Detailed Reviews
Facilities were very good, offered what i was looking for, good sized room with nice big bathroom with disabled facilities which with my missing leg was very favorable.
All round good hospitality as in clean room every day washing done everyday over my extended period of stay full breakfast to any size needed.More than one would think of from a bed and breakfast .Good Internet service offered on the house.
Hospitality offered by Jason and Bongi was superb and would look forward to staying there again in the future .
This BB comes highly recommend and very well placed in Melville for all the facility's offered in Melville such as the numerous restaurants that are less than 500 meters walking distance .

It is a small but agreeable lodge, with a small swimming pool, situated in one of the few quarters, in Johannesburg, where it is possible to walk safely (Melville). There is plenty of restaurants bars and shops just around the corner. The staff is very kind and helpful.

I have stayed at this small, secluded hotel conveniently located in a side street in the Melville suburb of Johannesburg for a number of years now. When I arrived for my first visit, some five or even six years ago, the hotel exuded charm, warmth, good cheer, cleanliness, great service and good value for the rates then in effect. I wrote a Trip Advisor review which still appears elsewhere on this page extolling the virtues of the Thulani Lodge. Sadly, this is no longer the case. Over the intervening years, the standard of the hotel, as regards maintenance and upkeep, room cleanliness as well as the facilities and features included in the room rate - DSTV, free WiFi and a clean pool to name just three - have all either been abandoned or allowed to deteriorate to the point of uselessness. My most serious complaint, however, concerns the increasingly shabby, scruffy, deteriorated appearance of the hotel and it's rooms. The whole place desperately needs a thorough update and freshening as well as regular, ongoing maintenance and upkeep, but this is simply not happening. The woodwork over the entrance way leading to the reception area is literally falling to bits and may well collapse at any time. The room that I have stayed in for my last few visits is also showing a distinct lack of upkeep. The ceilings are cracked and peeling; the walls are also cracked and dirty; the curtains are a disgrace. The wooden vanity in the bathroom is desperately in need of replacement. The electrics are dodgy and some of the lamps do not work. True, nothing that a serious bit of attention and some paint would not fix, but this is simply not happening. Nor would it seem there is any intention on the part of the ageing owner to address these matters in anything other than a verbal way. Beat - the owner - removed the free WiFi connection two years ago, and now one must pay to access the Internet. Fine, if the rates reflect this, but they do not. Every year, the owner puts his rates up while the general appearance of the hotel continues to relentlessly decline. In fact, Beat is complaining that his business is way down and his rates are too low! The unfortunate reality is that his hotel is old, tired, run down, shabby, neglected and overpriced for what he offers. It is precisely this that has more to do with the fall in business than anything else he might believe to be the case. There are better and cheaper alternatives in the immediate area and I, for one, have regrettably decided that the time has come for me to move into one of them on my next visit to Johannesburg. Allan H. Adams.

We had a great three-night stay in Thulani Lodge, thanks in large part to Jason (a super spunky young guy) and the rest of the staff. We felt welcomed and at home the moment we arrived. Nice breakfast in the morning. Secure parking. Excellent location within Melville for walking to hipster restaurants. Be sure to book a tour of Soweto through them with Cecelia of Fankomo Travel and Tours. That was the highlight of our time in Jo'burg. Would not hesitate to stay here again!

We opted to stay at Thulani in Melville so that we would not have to drive at night to go anywhere.
We felt welcome from the moment we arrived and really enjoyed Jason's hospitality. Laid back, just what we wanted.
Since we are fussy eaters, Bongi let us into her kitchen to help with our breakfast, that not many cooks will do.
The beds were very comfy too, which was awesome after driving from Cape Town
Thanks Jason and Bongi - you made our stay :)

Thanks for making our jobs easier. It is always more fun and a lot easier to go the extra mile for guests that appreciate it as much as you did. Not to mention the fact that you brought the cutest little visitor that we have ever had at the lodge. Although you didn't find a home for Savanna and we are sorry about that, she is by far the cutest puppy that we have ever had at the lodge. Hopefully we see you again soon and Bongi loved the input in the kitchen, she doesn't get the chance to cook with the guests so she enjoyed having the help. See you soon and welcome to the Thulani Family. Your friend in Melville, Thulani Lodge, Jason Gmur

Love this place. It's like a chill zone for strangers looking to have a good time. The owner (I think) is a riot! Cool place all round.
It's a walking distance from 7th Street, which is a big plus. If you're in Melville on a Saturday night and don't wanna go home, check in to Thulani Lodge!

Thanks a lot, Your only mistake with the review was that you forgot to mention that Thulani is only as good as you think it was because of the people that come and stay here. We wouldn't be anything without people just like you. It would be almost like Kentucky Fried Chicken without that famous recipe. Look forward to your next visit and welcome to the Thulani Family. I've been staying here annually for 7 or 8 years. Its my haven in Johannesburg for a day or two rest after a long flight or to do business for a week or to just enjoy myself. It is less than a block from countless wonderful restaurants, shops, cafes etc. Its quiet and safe and has a pleasant woodsy feeling - nice landscaped yard, plenty of privacy. Beat, the proprietor is always ready to help with advice, taxis, recommendations or a good political analysis of the days events. Bungi cooks up a lovely homemade breakfast each morning and cares for the rooms that feels like a family member might. She also has a smile that never ends. I recommend Thulani highly for the spaciousness, quiet, friendliness and hospitality.

My girlfriend and I visited Thulani lodge in the first half of July 2018. We received great service and hospitality. From Bongi's amazing breakfast, Jason's charisma and enthusiasm, to a lovely and comfortable room. It's great place for couples and families, super close to touristic attractions, and we would strongly recommend it as a place to stay in Johannesburg.

I want to thank Jason, Bongi and the rest of the staff at Thulani Lodge. My husband and I where on a safari when he slipped a disc in his back, we were airlifted to a hospital in Johannesburg, at 10 o'clock that night I was told that I couldn't stay at the hospital with him. So I started calling around to find a room, it seemed everything close to the hospital was booked. I called Thulani Lodge and Jason said yes he had a room and would even send a Uber to the hospital to pick me up. I got to the lodge and I forgot to stop at the ATM to get some local money. Jason said "no problem" paid for my ride and even gave me money for my ride back to the hospital the next morning. Needless to say I didn't spend to much time there but the breakfast was delicious the rooms clean the bed warm and comfortable. The staff went out of their way to make me feel good (even got hugs every morning) I am back in the US my husband is doing well and I just want to thank them once again! Hugs 😍
