Nestled amidst a lush rainforest and pristine beaches, Shangri-La Rasa Ria Kota Kinabalu garners praise for its cleanliness and picturesque setting, though its remoteness is noted by some guests. The resort's amenities, including multiple pools and luxurious sea view rooms, particularly in the Ocean Wing, are popular among travelers, despite opinions that certain areas could use updating. While service quality receives mixed reviews, from commendations for attentiveness to mentions of occasional delays, guests have also expressed concerns over the cost of dining and activities compared to the value received.

🔵 REVIEW
💳 Check in 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Staying this time as usual at Ocean Wing, upon arrival at the lobby we were greeted with the sound of traditional musical instruments played by the resort staff themselves. We were also served complimentary welcome drinks. Ocean Wing has a special check-in counter in addition to the main lobby in the middle of the resort. FDA Jessie managed my check-in process swiftly, I was given an access card and shown to a room located on the 4th floor. The check-in process took less than 10 minutes.
✅Lobby 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The lobby at the Ocean Wing is very beautiful but smaller compared to the Main Lobby as this wing is more exclusive. Buggy facilities are provided here to make it easier for guests to move to the main lobby at the Garden Wing and certain places (upon request).
✅ Concierge 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Very friendly concierge, extremely helpful. Whenever we need a buggy service, they quickly arrange it and the buggy arrives in no time. Only at check-in time, all the buggies had run out of battery and were being charged. The resort generously used a shuttle van to transport us from the Ocean Wing to the Garden Wing.

✅Receptionist 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Jessie is a very friendly staff and immediately explained the resort package I booked in detail. She arranged the check-in quickly.
🛏️😴Room-Interior/Cleanliness/Amenities 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This time we got complimentary Wedding Anniversary decor which was so beautiful. As this stay is under the "Ria Reset with LUSH" package, a gift in form of a LUSH bath set is placed on the bed. The special thing about this room is that the bath tub is located on the balcony (Balcony tub). For privacy, window blinds can be used to cover the bath tub space.

🌅View from room 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This time we got a free upgrade (originally booked Ocean Wing Junior Suite Garden View) to Sea View. The view this time was very satisfying as we got a higher room and the sea view was simply splendid.

🚽🧻Toilet-Cleanliness/Toiletries 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Amenities from L'Occitane en Provence are exclusive and fits the room price. Bathrooms are generally clean, no problems. The bath tub on the balcony is OK, the water pressure is strong.

🌐📶Wifi / Line 🌟🌟🌟🌟
RRR has fast Wifi. I checked using Speedtest in the room, the speed can reach 125mbps. Happy to stream etc. The Samsung brand Smart TV is very easy to use, you can use this TV set to run Youtube App, Netflix etc.

🍽️Food 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The quality of the food is simply good. From breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-room dining, all types of food are cooked/prepared well and delicious. The breakfast at Coffee Terrace is superb, the food has a wide range from Western to locals. Another trainee showed us his teh tarik gimmick, nice try!
We also had the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea/coffee at the Lobby Lounge Garden Wing. Fast service and delicious food.
In-room dining is also very satisfying, the food that was ordered i.e. satay arrived quickly, still hot and tasty.

🏃🏃🏻‍♀️🏊🏻 Facilities (Gym/Swimming Pool/Spa/etc) 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
It very good, there are many swimming pool sections, this time the number of guests is controlled so it's easy to choose which swimming pool to enjoy. The kids enjoyed Cool Zone too.

✅Activities that can be done 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I want to add more 🌟!
We had time to watch and enjoy the "fire-eating" dance show performed by local dancers in front of the Sampan Bar in the Garden Wing. We're simply feel lucky because it happened to be held on the day we stayed.

We stayed here for a week and the staff were awesome, nothing was too much trouble. We had three rooms on the ground floor of the ocean wing but our room 1804 had very little vegetation at the back of the terrace which was great for the view but not so good for privacy, the other two were fine. we asked to move and were moved up one floor to 2802 which was perfect.

We loved the large balcony with outside bath and big circular lounge for two. The room itself was large with nice bathroom huge bed free minibar and more.

We had booked return flights to Sandakan to see the orang-utans etc, there and back in a day. We flew out on the first flight at 7:15am and returned on afternoon flight at 5:10pm. We hadn't booked any tours as they seemed expensive and we thought we might be able to arrange a taxi or a driver. We asked the concierge and he arranged everything for us. We had a private driver with a car suitable for the six of us (Proton people mover) who met us at the airport took us to the War Memorial, Orang-utans, Proboscis monkeys, lunch, sun bears and the buddhist temple and still had us back on time for our flight despite heavy traffic due to an accident. Our driver was excellent, spoke great English and filled in the gaps on the sites we visited. The hotel arranged pastries and a juice box in the morning as we had to leave the hotel very early (5am) as the school rush starts early and some kids start school between 6am and 7am and we went on a school day so traffic would be heavy. We arrived in plenty of time but would advise taking advice of hotel if you take this option. This option worked out about a third of the cost of a tour for six people. Message me for more info if you're interested.

