This is very much an old school, traditional hotel - the positives are really lovely staff for whom nothing is too much trouble, and formal dining etiquette observed, while the less positive may be the dated room furniture and (for example) lack of bar fridge in the room.
Rooms and bedlinen/towels very clean, daily room service.
Buffet breakfast was extremely good, everything freshly prepared.
There is an outdoor heated swimming pool but no nearby change facilities, it’s a walk to your room in the robe provided by the hotel. No gym/fitness facilities although walking anywhere will improve your fitness as Ventnor has many steep streets!
Parking can be slightly tricky, quite a few parking spaces in two dedicated car parks but some manoeuvres required when the hotel is full.
The guest lift is tiny, a throwback to when people arrived with small bags not huge cases! Four people maximum.
Staff are all extremely helpful and friendly, room service and night porter.
Telephones in bedrooms!
Over bath rain shower showerhead rather feeble water pressure and no hand held option.
Good selection of hair/body wash/lotion provided.
We had requested an ‘accessible’ room for elderly family members - this was a walk in shower - but still on 1st floor (lift available) but then a walk through 3 fire doors - staff kindly took bags to room but be aware of what you request (and need) and what is actually offered, if you need a ground floor room be specific.
It is at the top end of what we would be prepared to pay for these traditional but dated facilities.
We had a lovely stay and highly recommend the food and staff and comfort at The Royal.

We both really enjoyed our night at The Royal Hotel. The staff without exception were genuinely friendly, welcoming and most helpful. We had a garden view room which whilst not flush with modern fittings - usb sockets for charging mobile phones etc was extremely comfortable and charming . Breakfast was included in the room rate and was set out for us in the conservatory to provide more space for our dog to relax. A great selection of cold and hot courses was too tempting and we were encouraged to have both, so we did. A sausage was also conjured up for Molly the dog to enjoy later. Although we only stayed the one night we left feeling like we'd had a real break and planning our return

we have often stayed at the Royal and they continue to maintain hight standards at sensible prices. the restauarant is as stand out in terms of quality and service. the rooms are well specced with close attendance to stocking toiletries and tea/coffee etc
the pool and poolside area is very welcoming with plenty of towels and poolside refreshments available.
just a quick wander down the hill to the lovely beach - weather helped this year of course.
well worth a visit or holiday trip. Many guests of all ages - including young families and children well catered for.

Ventnor is currently a nightmare for a visitor - closed roads, etc everywhere and the Royal is not easy to find - if you haven't booked a parking space then be prepared for a slog uphill to the main car park. We asked for an easily accessible room, with a walk in shower - but access was via lift, narrow corridors and 2 fire doors before bedroom with a Yale lock! When did you last find a modern quality hotel with Yale locks with keys and heavy metal tags? All doors as far as we could see (to bathrooms etc as well as the main entry to the room) with ordinary bolts on inside, unopenable from outside in an emergency. Friendly, helpful staff could do nothing to change our room. Food excellent, Ferry bookings efficient and our stay cut from 7 to 4 nights, as the view from our room was of a blank wall and the Car Park - nothing to cause us to stay longer. Gardens very pleasant. BUT what H&S would say, I wonder.

Overall an excellent hotel stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had a large room with a sea view and there was little or no disturbance from other rooms. No Air Conditioning in this room but an open window sufficed to keep us cool! Staff attention was first class and were impressed with the quality of service throughout our stay. Breakfast quality and options were very good and dinner was good to despite a limited menu during our stay. No gripes at all, but our room could do with updating particularly in the bathroom, where the facilities were a little dated.

We stayed at The Royal Hotel for 4 nights last week Wednesday to Saturday. My husbnad and I, our 19 year old daughter and my 83 year old mother. We all had a wonderful stay. The hotel felt like 'home from home' because the staff were so warm and welcoming and yet it was extremely elegant but notat all 'stuffy'. The gardens and the heated pool area were really lovely. Usually hotels feel more like a 'base' from which to go out and explore, but staying at The Royal is a holiday in itself we felt....we were very happy to sit in the bar, gardens and conservatory area at the front of the main lobby. The breakfast was delicious and the waiting staff were generous in terms of encouraging guests to have as much as they wanted to and in their flexibility to provide us with our particular needs. The bedrooms were decorated in a traditional style to reflect the character of the beautiful building and the bathrooms were spacious and provided us all that we required. Everything was extremely clean. Staff service was faultless througout our stay. We can't wait to stay at this very special hotel again. Thank you for a lovely holiday.

