The location was absolutely perfect for us, and you walk out the front door to the main shopping area.
The pool was closed due to COVID, but we knew that before booking, so wasn’t a problem.
What annoyed us was that the family in our corridor next to room 144 were very noisy, and we were awake from about 6:30 with people coming and going and knocking doors constantly.
We also booked breakfast, and it was a shambles. We ordered our tea/coffee, toast, cereal and cooked breakfasts all at once. It was only half full. The tea/coffee came and so did the toast. We then waited....and waited.....and waited for our cereal and OJ. I mentioned to a waitress and we then got our OJ, but then the cooked breakfast came and we hadn’t received the cereal yet. We just took the cooked meals as they would probably have just been reheated for us while we had our cereal. Not worth the money, and the portion size of beans was a bit cringey.
I got a tastier breakfast in the Tesco on the way out of Carlisle for HALF the price.
In summary, I would probably try somewhere else, which is a shame, as my first impression had been good. It’s a nice old fashioned building. Got parked at the back ok once we found the car park. You need to use the separate postcode (CA3 8HB) to find it, as the front of the hotel is pedestrianised.
The location of the hotel is fantastic but the Carpark is a little hard to find and because of roadworks around the city it meant we had to go down a closed road. When you get to the gate you have to buzz and wait for someone to come and open it. The hotel should make this electric as the staff are running around constantly. But the Caro park is secure and we were confident leaving the car there.
Now here’s the biggie! Breakfast was inedible!! The bacon was absolutely dried out (been under a hot plate I reckon) the sausage tasted cheap. I left this as did my partner (and he loves a full English) the croissants and pain au chocolat were stale. The waitress could clearly tell the breakfast was sub standard as she didn’t ask why we’d left so much. To be clear the waitress was efficient and the standard is clearly not her fault so we didn’t complain.
Would we stay here again?? … probably not but there’s not much choice in Carlisle
We had a room in the modern annexe behind which was delightfully quiet, except for the noise made by Seagulls who appeared to live on the adjoining rooftops. Our accomodation was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast service was in the upstairs dining room, and was good and varied and well staffed. We dined in the restaurant on 3 evenings from the restaurant menu (different to the bar menu) and enjoyed the choices of interesting dishes. The price at £19.95 for two courses or £24.95 for three represented good value for this quality and choice.
The staff members were efficient and professional and there seemed to be plenty. Service was good even when there were two weddings going on elsewhere in the hotel.
The only reason for not awarding five stars is that the swimming pool was closed (presumably for Covid reasons) so not all facilities were avaialble, and that the parking was limited and difficult to access. We did not actually have a problem getting a space each day, but, especially on the day of the weddings, it was not guaranteed that we would be able to have one.
All in all though, we would stay here again, if we were visiting Carlisle or the surrounding area, as it is easy access to the Lakes, to Scotland and to Northumbria and well as the rest of Cumbria.
All Covid safety precautions were in place and we were happy to abide by these rules but to run the hotel in a sub standard manner while charging full rates is unexceptable, service with a attitude that we were a inconvenience to the staff
The cleanliness of the room fell far short of our expectations given we had paid for a executive suite the room was dirty the sofa was badly stained, the windows were covered in cobwebs ,the shower controls where broken and the toilet seat was completely off its fixings. These items are easily identifiable when the room is being cleaned and not difficult to fix/repair. We had dinner in the hotel the food had obviously been cooked and poorly reheated the lounge bar was tired and very un-welcoming to the extent that the one member of staff behind the screened bar told us that we could not have the TV changed as she had been instructed by her management , there was only us two in the lounge! Our main disappointment was in the staff response when we reported our issues at the reception the duty manager (Tom) was called to assist. After we explained our concerns with our suite ,he advised that he would inspect the room to check and report back . We waited in reception for over 30mins on his return ,he never returned even asking reception for a update. We returned to collect our vehicle from the carpark to be met with a sheepish duty manager opening the security gate for us. We spoke to him he agreed that the room was in fact sub standard for the £140 rate charged but offered nothing not even a apology instead said that this condition was due to the virus not the lack of cleanliness or duty of care with the rooms.