Hotel also organised a diving excursion through the concierge who ensured we had a boat to ourselves, group of 5. The food options were great too and not crowded, possibly due to time of year. Seperate reviews coming for the restaurants at the resort. We had breakfast in the Italian restaurant on the ocean side of the resort which staff said had less options than larger one on other side of resort but we found it had every option we wanted and many more.

The pool is great and the policy of being for ocean rooms only is policed by life guards. Highly recommended! Don'y worry about distance from KK, hotel transfer to KK is about 80MYR (AUD$28) one way and a Grab Taxi (like Uber so download the app) was about 100MYR (AUD$36). We stopped in KK for dinner on way back from Sandakan and caught Grab Taxi right outside arrivals via the app (Special spot for grab taxis) into KK for dinner and a second one to Shangri-La after dinner, very easy.

We stayed just for one night but it was worth it! We stayed there because of the wedding reception held in the evening. It is very suitable for families, friends and couples. My room is located in the Garden Wing. I saw lots of comments that it wasn't as nice as the rooms in the Ocean Wing. But the room is on the ground floor, less noise and there is a bathtub. AND you have the nearest access to the beach, the pool and the cafe (please take note: standby before 7am as tables are quickly occupied, not sure during the non-holiday days). The beds are twin size BUT it can fit 3 - 4 people. There is a sofa bed (square shape) that comes along with its own pillow and comforter. I woke up early morning (6am) to check out the scenery at the beach and it was worth it, again. The vibe was perfectly calm and breezy. Take lots of selfies and record videos. There is a gym as well which there was only one person inside it. I would definitely come back again.

Have just returned from this beautiful Hotel. The staff were always smiling and nothing was too much trouble.
We stayed in the Garden area. Room was large and cleaned daily. Nature resort close by, and also the Golf Course, we did two early morning trips to the Golf course, and used a golf buggy to go around. There are multiple lakes and we were lucky to see Otters on our first visit. A shuttle bus will take you from the Hotel to the Golf course, it is just up the road.
The food was lovely, with plenty of vegetarian options. I do not eat meat or fish and the chef was quite happy to make me a main dish, and instead of meat I had vegetables ie sweet and sour vegetables. There is an ice cream shop on site. Fresh water available free of charge, two large sealed bottles left in the room each day, and also a water cooler near to the pool.
Would highly recommend this Hotel. If I had to say anything negative, it would only be that I had to sign in via one of those awful touch screen computers.

We have chosen Shangri-La to celebrate our 50th anniversary this year. Overall assessment on quality of service and facilities falls within expectations but not superiorly as good as we had stayed with other resorts in Bali, Singapore, Phuket. Checked in was initially disappointed with an unimpressive room, and later reallocated to a higher floor having to wait 3 hours for that room made available. Most impressive was the catering and staff at the cafe Terrace. The encounter at the Japanese restaurant was unfavourable, the tapan yaki/mountain choice of foods were tasteless, small portions, expensive. There was no showmanship of cooking and presentation, chefs need training in this aspect. We hope to get better experience with Shangri-La in Kuala Lumpur in coming trip from 11th January for five nights. Richard and Jennie Chung/Sydney.

We spent two nights in this wonderful resort on their ‘Fun in the Sun’ promo. We were upgraded to an Ocean Wing sea view junior suite which enjoyed amazing sea views and a beautiful sunset. The suite boasted a balcony tub which we used often, the room was large and airy with a well appointed bathroom. A very comfortable bed ensured a good nights sleep.
The breakfast was plentiful and delicious served by friendly and attentive staff.
An absolute recommendation is the Japanese restaurant and Chef Azli, he’s simply the best.
The pool and the service there is exceptional
All in all and despite the current restrictions we had a fabulous time.
Thank you everyone and hope to see you all soon.

