Two night break at this lovely old castle. Very comfortable bed, fluffy pillows and spotless room. The breakfast service was excellent and the hot food was delicious. The cold buffet breakfast though does need some tweaking. There was cold meat but no cheese( as stated), the juices were rather watery too. All of this can be forgiven because it was lovely hot food. The castle is great! Lovely courtyard garden too. I’d definitely return if staying in the area again. My only real niggle ( minor ) was because of the weather my boots were rather wet and muddy so a door mat would resolve this. I nearly had a fit when I saw the cream carpet after I’d entered! Great hotel.
Very disappointing. I thought we’d treat ourselves to a nice room as it was my wife’s birthday and Mother’s Day. We opted for the Castle Superior room at £184. Very small room!! I understand this is an old building but the cost was far too much for what we got. I’d say just over £100 would be more like it. We didn’t even get breakfast in the rate, but again I knew this on booking but expected a better room! I travel a lot with work and stay in many country houses and castle hotels and this was by far the most over priced I’ve ever stayed in. Caused a bit of a down on the night and the meal which was good. I just felt all night that I’d been ripped off and even though the wife said she was fine, she was actually disappointed. Won’t be going back again.
Ok…. So I don’t really want to be horrible about this place as we live locally and have had many lovely meals here, but…. My husband very kindly booked us a over night stay which cost £189 (breakfast not included) for a castle superior and what looked like a very nice room on-site, however the room was really not worth the money! The room is really clean, however very small, very tired and the corridors are dark and smelly. The castle itself is impressive, but on this occasion did not meet the standard of what the room rate was.
Booked champagne afternoon tea for my Mums 80th. It was abs lovely, delicious sandwiches and cakes and they made a fuss of Mum which she loved. The castle and grounds are gorgeous with a very historic feel and lovely views. Parking is plentiful.
Amazing time at Lumley. The GM Gordon was friendly and attentive at all times. Our Christmas experience was one of the highlights of our trip. The food was incredible, and exceeded our expectations.
We booked a two night stay at the castle for the two of us. As we were going to be resting following the trip up and ahead of a friends party, we booked a courtyard state room. The hotel is an impressive sight as you arrive. We were nicely greeted at reception and confirmed our breakfast slot for the morning. Be warned, if you want breakfast they have a limited availability and you must pre-book. Our room was in the courtyard and of an OK size. Disappointing for a “state” room there was just a single lounging chair, not space for a couple to sit and relax. The decor is in keeping with the hotel, however, looks tired. Breakfast was chaos and disappointing - not worth the costs in our opinion. Service was slow and disorganised. On the menu the continental breakfast looked impressive, in reality - the continental selection looked like it had been attacked by locusts and not replenished. On asking there was no juice available (expect for orange). Eventually we managed to order cooked breakfast, which took a while to arrive - on arrival it was lukewarm - though nice enough in taste.…
Came here for Sunday lunch and the food was great. The meat was seasoned well, Yorkshire puddings were fantastic and the gravy was also really nice. Staff were very attentive and the set menu price is more than reasonable. The atmosphere was good, music wasn’t too loud and the lighting was adequate for the setting.
Have stayed here years ago and it remains a truly lovely & luxurious location. The staff are extremely attentive & well trained. The restaurant staff were particularly accommodating of my dietary requirements. I stayed on a quiet night and was upgraded to a lovely room which, although too warm during the night, was well equipped. My only suggestion would be to double the amount of signage around the site. If you're in a hurry & take a wrong turn down a corridor it's easy to become disoriented, particularly in the dark at night. For those with limited mobility it's a non-starter as the age of the place means it's quite inaccessible with long walks between different parts of the building. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area
Stunning in every way !! We booked a castle state room and it was out of this world gorgeous. Highly highly recommend 10/10 the area is great for location as well with a nice little town centre near by Chester le street has some lovely eating places. Some super parks and river walks.
From checking in the service was excellent right through our stay. Very special place, delightful library bar, and very impressive Black Knights restaurant where the meal we had was superb. Our room had a four poster bed with a bathroom through a wardrobe door!! All the staff and manager went out of their way to look after us. Looking forward to our next stay. Many thanks to all.
