The Hambrough offers a mixed experience, with guests appreciating its prime location near the sea, restaurants, and shops, and enjoying the stunning sea views from spacious rooms. While some travelers find the atmosphere relaxing and praise the hotel's cleanliness, others feel it falls short, citing a tired ambiance.
The service receives accolades for being attentive and personalized, yet concerns over room maintenance and value for money persist, with some guests questioning the justification of the rates given the quality issues.

Detailed Reviews

Two of us stayed for 10 days in September 23 and we found the hotel very comfortable with friendly and professional staff. We had one of the larger rooms with a balcony which overlooked the sea which was great and it was worth the higher price. The room was spacious with a settee and two individual chairs which was nice to relax in after a day touring around the island. The breakfast was excellent as it was all served at the table with no buffet and there was a good choice and the food was lovely and well cooked. You could even have kippers or porridge and the poached eggs were just perfect. We eat once in the restaurant for an evening meal and although pricey the food was outstanding and well worth it. We had the lamb cooked three ways and the presentation was amazing. We went to the bar before the meal and were given some nice nibbles with our drink but unfortunately we were rushed to our table before having time to enjoy our pre dinner drinks. One other point was that the waitress just poured our wine straight into the glasses rather that let one of us taste it first. The only other slight issue was that the bedding was a little tired especially the pillows and we were not sure if the sheets were changed during our ten day stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Hambrough as it is very quiet and comfortable and in a good location in the town. We would highly recommend the hotel and will certainly return.

Really great stay at the Hambrough Hotel, we stayed in room 7 an exec room, partial sea view, large room, large bathroom (with lovely big window), so breeze blew through the room on warm late summer days, comfortable large bed, very clean, well decorated room, bathroom spotless. Good value at £130 per night. Didn’t eat at the hotel but understand food is very good.

Enjoyed our stay of 2 nights. Room 1 is spacious with excellent Seaview from the balcony. Service was very good and breakfast was good but disappointing that there was no self service buffet.
It appeared bookings were low as we saw only one other guest. Eating was in the bar, restaurant was closed with no dinner available as the chef was on holiday and redecorating going on in the narrow entrance hall. The car park has narrow access, unlit and the access road poorly surfaced warranting care at night. We paid £180/night and we thought £150 would have been more appropriate given all the circumstances at the time of our visit.

Having been to the Isle of Wight over some ten years - the last time previously was i 2013, I wanted to show my partner what I so loved about the island.
Back then The Hambrough was regarded as a boutique hotel of high standard, so I decided to book 3 nights. This I did on the phone and the lady that took my booking for room 1 - also kindly arranged for the ferry booking which helped greatly.
Arriving at the hotel we were greeted courteously and made our way up to room 1, the view from this room is superb however notwithstanding this, the condition and décor fell way short of expectations. There was clearly an issue with the ceiling over the bay window, and the curtains were torn from sun bleaching. The general standard of cleaning was not what I would have expected.
As this was a treat for my partner I chose not to raise this at this point as I didn't want to mar the stay.
We ate on the restaurant that evening and the food and service were really good.
The breakfast offering was good and freshly prepared and we enjoyed the start to the day on all 3 mornings.
Such a shame that the environment was so tired and lacklustre
On departure I gave feedback to the lady on reception and stated that I didn't feel that the offer was good value - she then went and got the manager, who came and we discussed my views - I was told that the price reflected that the room had sea views and a separate shower in the bathroom and it was in her words a large room. I said that the décor left a lot to be desired, I was offered a 10% discount on the price which I accepted.
Overall I was disappointed as knowing the standards that the hotel had previously renowned for it was a shame to see how time had eroded this.
When standards are high price is seldom an issue but when they drop then the question of value for money comes into sharp focus.
As is said "Caveat emptor"

Stayed for 3 nights in a pleasant room with a sea view, the location was great however the customer service was not 5 star. Admittedly we stayed whilst some covid restrictions were still in place, however we were not informed that we would not have any maid service; this meant no clean towels, beds unmade, dirty coffee cups not washed/replaced, tea/coffee/waters not replaced and the bin was not emptied. We had to ask on 4 separate occasions to try and get clean tea cups and tea bags. For a 5* establishment it would have been nice for the staff to have offered/suggested at least leaving any dirty crockery outside the room door for them to take away and replace each day. The same went for toiletries which would normally be replaced if used each day and which were not. Again, not 5* service.
We had dinner there on our first night and went into the bar for which is advertised online as serving cocktails only to be told that they don’t serve them!. We got there 45 minutes before our table booking and saw other customers being served nibbles however we were not given ours until our table was ready so we felt we had to rush. Then with dinner which was very nice my partner asked for a glass of wine and it took them 20 minutes before they bought it to her.
Overall the hotel and room itself are pleasant but the service was certainly lacking for the price that we paid.