If the hotel cannot function as a hotel due to the virus then it should not be trading and certainly charging the rates they are. This hotel is being run as a truck stop for working men
I've got to say, the room I stayed in was the worst room I've ever been in. It was clean and the bedding was fresh, but the actual room itself looks like it hasn't been modernised since AT LEAST 1970 !!!
There was some old radiogramme thing between the two beds, at the back of which was a birds nest of dodgy looking wiring.
The furniture was old, very very very old.
The bathroom was horrible, so horrible in fact that this is the first hotel I've ever stayed in where I didn't have a shower.
The grout around the bath was either mouldy or missing, the shower curtain was dirty.
I appreciate that it's tough during Covid for hotels but this place is just utter rubbish. The building itself is beautiful and the reception and hallways all nicely decorated, but that's it. The rest of the place is dirty and falling apart.
I opted for the breakfast and wish I hadn't, grey watery mushrooms, slightly warmed up tomatoe meant I left most of it and stopped at Tebay for some proper food on the way back down the M6.
I'm sorry Crown and Mitre, staying there was horrible.
Not only would the manager not honour the free cancellation that would have been in place the hour before, they’ve advised that the rooms need to be changed to executive rooms and hiked up the prices.
Absolutely shocked that in these uncertain times that the hotel would rather take a risk of the high fines for households mixing than waive a much smaller fee.
Disappointed that myself and other members of the booking will have to now pay full price for weekend that will never happen.
Can safely say it’s clear to see hotels who value customers - and this clearly isn’t one.
Is definitely an older hotel, creaky floorboards, and old style trimmings. We stayed in a superior room, spacious, two twin beds together to make a double. the bed was comfortable enough for a decent night’s sleep. Nice bathroom with bath and overhead shower which was powerful. Room was warm, even with windows left open at night, a fan was needed as it was a warm evening. Relatively clean compared to other reviews I had read.
We ate in the Mitre bar for tea, food was ok, nothing to write home about and we wished we had tried the Italian across the road. Drinks were expensive, £5.50 for a Coca Cola. The cleaners need to pay attention to detail here, cobwebs under the side table legs etc. some of the tub chairs need some TLC.
Overall it was a pleasant stay, car park space limited, but there is an underground car park in short walking distance which is manned 24/7 and was reasonably priced. We would stay again if we visited Carlisle.
Breakfast however was much better. The selection was good. The food was constantly filled up so the hot elements of the breakfast were actually hot, unlike in some other hotels we have stayed where it’s a help yourself style.
The staff were lovely and welcoming.
Long story short, mam and have now booked into the Travel Lodge who have bent over backwards to provide them with zll the disabled amenities that were were promised from The Crown and Mitre at £600 cheaper.
I would not recommend The Crown and Mitre to znyone, especially if they suffer with any disabilities. Disgusting!
Zoe Johnson.
Arriving at the hotel to find that food and drink was available was an absolute bonus.
The car park is not the biggest but I was able to squeeze my vehicle in. I wasgiven a room in the annexe which was more than satisfactory. Nice and cosy nice comfy bed and with tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits.
I ate in the bar which had socially distanced tables about the place. Food was from the bar menu and my choice of Cumberland Sausage ring on mash peas and parsnip shavings was comfort food personified. I was able to order from the bar which again, I didn't think was permissable. All served by the one lady who worked non stop to provide all diners with their food and drink. The lady was in fact the manager working tirelessly to look after the guests.
A good night sleep followed. Breakfast was in the main dining room and was via table srvice. One of the nicest full English breakfasts I've had. Plenty of hot cofee, toast and preserves.
The hotel is a large place which because of the restrictions was strangely quiet, but all staff worked hard to make guests feel welcome.
Thank you.
