We decided to eat here as a celebration of my wife’s birthday. We dined outside under the canopy of the Oak Room. We were seated and then left. Eventually a drinks order was taken, no Prosecco by the glass would you believe and a terrible gin menu of Tanquery , Gordon’s or Bombay Sapphire. Only French rose by the glass so my wife eventually went for a rose champagne, this duly arrived after a prompt from myself and after the starters arrived. Some amuse bouche’s arrived which was a nice touch along with some slices of white baguette and butter. I had salmon 3 ways (gravlax, smoked and seaweed ) all tough and tasteless to me. My wife had a tasting trio of scallop, gruyere fritter and a tempura prawn, delicious apparently. Mains was calves liver with mash and pancetta with a side of summer vegetables very delicious I must say, whilst my wife had sea bass and samphire with a side of deep fried artichoke all very good according to my wife. At this point we gave up on dessert as the service was so slow we couldn’t bear to sit there much longer so we had a coffee and at the same time asked for the bill. Whilst the servers were very pleasant service was terribly slow. What we had took 2 hours 40 minutes although very nice the slowness of the service detracted from the experience. It’s certainly not cheap £171 was the total. I think very expensive and would have expected better service. Nice for a celebration.

As much as we love the George and as much as I acknowledge that most establishments have raised their menu prices I think they have gone a step too far. It was always a cut above in terms of service and quality but with starters around the £20 mark and mains at the £30-£40 mark (before you add any sides or drinks) it ranks among the priciest of restaurants. In addition it’s about time they opened the front door from the main road. No call for that barrier any more.

Dropped in for 2 coffees on journey home. Lovely setting but felt £5.25 each was rather expensive! Coffee nothing special. Service slow by different staff. Will not be visiting again at these prices or recommending to others.

We ate in the Oak Room. Traditional "Olde English" setting. The food, service and ambiance were marvellous. Food beautifully presented. The hand dived scallops were cooked to translucent perfection. The Herdwicke rack of lamb so tasty. Good selection of quality wines with a "fair" mark up policy. The more expensive the wine the lower the % mark up. Congratulations to all at the George. Great to see the restaurant pretty full on a Monday. Prices a little on the high side, but you get what you pay for.

I have been dining at the George for over 20 years but the standard in the restaurant has gone down since the pandemic. Prices are up and portions are smaller. I appreciate that businesses have suffered due to Covid, but I'm not happy that they're ripping their customers off.
