Chose the hotel purely due to the brand name because I felt there’s be a decent standard during Covid crisis.

The hotel is spotlessly clean and they’d managed the sanitisation pathways really well meaning that if guests follow the protocols in place they are very well protected.

Staff were very professional, in particular the restaurant and breakfast staff, they were so attentive.

Food was good. Served hot (toast a bit meh).

Rooms spotless. Comfortable beds.

Would have been a 5 if they’d dealt with a noise issue better. At midnight there was a large group making a lot of noise on the seating out front, on the 5th floor we could literally hear their conversation. Night reception said they’d “have a word” but didn’t meaning one of us had to dress, go down to the reception and insist they asked them to keep it down a bit - need to look at their noise policy and enforce it.

Perhaps ask for a room away from the front of the hotel.

Hmm, something just didn’t work on this visit.

Stayed in August 2020 and felt they’d really done the business when it came to managing the hotel during times where they had to introduce restrictions.

We asked for a quiet room and to their credit we were given room 428 which was set away from the front of the building and elevators.

Hand sanitisers at main doors were empty upon arrival. They did rectify this quickly.

Checking on was efficient.

Room was clean and comfortable but really really warm and the air con was pants. Heated towel rail meant the bathroom was like a steam room.

Feel Marriott group missed the chance during lockdown to freshen up the decor and refurb this hotel. Threadbare carpets in the lobby by the lift, and it now just looks a little tired.

Breakfast was a bit daft. Table service was lovely but someone from the kitchen didn’t listen to the person who had taken our order and before we could finish our cereal a full English breakfast was plonked unceremoniously on the table (and there was really no room for it to go). The hot food was was not hot, it was warm, and when we queried we were told it was ‘troughed’ in the kitchen and dished up to order. Bacon and sausages were a bit anaemic. They graciously replaced it and to their credit it seemed fresher and even the plates were warmed. It was like a cafe breakfast, a pile of food but without finesse. Quality should come before quantity.

Tip - don’t stick fried eggs on top of the rest of the breakfast, it’s messy and unappealing.

Hotel seems to have lost it’s 4 star edge and that’s a shame, although the service from the breakfast waitress was astounding.

This is our third Marriott hotel stay in the UK since lockdown. This was an excellent stay and can not recommend it enough. I had originally booked this for June but due to the situation was forced to cancel and re book; with this I had communication from the hotel and found this very reassuring. I have stayed in this hotel as many as 10-15 times as it is close to the Metro Centre and not to far from home. The room was definitely well cleaned and everything was in good working order. I'm not entirely sure what's changed but this hotel seems to be more uplifting than it used to be and everything just seems nicer.

Breakfast was included in the rate and recent previous stays in other Marriotts the choice can be poor due to restrictions, one actually offered a breakfast bag at our door which was extremely lack lustre and repetitive. However breakfast was order at table and come welcoming with pleasant staff. The hotel seems to be dealing with covid well and was impressed with cleanliness, the way things such as teas and coffees were bagged in the room, and the social distancing provided in the restaurant. It was nice to see the leisure centre be reopened, although we didn't have time to explore this, towels were provided in room with antibacterial wipes.

I will stay here again and look forward to doing so, compliments to Laura, who sorted our cancelation in June, and for check inn + our added request for pillows.
-Hope to be back soon.

We are still here in room 401 arrived yesterday. Noone told us at check in that there is no airconditioning, and no housekeeping! What kind of hotel/marriott is this? I was just told by the very nice front of house staff that there is a Marriot policy of no housekeeping for three days as part of “covid protocol”. So this means a hotel stay in a room which is never cleaned, waste baskets not emptied and no fresh towels or toiletries. How can you charge your guests for a hotel stay without providing the most basic of hotel services? To be fair to the reception staff when I complained they sent us up some fresh towels and toiletries as am sure even they were embarrassed. Shame on Marriot. No one should stay in this hotel.

This is a very average Marriott, and as someone who has been here a few times due to family living nearby, I’ve had varying levels of service, but when you’ve paid £250 for two nights there are a few things you would expect.

Firstly, there is no housekeeping. This wasn’t explained at all to me when checking in. I do not understand how this makes a hotel more Covid safe, but let’s say it does: you need to leave plenty of shower gels/towels/tea, coffee, milks etc to account for this. I cannot fully understand how a room this expensive is one that I have to clean myself.

Secondly when I did call to reception to get more items it rang and rang. I had to go down myself to get items. To be fair, the staff member was polite and apologised.

Thirdly I had no iron in my room. There should be, and this was only discovered on the morning of a funeral when I required it. I will admit it wasn’t the biggest issue in the world to have one sent to the room but for the Marriott it’s these little things that you expect to not have to do. In the moment, considering the event I was attending, it just got to me that these little things weren’t being done.

Otherwise, the hotel remains average. The staff are always friendly, though it’s one of the few Marriott hotels where they don’t seem to acknowledge status of a member. This usually isn’t an issue but then the experience doesn’t match either…

I can’t speak for the bar or the gym or pool, but I have heard good things about them.

