Only thing missing for me was a packet of biscuits (didnt really need it but just fancied one with my tea).
Location; set in a beautiful woodland area, we didn't do much walking because friends of ours were not very mobile but the grounds are stunning, tennis court and croquet I am guessing up and running in the summer, there is a good size gym and swimming pool and jucuzzi is a decent size too, you need to get towels from reception and they give you a code to get in. Its quite difficult to find, sign posting could be better but found it in the end!
Dinner on first night was quite good, well presented, hot and tasty, not an awful lot of choice. We had after dinner drinks in bar, not many people were in the bar but we had a few then went back to our room, to me it lacked atmosphere / ok if you are with friends, would be nice if the fires were put on as the hotel is quite cold, my advice take a woolly when you go for dinner. We decided to eat out on 2nd night just because there isnt much to do here after a meal. Please go to The Black Dog, 5 mins up the road (take a cab, you cannot walk!), its a lovely little pub, fabulous food, great atmosphere.
All in all a very nice stay at this hotel, and DOG FRIENDLY! although we only saw 2 dogs.

Me and my Husband decided to take a trip away to celebrate his lockdown birthday. Well New Place certainly did not disappoint. Check in was a breeze. Lovely little area to wait to check in before being called to the desk and hand sanitising point directly before you walk in. We choose our dinner time and breakfast time at check in. Tea and coffee and toiletries were given in individual paper bags rather than being left in the room which is a lovely idea. Room was lovely and clean and very modern after the refit.
We then sat on the terrace and had a drink enjoying the sunshine. There's plenty of seating avaliable around the manor house and gardens and all are spaced out well. A lovely waitress came and took our drink order and brought them back out to us and it was charged directly to our room so no faffing having to pay separately. Dinner in the restaurant was superb. Food was delicious and all brought out well presented. Had a lovely night sleep as was very quiet in our room. Breakfast was again well laid out lots of space in between tables and staff wearing correct PPE.
Cannot fault our stay at New Place. All staff went above and beyond and are still smiling even through this difficult time! Felt New Place have got the correct safety standards in place without compromising their amazing service.
Would definitely recommend and will be back soon!

We had a lovely break cut short by lockdown#2
Thank you to Jordan and Chloe on reception for the warm welcome and explaining everything to us.
Accommodation is more travel lodge than country hotel and perfectly functional apart from the lack of drawers in the bedroom .
Could do with decorating the common areas as it is a bit tired.
None of the rooms have a view and are not really somewhere you might want to spend any length of time.
The bar is very gloomy and uninspiring.
Plenty of breakfast options however no menu anywhere - virtual or otherwise. Lots of options though and I can recommend the porridge. Mr B liked the cooked breakfast.
Dinner - Good menu which I assume changes weekly. We stayed 3 nights . I had the Hake, chicken with garlic mash (to die for) and the pork (crackling was amazing!) for my mains. Mr B is a big burger fan and had that on two nights and agreed with me on the chicken. Recommend the Creme Brulee! Portions were generous and we did not leave hungry. Wine menu was limited and to my mind a bit on the pricey side.
Covid - everyone wore masks, there was plenty of hand sanitiser and tables were spaced well apart in the restaurant. There was no room maintenance during our stay unless specifically requested which was fine with us.
Overall, the room was clean and comfortable and functional. The common areas could do with some TLC. Food cannot be faulted (the chef obviously has some skill) and the staff were all lovely. Recommended.

Rubbish hotel. Staff are friendly but forgetful. Never cleaned room, didn’t do anything they said (eg change old uncomfortable mattress, remove folding bed, bring toilet rolls). Paper thin walls, very noisy. Rooms felt very hot through the night.. most uncomfortable beds ever. No possible way to sleep through the night. Other guests had similar experiences. No children’s playground despite lots of land. Tennis courts out of action. Small bottle of water in room costs £2.50. Petrol cars parked in electric car charging bays. Recommend restaurant, and friendly staff, but then going somewhere else to stay the night.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us here at New Place. We are continuing to operate with some changes to our usual service to ensure maximum protection for our guests and team. This includes limiting the number of team members who enter rooms once guests have checked in. Stayover housekeeping can be arranged on request. Indeed there is no children's playground here at New Place, but we find children love exploring our 33 acres of gardens and woodland, as well as making use of the garden games provided. We hope you may consider staying with us again in the future. Best wishes, Nathan

Just returned from a 3 night stay with the family. 3 stars out of 5 may be a tad harsh but I couldn't quite bring myself to give it higher. Not a bad place at all, but has its Pro's and Con's.
So, good stuff - breakfast was decent, ample food, bit of fruit, pastries, kids and adults happy. You eat in the Manor House which is historic and obviously very nice.
Location wise, you're in a little village, so mostly need to drive to places which was fine for us anyway. And you're close to Gunwharf Quays and Clarence Pier, both good little days out and worked fine for the kids. Plus we picked up some shopping too.
The rooms are, ok. Maybe this is where I felt a little let down. I was aware the rooms are outhouses from the manor and that is totally expected. However you basically have a chalet style room meaning as soon as you open the door you're in your entire room. It's not a self contained block of rooms, so if you want to go out then you open the door letting the outdoor cold straight into the room etc. Also if it's wet then you're bringing dirt and mud into the room immediately.
The rooms were fairly clean but the outdoor houses have an upstairs walkway for those in the rooms above, and these need a good clean, cobwebs, bugs all highly visible. Not in the rooms so much but outside and around or in hallways etc.
Pool and jacuzzi was good, bit more heat would have been nice, small gym but does the job. Jacuzzi closes at 7pm which I thought was early but then when we went to the pool at 9am the jacuzzi was closed for cleaning. Bit nonsensical to not have this done earlier in the morning so it's in use, or from 7pm the night before. Not sure why jacuzzi is closed that early as pool closes at 9.
Oh lastly, the staff were good, especially in the manor house during breakfast.
Overall a good stay, but really with the fantastic manor house it could be such an impressive venue. Think it's a management thing as opposed to people, improvements could be made but not sure the will is there enough to really push this to a quality venue.

