In its favour this hotel is about as close to the city centre as you can get however the rooms are dated very dated the bed however was excellent the room was clean with the notable exception of mouldy sealant around the bath. Considering the lack of facilities ( the pool is permanently shut and we couldn't find any trace of its rumoured gym) it's pricey and so is the parking at £11 a day in the hotel car park. Public areas were clean and tidy and the buffet breakfast was very reasonable. However as this was booked for a birthday weekend away for my partner we were rather disappointed with it I've stayed in much better for much less and tis hotel doesn't come anywhere near the standard I expect from the Marriott brand.

I was allocated room 103 and it was dire. Hot and noisy. So hot in fact that there was a large mobile Aircon unit in the bedroom that had to be switched on all night just to avoid heat stroke! Other than that the room was well appointed.

I’ll write more tomorrow about my awful experience here during a wake reception but I’m in the room, with no big screen tv working where the reception supervisor, Paul, suggested I use my mobile phone for entertainment because it was a bit late as no tech person on call. Marriott??? Really?? All the bombardment of Marriott bonvoy bonhomie rubbish. Get the basics sorted.

Thank you for providing feedback on your stay. Although we do have an on-site maintenance team, and engineers on call outside of standard working hours, the most convenient and quickest solution was a complimentary upgrade / room move in this instance which you firmly decided against. We can only apologise for any inconvenience caused during your stay and wish we could have resolved this for you. We can confirm we have reported your concerns to the maintenance team already who will be able to investigate this further. We thank you for alerting us to this issue.

We received a warm and friendly welcome on arrival. Staff very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Room lovely, clean and comfortable. Housekeeping was excellent, consumables regularly replenished without needing to ask. Lovely breakfast, buffet with plenty of choice. Food in the bar area also very good. Also car parking on site which is something we always look for when booking a hotel. We would like to give a shout out to Jacqueline who was on duty every morning at breakfast, she was delightful, and went out of her way to deliver excellent service and always with a lovely smile. A credit to the hotel. We definitely will stay again.

Super hotel close to city centre, upgraded to a river view room for 4 days, comfy king size bed that allows for a great nights sleep. Housekeeping excellent, tea, coffee etc replenished each day, and front of house staff courteous and knowledgeable on local dining options. Would definitely use again if staying in the Durham area.

Offers the level of accommodation you would expect from Durham's premier hotel, in a convenient central location by Elvet Bridge. Not the cheapest, but worth the price. Flying visit so didn't experience any of the communal facilities, but our family room was spacious and comfortable.

We had just 24 hours to explore Durham and this hotel fitted into our plans perfectly. It is located close to the centre, by the river in a quiet area. We were able to easily walk to the Cathedral, the Castle and the University buildings as well as the shopping area. The hotel offered a good experience - clean, well equipped and perfectly adequate food. The staff were helpful, courteous and friendly and there was onsite parking. A reasonable price for our stay and we were happy with the experience.

Another great stay at this wonderful hotel ! Down memory lane for us as our wedding reception took place here forty nine years ago. The staff are brilliant in all areas, very helpful and friendly. Special thanks to Victoria and Danielle on reception, Jacqueline and Julie in the restaurant, food is very good, all bar staff and the fun house keeping staff who did an excellent job. The room was spacious and very comfortable with gowns and slippers a bonus. I’ve mentioned a few names I could remember but to be honest all the staff were brilliant. Thank you! We’ll be back next year to my wonderful home city to meet family and friends.

We booked an accessible room as I use a mobility scooter and it was ready when we arrived at 11.30 am. It was a really large room on the ground floor (room 008) . It had plenty of room for us, my scooter and luggage and everything was spotlessly clean. The bathroom or should I say wet room was once again capacious with lots of facilities for disabled guests such as grab rails and pull down shower seat . My only concern was that the sink was a little close to the toilet, meaning that whilst getting up , I had a tendency to use the sink as support rather than a grab rail. The bed was huge and very comfortable . We both slept really well , I usually have to get up several times during the night, but I only got up once as I slept so well. There was a small fridge, which was handy as I like to buy fresh milk for tea in the room . There was nice tea tray , but no bottled water, so I am glad I took my own and the fridge was handy to keep it chilled. Staff were friendly and welcoming and could not have been more helpful . There were ample power outlets in the room , plus a very handy USB adaptor at the bedside .Lots of storage space , large wardrobe with iron and ironing board plus a hairdryer .The location was ideal for Durham , with shops just a short distance away . My only gripe was the car parking charges at £11 , even for disabled guests . I have stayed in many hotels and they tend to validate parking , or at least discount for disabled guests . We did not eat at the hotel as we have dietary issues and at £13 a head for breakfast, we did not feel it would have been value for money.