A really excellent hotel, primarily because of the staff. We've stayed here many times, but only once before at Christmas. As usual everything was up to the expected standard. Yes, the hotel needs some sprucing up as areas of it are tired and in need of some remedial work. For our part, on this occasion, we had a splendid, seemingly recently refurbished premium room, so no complaints there. Wi Fi was excellent as ever.

Impressed, as before, that the hotel has the right 'festive balance' and doesn't go wildly over the top! The Christmas entertainment programme offered performances from the Shanklin Town Brass Band on the Monday, Christmas Carols from a local choir on Christmas Eve, and a jazz duo on Boxing Day. The latter isn't my thing, but all were good at what they did. There is also a good resident pianist.

Food is usually good, here. There were various afternoon tea type buffets and meals - the offering was excellent for the most part, although I, myself, found Christmas Lunch a bit ordinary and my wife and I both felt the Christmas Day evening buffet left a lot to be desired (especially compared to memories of having had Lobster in the buffet back in 2019!)

Staff were very welcoming, professional, helpful and on the ball, as they always are. In essence, the staff make the hotel! Particularly notable for excellence amongst a generally high standard were Dan, the Duty Manager, Hannah, Madeline and Janice in the restaurant, Luke in the Bar, and Caroline and colleagues on Reception.

I see I noted in my review of our 2019 stay that "The personal stocking gift bag left in the bedroom was a nice touch". It was, and it wasn't replicated this time. Cost cutting? Maybe. But nonetheless disappointing.

The Ventnor Boxing Day swim in 2019 was cancelled due to the stormy weather (not the hotel's fault, obviously). This time around it took place and is well worth the walk down (and back up) the steep hill to the sea front to watch. The atmosphere was terrific.

The hotel, generally, has a very high rate of returning guests, especially over Christmas/New Year. It will be interesting to see if this remains the case under the new ownership!

We will definitely come back again, and intend a future Christmas visit, albeit next year we anticipate trying the New Year package instead.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review of your second Christmas stay at The Royal. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit and appreciated the festive atmosphere we aim to create. Your kind recognition of our team members—Dan, Hannah, Madeline, Janice, Luke, and Caroline—truly means a lot. We're proud of our staff, who always strive to ensure our guests feel welcome and well cared for, and your words affirm their dedication. It's wonderful to know you enjoyed your recently refurbished premium room, as well as the festive entertainment programme. We’re especially pleased that the balance of festivities met your expectations, and that you appreciated the thoughtful performances, even if jazz wasn’t quite to your taste! We have noted your constructive feedback about the Christmas Day buffet and stocking gift bags. These details are valuable as we continuously strive to enhance our guests’ experiences, especially during such special occasions. We’re also glad you had the opportunity to witness the Ventnor Boxing Day swim this year—it’s certainly a unique and spirited event! We’re grateful for your loyalty and your reflections on how The Royal has become a cherished part of your holiday traditions. We look forward to welcoming you back, whether for another Christmas stay or your anticipated New Year’s package in the future. Kind regards, Seda Smith Duty Manager

First time at the Royal Hotel and stayed for 5 nights. Overall a very good hotel. Had two very comfortable rooms, although as others have pointed out, the rooms on 2nd floor get very warm, even though it was a pleasant 20 degrees outside. But the receptionist did readily provide a fan for both rooms. The hotel was well staffed and the staff seem to be well trained in customer service, particularly the young receptionists who were always helpful. If we had one "complaint", and the reason for only 4 stars, it is that dinner in the restaurant is very over- priced for what you get. The food is nice but for £30 per main course, we would have expected even better in terms of quality and quantity. In our view, more style than substance. And to charge £9.50 for two tiny scoops of sorbet and some puffcandy seems unjustifiable. A few less expensive options would have been welcome. Also, when we booked we were told there was no bar food, when, in fact, there were sandwiches, childrens meals and other items from the menus on offer all day/evening. However, that apart, a very good hotel on IOW for comfort and service.

The food was sensational. The breakfast yoghurt and granola is individually made for you on request. The scramble eggs are genuinely made fresh as at home. Floor carpets on stairs were a bit worn but that reminds me of home.

Returning for a business conference, we realised how lucky we were to be staying at the Royal.
As always, every single member of staff treated us with care and attention, nothing was ever too much. The food at breakfast and in the evening was exceptional. I chose from the vegan and vegetarian menu. Wow - stunning taste sensations with every dish. The fondant celeriac was incredible.
The crisp, clean linen in the room, alongside fluffy, large towels and complimentary products of quality made the time in our rooms delightful.

Thank you to everyone.