We came to New Place with low expectations and hence we were not disappointed.
The hotel caters mainly for conferences and wedding trade and the much-flaunted manor house contains no bedrooms. Apparently, having a meeting in modern rooms in an old-ish house (built only in 1908) adds some prestige somewhere.
Our Superior Room was equivalent to a standard in a Premier Inn at most. It offered little privacy, being on the ground floor with a path directly outside the poorly curtained patio door leading to the swimming pool. The long round walkway to the dining room was unprotected from inclement weather.
There were no extras in the room, not even water. There was a fridge which we used for our own supplies. The radiator in the bathroom was scolding hot with no means to reduce the temperature. The bed was quite uncomfortable.
The drinks in the bar were limited yet expensive (probably suited more to expense accounts), the small bar had a feeling of a pub despite all that wooden paneling. There was no comfortable lounge on the ground floor for guests to relax in but there was a pleasantly located terrace just outside.
We used the small swimming pool but, as the number of users didn’t look like being well controlled during the pandemic, we did not stay long.
The dinner menu was limited but tasty; served by friendly and enthusiastic Eastern European crew. We had hake and chicken. The wine list was not imaginative. The old dining room is the most impressive in the whole hotel.
Breakfast was standard though we had to queue to get a table, a shortage of staff appearing to be the main reason. Only one toast was offered as standard though more were available upon request.
Overall, quite a miserable experience at a venue geared mainly to servicing large number of guests as cheaply as possible.

I am sorry that New Place was not for you, whilst conference business is of course important to our hotel we welcome many leisure guests who enjoy staying with us and returning year after year. It is indeed true that there are no bedrooms in the Grade 1 listed Manor House here at New PLace, a fact we do not hide. We hope one day to redress this but until then guests enjoy our food and beverage outlets located on the Ground floor of the Manor, and the upper rooms which include lounge areas and a games room for our leisure guests to enjoy. It would seem that a number of the current restrictions we are operating under due to the Covid-19 pandemic also impacted your enjoyment and I am sorry for that. We are reviewing the latest Government update with regards to how we will operate from 19th July and are pleased to have the opportunity of moving safely back towards a more unrestricted approach to hospitality. Best wishes, Nathan

Driving towards the hotel you get the spectacular view of the manor house - very impressive. Reading reviews etc I realised that we would not be staying in the actual house but in rooms next to the manor house. So this was not a problem for me. It seemed more like you would find in a holiday camp setting but once in the rooms they were clean, spacious, modern and extremely comfortable.
We had our main meal in the evening in the beautiful dining room setting with magnificent fireplace. The staff were extremely helpful and would ask chef when we had a query on an item on the list. The food was beautifully presented and so very tasteful. It really was a lovely meal. Wine is average price for a hotel.
Overall a really nice stay and walking around the grounds is lovely on a brisk morning after a superb buffet breakfast. In fact it was the best buffet breakfast I have had. It was hot, fresh and plentiful.

We stayed for 4 nights with our 3 and 6 year old, whilst visiting the area. This hotel is absolutely stunning and we enjoyed many afternoon coffees and pre-dinner drinks on the front and back lawn, taking in the beautiful views while the boys ran around on the vast lawn.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the main building. There are several dining rooms and they all have their own charm. The waitresses at dinner time always made us feel very welcome and made the children feel at ease. Whilst dinner is nice, it’s not fine dining and the price reflects this. The menu is limited but this may be due to the current circumstances. Food is served very quickly (handy when eating out with small children). Do take a moment to admire the staircase before heading back to your room, it truly is a work of art.
The family room is just a standard double room with foldable beds for the children but there was enough space for us. The price is fair for what you get. The blackout curtains were very handy for blocking out the morning light. The bathroom was a bit rough around the edges with chips in the bath, mould on the ceiling and a rusty towel rail. It could do with some TLC.
Reception was very friendly, always greeting us with a smile and they were very accommodating. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble.
The pool was fantastic! We used it every day of our stay. It was the first time we had been able to go to the pool this year and the kids were ecstatic, they had the best time. And someone always seemed to be cleaning in there.
My only comment for improvement would be to put mattress protectors on the beds. Covid or no Covid, it’s just basic hygiene really.
Thank you for a wonderful stay. Our 3 year old would have liked to stay forever.

My only comment for improvement would be to put mattress protectors on the beds. Covid or no Covid, it’s just basic hygiene really.
Thank you for a wonderful stay. Our 3 year old would have liked to stay forever.
