Naumai, haere mai, welcome to a unique Maori cultural experience in a romantic hideaway nestled in award winning gardens between the ocean and the harbour in sunny Ohope. Widely travelled we love sharing stories over complimentary drinks and nibbles. The cottage is fully self contained with King and Single beds, kitchen, en-suite, own entrance and patio area. The Queen room in our home has own toilet and vanity - share other bathroom facilities. Relax in the spa or on loungers in the garden, have a bbq or hangi with us. Continental breakfast for all visitors. Boat cruises, culture/historic cruises, kayak and bike hire.

Where do I begin? Such manaakitanga - kindness and hospitality. The peace of the whare is difficult to describe. One day the weather was too bad to go anywhere, so I had to stay put... and it was no hardship. I pottered around the whare, went on the computer, tried out Miria's multiple homemade jams on toast, and went up to the main house to chat with Miria and Taroi. They took me to Tarawera Falls, hooked me up with the fascinating Guide Rangi and his cousin Jade at Rangitaiki Tours, answered my many questions about the history of the area, and of their heritage of Tuhoe and Ngati Awa. Miria taught for many years, and there is a DVD of a production she did with local schools, about how a courageous woman stopped a battle between two neighbouring iwi (tribes) down the road at Tauwhare Pa. They knew that I was on a quest, to try and understand more about Maori life, and that I needed to prepare for my ventures further into Te Urewera, and they helped me a lot with that. They really went out of their way for me, and I really enjoyed my time there. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen had everything I needed, the shower had plentiful and hot water, and they have their own well, and refill the jug in your fridge, so you don't have to drink the heavily chlorinated Whakatane supply. I am not at my best first thing in the morning, so the continental breakfast in the whare, made by me when I wanted it, suited me down to the ground, and I had some long lie-ins as I was very tired after the journey. I can't remember the Maori words for "my heart is at peace, at rest", but that was what staying there was like. They're a very kind couple. You could not do better than to stay with them.
