Good hotel with excellent very friendly staff.

Excellent service

Pool and beach areas good and well kept

Room good, with balcony with side sea view

Fridge and safe all included

Bathroom modern with slightly small shower but even I at over 1.8m high and almost as wide got in ok

Breakfast and dinner good
Fixed 4 course menu for dinner but a choice of 3 or so items for each course

I don’t know why they have so many negative reviews. I assume they must have made substantial improvements for 2022

Building looks a bit odd from outside but that’s personal choice

Definitely would come back

Stayed three nights on the weekend following August 15th 2023. As the title suggests, it is really difficult to give a single rating. The location is excellent, as is the swimming pool and the proximity to the sea. The beach service has an agreement with a bathroom to which it is directly connected. The structure is valuable but in the style of the eighties / nineties: I would rate it very good if it were a 3 star, I rate it poor considering the 4 stars. The rooms are spacious, perhaps too furnished. The only flaw in the bathroom: the shower is narrow, behind the door, and the central tap in the cubicle limits movement.
Average Mediterranean breakfast. Excellent pool service: sunbeds, umbrellas, new bathrooms and showers. Somewhat basic beach service: deckchairs are included in the price, sunbeds are subject to charges. As in the swimming pool there are no reserved places, first come, first served.
It is the only structure actually facing the sea in the area. If the price of the offer is fair and you are not looking for luxury in the structure and services, the place will not disappoint.

First of all I don't know why the hotel has so many bad reviews. When we booked the hotel we weren't sure because of the bad reviews. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this hotel.
Rooms and the hotel area are clean and looked after.
We weren't supposed to have a balcony but we got a room with pool balcony view, what a great surprise.
The staff is really friendly, helpful and nice. Room was cleaned every single day and had an air conditioning.
The swimming pool is great with free sunbeds. The beach/sea is absolutely lovely. Sunbeds for sitting up are free and if you want to have a lie down sunbed you need to pay for it which we didn't really like...
Otherwise breakfast was brilliant and we really enjoyed staying here.
We would definitely come back!

The hotel did arrive a driver to transport us from the Airport, but I was surprised when we arrived at the hotel in a pretty run down area.
As for the hotel, it's large and does look grand downstairs in the hall/lobby area. There's an Olympic sized pool inside which is good to test yourself on if you're a keen swimmer, there's also a beach nearby which is nice for its proximity. It's not very scenic though and is crammed full of deckchairs and people. You're not allowed to play ball games but the sea is pretty good to swim in.

The rooms are poor, the furniture is outdated the rooms are boring, there is a minibar (with no alcohol in it) but there's no tea and coffee in the room! My bathroom was modern but was the only part of it that was, there is on a clear day a nice view of the mountains if you're lucky enough to get a room away from the main road, but the view toward the pool is not too pleasant.

When there's bad weather you can only get a coffee from the bar (and you have to request a member of staff to go to the bar from reception as the whole hotel is understaffed), but you will have to sit there in eerie silence in absolute boredom. So when the weather is bad and the beach and pool are off, there's literally nothing to do it was incredibly boring here.
If you choose to explore the area its slightly run down and there's not much to do. There's an ok beach bar and there are cafe/bars around, but nearly all of them are very average looking. There's an ok park to walk in and that's it!
We came here in September and the water park and fairground just around the corner were closed!!!
They did have a good piano player in the bar one night, our LAST night here however. The rest of the week there was only muted jazz music in a tiny bar.

The one good thing is the bus at the end of the hotel that goes to Pisa so you can see the leaning tower etc, that could take up perhaps 1 day maximum.

Back to the hotel, the breakfast is pretty decent and has decent variety, it's nothing spectacular but it is fine. In the evenings the set menu comes in small portions, and the food is very average even though the staff are friendly. One day I had shrimp off the a la carte menu and i was treated to a massive plate! The food was much better than the set menu!

Overall calling this a 4 star hotel is a joke, it's far too run down for that in parts, and it isn't really the hotels fault but the area is extremely boring. Do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else.

Response from La Direzione, Altro at Grand Hotel Continental

Dear Guest, we have read your review and your opinion carefully. We are very sorry not to have left a good memory during your holiday in Tirrenia. Tirrenia is a very popular seaside tourist resort and very popular with Italian and foreign tourists, for its wide beaches, for the beautiful equipped bathing establishments, for the clean sea, for the pine forest, ideal for cycling and for tranquility. Unfortunately, for the 2020 season the entertainment in the hotel and outside has undergone reductions or cancellations to avoid crowds, see Luna Park. We allow ourselves to say that in case of bad weather, every evaluation is negatively influenced, especially when we are in a seaside resort; we point out that Tirrenia offers excellent alternatives where to spend time: 20 minutes by car from Piazza dei Miracoli and Leaning Tower, Florence and Lucca are 1 hour away by car, with architectural beauties and museums. The Cafes at disposal of our guests are two, open every day; one of this is open from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm by the beach restaurant and the American Bar of the hotel is open starting from 2.00 pm to midnight. For those who wish a coffee or a drink at American bar in the morning, the Reception staff calls a waiter from the breakfast room, close by. The cuisine of the beach Restaurant is very appreciated for the taste and the varity of the menu choice, we regret, you did not appreciate it completely. The rooms were renovated recently, all of them with new floors, some of them with renovated bathrooms. In addition, for next winter, when the flow of tourists will drop, our Management plans to start the room renovations. We are happy that you found our staff polite and friendly. Remaining at your disposal for any further informations , we send you best regards. The Hotel management

Our recent stay at this 4-star hotel left much to be desired.

