I was given vouchers for the restaurant as a retirement present from my previous firm, Burnetts in Carlisle last Christmas. We finally got to go last night. We live locally so taxied there and back. From the time we arrived until we left the evening was magical. The staff couldn’t have been nicer or more professional. They were proud of their food and wines and the amount of explanation was just enough and not over the top. We had the taste of Cumbria menu with matching wine flight. The food was superb and the wines very carefully chosen. We live locally and this is the fourth time we have been over the last six years. Definitely the best. Thank you Kath, Liam and the team. We will definitely be coming back. Sue and Peter Baker.

We have just returned from a 2 night break at the Cottage in the Wood which had been delayed due to covid. It really was well worth waiting for. Kath and her team have made the whole experience easy and wonderful. Everyone was professional, friendly and offered the highest level of service. The room( a mountain view) was lovely, clean and cosy. We had dinner on the first night which was delicious and went for the full tasting menu on our second night; following a good walk. Every course was a surprise and made us both taste things we wouldn't normally have ordered, it was quite simply sublime. Breakfast was equally well cooked and offered a good selection of options. This mornings highlight being the red squirrel eating nuts just through the window whilst I ate beautiful creamy scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Thank you to the whole team for a wonderful birthday experience

We travelled 2 hours to get here for lunch and were not disappointed. Very warm welcome as soon as we walked through the door. We had to book months in advance which tells it’s own story. Needless to say, the food was excellent, with with lots of components in every dish, looked amazing and tasted great. A wonderful culinary experience!

Our stay was the most pleasant , relaxing hospitality experience we have had in many years. Kath and all her team were so helpful and friendly and their service level and professionalism were faultless. Special mention also for the food and wines which were up there with the best in the world. This is an English gem and we wish them every success in the future. We’ll be back !!! Graham and Family