We first stayed at the Shangri La Rasa Ria 18 years ago and were very excited about returning and seeing the changes. The resort is just as stunning despite more than doubling in size. We stayed in the Ocean Wing and cannot fault the rooms which are absolutely lovely.
On arrival, our experience was not great. Our rooms had been booked by another family member who was arriving 3 days later. The hotel had left 2 cans of coke and a small box of chocolates in the room for them. On realising we were not that person, a gold circle member, we were told they were not for us and whisked them away. We were a bit incredulous as coke is provided free in mini bar and a few chocolates can’t have cost much. We are still laughing about it, but it was not a great first impression. As it was fairly late, we chose to eat at the seafood buffet which was a big mistake. Whilst waiting to enter the restaurant, we were told there were no seats inside but when my husband pointed out an empty table we were then shown to it. The seafood buffet was a complete disappointment, food was cold and the restaurant extremely busy and chaotic. No one was proactive in serving us and twice I had to go and find a waiter to ask for drinks. Things only improved the following day when we ate in the Italian restaurant and had a really delicious meal with good service. The Teppanyaki restaurant, however, was the highlight and the food was superb. We knew that Coast restaurant had closed and do not understand why as this was the jewel in the crown and the other restaurants do not compare in food or ambience. As an Ocean wing guest, we also should have been served breakfast in the Italian. This was closed at breakfast and lunch so all guests ate in the buffet. So again no personal service for ocean wing guests, including having to get your own tea or coffee from the machines.
The treatments we had at the spa were excellent and I also enjoyed the reflexology at the pool. The ocean wing pool was very quiet, which was great but there was no drinks service unless you went to the bar or water machines. Due to the lack of guests, the hotel probably had less staff, which might explain the lack of service.
Whilst we did enjoy our overall stay at the Rasa Ria, there were still too many issues for me to rate it as excellent. Also, we are not sure what the experience would be like when completely full.

We were staying in Ocean Wing and how good is that? Just come and experience by yourself. Still the best resort since our childhood. The room and service were just beyond our expectations. Ocean Wing (room) allows children to play water in the balcony's bathtub without having to go out to the pool in this pandemic. Breakfast is served well and fresh (no self service due to covid-19) which i think is better because food will not be wasted since it is served upon order. Should continue to serve food in this way.

Dear _D7178RA, Thank you for your wonderful review of your stay with us in the Ocean Wing. As you mention these rooms are perfect for families who wish to enjoy the oversized bathtub on the balcony as a mini-pool. We agree with your comments with regard to the breakfast experience in Oceano on weekends for our Ocean Wing guests, where a menu is presented for your choice. We are planning to continue this style of service for the Ocean Wing to provide a different experience, guests who wish to have an assisted buffet will be able to enjoy Coffee Terrace. Thank you again for sharing your feedback, we hope to welcome you and your Family back to the Rasa Ria again soon. Best regards, Fiona Hagan

We had the ocean view junior suite. Probably the best hotel room we have ever stayed at.

Room 4/5
The only thing is we though the balcony bathtub was a jacuzzi but it wasn’t and the hot water tap was broken. Called the maintenance guy and they were prompt in repairing it.

Service 5/5
Great service. 5* hotels like Constance should take a leaf out of Shangri-La training school!

Price: 4/5
We paid $602.10 for 2 nights after redeeming a free night via hotels.com. Overall, still great value for money.

Food: 3/5
Tepi laut is great but struggled to keep up with patrons’ demands on their popular food stations such as satays and grilled station. Otherwise, food there was 5/5. Lots of mossies too due to the outdoor setting.
Buffet breakfast at the ocean wing is limited. Had freshly cooked noodle soup which came with an expiry label in it! Any hoo...

We have just returned again from the Rasa Ria after another stay and can not recommend this hotel enough. From the arrival gong to the leaving song there is something special about this hotel that brings us back year after year.

The hotel is about 45 minutes from KK and cost us 90 MYR from the airport.

We stayed for 2 weeks in the Ocean Wing. Check in was quick and the staff very polite as always. A big thank you to Lionel and Sopry for helping us when we had a flight cancelled. Thank you Sopry for always making us laugh.

The room is a fantastic size, very clean and has everything you could need. There is plenty of room for all the clothing and luggage we took for a two week stay. The toiletries provided in the room are of a high quality. The balcony is again a good size with a outdoor bathtub, day bed and seating. The room was very quiet, we never heard any noise from other guests.

The ocean wing pool was very quiet during our stay and was kept immaculate. Thank you to Johnny and Tracy for looking after us and making sure we never needed anything.

We had breakfast each day in Oceano. There is a very large choice and the food was always fresh. Thank you to Suryana again for going out of her way to look after us and always going that extra mile to make our stay memorable.

There are several choices of restaurants and bars at the hotel to choose from. The prices are high but this is reflected in the quality of food and drink served.
A special thank you to Alice, Danny, Viejl (not sure if that is how it is spelt) and Chef Elroy for making sure we wanted for nothing and nothing was to much trouble.

It has been said before in reviews that the staff are what make this hotel what it is. You are always greeted with a smile and they go out of their way to make you feel special and make sure everything is perfect. There was a lot of new staff at the hotel this year. We have been going since 2009 but have missed the last 2 years due to Covid. In fairness it is clear that the hotel is transitioning with new staff post Covid and sometimes a little more patience was required. They were always polite, friendly and trying to learn. From someone who has been visiting the hotel for 11 years, it is nice to see a new generation of Rasa Ria staff coming through.

We can’t wait to return again in 2023 to our Rasa Ria family.

The pool isn't straight like an Olympic sized pool but large enough with cut & corners to wade yrself through an enjoyable swim. Both the wings have separate pools, Garden & Ocean Wing.