Response from The Hambrough, General Manager at The Hambrough
Responded 30 Jul 2021
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. These have been very testing times for us all and governed by many government and local restrictions within hospitality and The Hambrough. All of our booking confirmations gave information regarding our servicing of the rooms. I appreciate that we were not servicing rooms until 19th of July 2021 for stay under 6 nights, but all guests were invited to leave requirements outside of their rooms or contact reception for anything they required. This was conveyed by notices in the room/on check in/ and in confirmation email. All of these procedures were put in place to protect you our guests and our staff. We hope that you will return as we leave these unprecedented times. Kindest Regards Suzanne

This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location overlooking the sea. The rooms are very nice and the Restaurant is particularly good, serving high class food. We only had dinner there on one night but the meal was beautifully cooked and presented. The staff in the hotel are also friendly and efficient. Breakfasts were excellent with a varied menu and the main course was cooked to order. Its also in a good location with several restaurants and pubs within walking distance if you want to eat and drink elsewhere on some occasions.
We were there for a week and had a really nice time though disappointed that we were switched from the room we had specifically booked (we need a walk in shower) to a different room that didn't have this facility. Hopefully this was a 'one off' mistake rather than a sign of any future problems. In fairness to the hotel they did give us a discount on our final bill in recognition of the problem with the room.
Despite the problem with the room I would still highly recommend the hotel as I doubt very much that this is a regular occurrence and it is a lovely hotel.

From the moment we walked in to the moment we left the staff were brilliant; a warm welcome and a friendly goodbye after 3 nights at The Hambrough.
Lovely room and fantastic breakfast each morning with a brilliant selection of choices. Unfortunately, we missed the opportunity to dine in the evening in the restaurant, maybe next time we visit we can squeeze this in. However, there are a number of restaurants just a short walk away.
Great location with seaview rooms that enable you to fall asleep to the sound of the waves. We were also lucky enough to have stumbled on carnival week and so had the added benefit of watching Ventnor Carnival and fireworks in the evening.
A great short break to the Isle of Wight, thank you The Hambrough………... we’ll definitely be back.

Situated in a lovely location right next to the sea and walking distance to a few shops and restaurants.
The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.
The view from the sea view room was amazing, very relaxing sitting on the balcony listening to the waves. The room was a good size, and the bed was fairly comfortable.
We were seated in the bar area for breakfast, which also had a great view over the sea, and Suzanne made us a delicious breakfast.
We would definitely stay here again.

What a great find. My wife and I were recommended to try here as part of the a deal for people who live or are visiting the Isle of Wight. And we are so pleased we did. This place is an absolute gem. We went for the two course lunch with a drink included. There's not a huge choice on the menu but there is something for all tastes and the food is delicious and, I think very reasonably priced for the quality. And the staff are great. Highly recommended.

Firstly we discovered that this is not a 5* hotel, when we commented about a particular item we were then advised that is a 5* bed & breakfast! So good points , very good breakfast, obliging staff, great views.
So what’s it all about then? There are over 50 steps to some rooms ( this was never mentioned when we booked ), no offer of daily newspaper, no biscuits in room, we couldn’t’ get the tv to work basically there is no welcoming information package in room, a very small info pack was brought to the room. Ok we are in our 70’s & maybe should be better informed about things. Room 5 has no pictures or painting on the walls, a bit austere for us but each to his own.
Apparently there is Michelin starred chef now operating & we are advised the his food is excellent

Response from Hambrough Restaurant and Bar, Guest Services / Front Office at The Hambrough
Responded 10 Mar 2022
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a valuable review. Your points have been noted and were discussed shortly after your departure. My apologies that you thought we were a 5* hotel, there is a difference in amenities between the two. We do indeed have a great chef Matthew Tomkinson in 6 months with us he has gained The Hambrough 2 Rosettes and a mention in the Michelin guide. Room 5 is one of our Luxury rooms and situated on our second floor, maybe a Studio Suite on first floor might be better suited should you return. Sadly due to being a Victorian building we do not have a lift but our staff are happy to help with any luggage. We do hope that you may return in the future. Kindest Regards Suzanne

Hi
We have recently opened our Fine Dining Restaurant, Head Chef Luke Taylor. Opening times 18:30pm Tuesday to Saturday Inclusive.
We Look forward to Welcoming you to The Hambrough.
Not that I recall. It's a small hotel and doesn't really warrant night staff. Hope this helps!
Hi, No I'm sorry it wasn't.
Yes, it was formerly the Channel View Hotel. I lived there briefly when my Mum worked there in 1965. It was still using that name in the 1990s and possibly later.
Hi. Yes they have these. Also, an iron & board.