2nd stay at this hotel and was it disappointing to say the least. As a Marriott branded hotel it does not come close.
Checked into room and went to put some perishables in bar fridge but it wasn't there. There was the space where it was meant to be, and that hadnt even been cleaned.
Complained at reception and told it was a Deluxe room and they do not have a fridge only the Superior rooms have a fridge. Then asked if they had a Superior room vacant. "Yes we do" - good i will have it.
As a Platinum member i should have been upgraded on arrival.
Some of the reception staff when out of their way not to acknowledge guests. Had one while standing behind reception turn around when she saw us, when we walked past to the elevator.
Went to have breakfast on xmas morning but couldn't have a coffee because the machine was broken. (must only have one)
Best of all this is over the xmas period and the restaurant was closed for 3 nights and for lunch on xmas day.(unless you had a booking) This hotel is in the metro center not close to other resaurants bars. I understand it was xmas but there was no prior notification that food would not be available until after you had checked in.

Although i like earning points its going to be hard to justify staying here again

The room was incredibly dusty, even when we asked for the room to be cleaned, we popped out for an hour and was assured it would be cleaned when we got back. This wasn't the case when we returned to the room. The cleaners came whilst we were in the room, emitting an odor that lingered and didn't really make the situation any better. We called reception several times and had no response. The customer service in general was extremely slow, we were told beforehand we could gain early check i, when we arrived we had to wait 2 hours for the room to actually be ready and even after that it still wasn't cleaned efficiently especially given the extra care that should be taken due to COVID. The only one redeeming quality hence the one star was the pool, the pool was the only redeeming quality. The location was good too, however it doesn't make up for the lack of basic hygiene levels across the entire hotel.

We stayed at this hotel for a quick overnighter to see family. First impressions were good, a large family room as we were three adults, nice and clean. My daughter did say she could feel the springs in the sofa bed however . Our bed was huge and nice clean white duvets. Good size TV, coffee and tea etc
Bathroom was a good size too and very clean, however the sink taps moved slightly when you turned them on and the bathroom as a whole looks a little tired. As does some of the decor in the room.

Breakfast was very good lots of choice and healthy choices too. Staff were very friendly. Unfortunately we had a fire alarm that went off in the evening so we all trundled down the stairs, however it would have been nice if someone had come out and told us the reason, we just all followed back in when we were allowed no explanation.
All in all though I would recommend this hotel 👍👍

Myself, Mam and my two granddaughters recently stayed here for two nights. We chose it for the proximity to the Metrocentre. We arrived by train and got a taxi to the hotel as it was a bit far to walk for my Mam. The taxi was great it was local firm Deans who were very efficient. We had two rooms and they were opposite each other. They were very spacious with king size beds. The rooms were very clean and there was toiletries in the bathroom. There was tea and coffee making facilities. We went for a meal in the hotel restaurant, however we had to wait nearly an hour for the meal even though there was hardly anybody in. Not much choice for the kids and was quite expensive. breakfast was also expensive so we decided to go to the nearby McDonalds which was very handy and much cheaper. After spending full day shopping we decided to use the pool in the hotel. We loved this, it was very quiet and lovely and warm. Towels were provided free of charge and the kids loved the whirlpool. The hotel is great for the metrocentre and an easy walk. We also went to Pizza Hut, which is opposite the hotel.. When we were ready to go home, we booked Deans taxi again to take us to the train station and again was very efficient. We would stay here again. It wouldn’t use the restaurant due to service and price.

I don’t usually re-review previous destinations – however, for the first time since the pandemic started, we’ve finally started to venture out, see family again and have fun again. When visiting the North-East, this is our go-to hotel, as it’s consistently clean, the staff are always friendly and the breakfast is always good. The hotel is large and roomy, and while a little dated from the outside, nice enough on the inside.

In my previous review (from 2015), one of my criticisms with the hotel was that the roads leading the car park were a mess – potholes everywhere: I am happy to report that this issue has been resolved since our last visit – smooth as silk!

Another nice thing: I’m sure that the air conditioning has either been replaced/upgraded. You can have your room like an icebox if you like.

I can’t really fault my stay, overall. So this hotel is getting 5/5 this time.

I do have, however, one small point of constructive criticism – I was happy to see the hand sanitisers around, in the lift and in the lobby. COVID is still a risk however, the pandemic isn’t over, so it would have been nice to see these in the restaurant area, especially at breakfast time. When you’re touching utensils that other people have handled, and then you help yourself to pastries, being able to clean your hands prior to eating would be good. I ended up having to walk into the lobby to do this – again, not a major point, and one easily remedied, I think.

Keep up the good work, guys!

I think some rooms do, unlike a terrible stays at Leeds and York Marriott recently. Newcastle was one of the better ones out of the three. Crowne plaza near the train station was nicer though.