Firstly, the interior is incredibly outdated, giving the impression that nothing has been updated since the hotel's inception. The TV in the room is a small LCD screen, and there are no power outlets near the bed—only two next to the TV. This made it inconvenient to charge our phones overnight.

The internet connection was painfully slow and often disconnected. The quality of the dinner buffet was poor, with very limited choices. Breakfast was no better, offering a minimal selection and few fresh options.

The cleanliness of the bathroom was subpar, and it was evident that under the bed hadn't been vacuumed for a long time. The air conditioning unit was extremely noisy, disrupting our sleep throughout the night. Additionally, there was mold in the bathroom, which is unacceptable for any hotel, let alone a 4-star establishment.

The pool cleaning schedule was poorly managed, often taking place during peak usage times instead of early morning or late evening. The shower was cramped and not user-friendly.

On a positive note, the staff were very friendly and did their best to assist us, but their efforts were overshadowed by the numerous deficiencies of the hotel.

Overall, the experience was akin to staying in a hostel rather than a 4-star hotel. The numerous issues we encountered were completely unacceptable, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We went as a family of four (our children are young adults). We chose this hotel as we needed a place near public transport so that we could tour the area. From here we could get to Pisa, Florence, Lucca etc via buses and trains, which was very easy.
We also wanted to be near the sea.
This hotel was fabulous. Always clean. Lots of areas to sit and relax. The rooms may have not been luxurious but they had everything we needed and were kept spotlessly clean by the friendly and efficient cleaning staff. Clean towels and plenty of shampoo, soap etc.
The restaurant was lovely and the food was delicious. We did intend on eating out a lot but as the food was so good in the hotel, we only dined out on one evening.
The staff in the dining room were amazing and we would like to thank Riccardo and Aurora (and the other lady, whose name I cannot remember). They were so lovely, kind and knowledgeable. They helped us out as our Italian is rubbish! Thanks guys!
Last, but by no means least a huge thanks to Mario - you are a wonderful gentleman! Thanks for your knowledge, conversation, great cocktails and classical music!

We were only two days, but enough to confirm all the positive reviews already present. Excellent reception. Friendly and qualified 5 star staff!
Fantastic location of the structure, directly on the sea, great attention to detail, from the cleanliness of the rooms to the surrounding area; hearty and varied breakfast;
Our room was really very nice, equipped with all amenities, small balcony overlooking the sea with deckchairs and chairs for the outside. Modern style interior TV wifi safe mini bar , bathroom with hairdryer and amenities (courtesy products) with a scent and quality typical of thalasso spa , what a spectacle! daily change of towels. Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We have stayed here numerous times over the years. Our complaint has been that the rooms were functional but dated. Now after a 3 year absence from Italy, we
returned to the Hotel Continental and have found the "Privilege Room." We were advised to ask for it when making a reservation and we did. The room was now modern (no mid 20th century hairdryer with a hose like before). The bathroom was modern. The bed and furniture have been modernized from the boring light stained wood of the past. All in all, a welcome improvement! The lobby, bar and breakfast area (which has been moved) are well furnished and accented. I do not know what the percentage is of rooms that are "privilege rooms." If it is an ongoing renovation in progress, they should definitely continue and finish the job. The location remains fabulous right next to the beach. The hotel swimming pool is large with much room around it for chairs. The staff remain courteous and helpful. We look forward to staying here again when we next return to Tirrenia. And the price is right. It is very moderately priced.

The hotel as such looks a bit outdated in some area's. The room is clean itself, bathroom not too big although we had room with a renovated bathroom, so fine as such. The hotel gives you a ticket to park outside for the whole of your stay, this of course avoid paying parking outside.

The restaurant in the hotel itself was closed due to Corona. You need to go to a beach restaurant nearby. I am sorry to say but this was really below my standard. The food was eatable, but no sophistication what so ever. Sometimes misses basic stuff, like some seasoning. Hence we went out a couple of times to have dinner outside although we had half board.

Dear Guest we thank you for choosing our hotel for your stay in Tirrenia and we thank you also for your compliments. The beach restaurant provides open air dining rooms, terrace overlooking the sea and large spaces, for this reason many appreciated, as well as for the service and the quality of the food choice. At the end of the summer, the beach restaurant will be closed and we will return to normal and customary service standards. We hope to welcome you again in our hotel. The Hotel Management

Very beautiful hotel with attention to detail... very elegant restaurant and delicious food... the buffet dinner served in the garden to the sound of music was evocative... the swimming pool is very large and suitable for everyone... then there is a smaller one also for children...
Possibility to use both the swimming pool and the deckchairs and umbrellas on the dedicated beach. The beach is sandy and the water is shallow…. Wonderful experience and a very pleasant surprise!!!

Hi Yes I think no 10 bus goes from bus/ train station but not clear about airport. If using the bus you need a bank card for each person and must tap when you get on and when you get off…. People get fined heavily if not paid. Yes taxi around 55 euro despite the hotel agreeing 45 and did not arrive on time when leaving so anxious about flight home- had to get a different firm.
