Comfortable bed, would have liked a workspace and chair. Good shower. Very good service from reception and breakfast staff. Good breakfast.Convenient free car park Can't fault this Ibis. Very annoyed with Accor that the stay was not automatically recorded on website. I booked this stay specifically to keep my loyalty points. Now I am having to prove I stayed to retrieve the 60,000 points that have been wiped off my loyal programme.

Lovely welcoming staff on check-in and a clean room for the night. Having used Ibis in Europe, I knew just what to expect. Pod style bathroom, reasonable (but not luxurious) bed, enough storage space for an overnight stay, tv, kettle etc as advertised. Windows do open, albeit with a 'restrictor' - common in UK hotels these days - not ideal if you want a good blast of fresh air. We did not use the heating/air-conditioning - instructions looked very clear. The main drawback of this hotel is there are a lot of bars in the vicinity - ask for a room at the back as these are quieter. Easy to reach on foot from the railway station, town centre and 'Sands Centre' within walking distance.

This is the usual Ibis offering, pretty minimalist and simple. The problem with this style of hotel is that after a few years it begins to show its age. The stuffy airless reception-bar-breakfast area on the ground floor, with Heart Radio playing constantly, is rather gloomy and joyless. There’s a pool table (£1 a game) but it’s too close to the front window and side wall so you can’t play shots near the cushion on those sides without tilting the cue 45 degrees. Seems a bit daft. The corridors upstairs are equally stuffy with more than a whiff of cigarette smoke, and the carpets are very grubby. We had a triple room as we thought it would give us more space than a twin but there was barely room to put two small suitcases on the floor. They have those pod shower rooms, nice idea in theory but there was no extractor fan and the shower pipework leaked, with water spurting out of one of the joints. The thin towels were not changed every day so they were very soggy after two days, not sure whether they change them if you stay for longer. The room supposedly has some kind of air circulation system but that didn’t seem to work and without opening the window the room was as stuffy as the rest of the hotel. The humming from the fans on the roof made opening the window less of an option at times. Breakfast was good, even if the coffee was pretty awful and the scrambled eggs watery from using pasteurised liquid egg (as most hotels do these days, sadly). But the staff were very pleasant and helpful and as I can’t comment on other hotels in Carlisle I’m not sure if there are better places for the money.

It’s opposite two Wetherspoons and countless other bars. Like an idiot, I thought this was going to be quiet on a Friday night. I should have realised when I saw the earplugs provided in the room. Had I stayed any other day of the week, I suspect I would give it five stars for value and location. Unfortunately…

We know Ibis are “no frills” but use them from time to time because they offer no surprises. A small clean room, reliably functioning internet and a good location. We needed a place to stay heading from Scotland to Birmingham and the Carlisle Ibis seemed to meet our needs. Getting there in the dark was a nightmare as the good town of Carlisle boasts few if any names on streets posted. The parking lot is behind the hotel in a decidedly seedy area with a bingo hall and other sources of “amusement”. We were nervous parking in the lot - but in the end the car was still intact the next day. From the parking lot you enter the hotel through a back door. The place was deserted except for a couple of employees, we had prepaid online so checking went well. On our way to the lift we passed a couple of grimy armchairs with badly stained arms. The lift took us up to our floor. Usual layout - fine but not usual level of cleanliness. The hall carpet was filthy, many walls and doors had scuffs and dings. Got to our room and “the icing on the cake “ was a sticky bathroom door handle. That had be going back to the car for a packet of disinfecting wipes to wipe EVERYTHING down. We know the layout - pocket bathroom etc. and minimalist decore but we do expect clean. The sliding curtain was hanging by a corner, side tables looked like they were falling down, but the filthy carpet tells me that management is asleep at the switch and does not bother to walk the halls. The next day I heard housekeeping vacuuming the carpets. Poor girl was working hard but needed a steam cleaner to be effective. I’d stay away from this particular Ibis until they pull their socks up and even then I would be cautious of using it given the nature of its surrounding locations. In the end - midweek- we had a fairly quiet night and left first thing the next day.
