My husband bought me tickets for Darlington Hippodrome for Christmas so thought we would make a day/night of it and booked a night at the hotel. We were lucky enough to get a parking space in the hotel car park and were getting by a lovely lady on reception our room wasn't ready but we were early so sat and had a drink in the bar while waiting, not over priced which was nice. When our room was ready we went up we were on upper 4th floor which you haf to get 2 lifts to but it's not a major issue. The room was basic but clean and had everything you would need including hairdryer, iron and ironing board and a safe. The location of the hotel is perfect right in the centre and only 5 min walk to the Hippodrome. The only complaint I have really and it's nothing that the hotel can do anything about, is our room (405), had a church tower behind it and the bells chimed every hour through the night so if you are a light sleeper like myself you hear it 🙁 not sure if you can hear it on the other side of the hotel maybe ask the question when booking, other than that we had a lovely stay the staff were friendly and the hotel was clean and comfortable in an ideal location we would definately visit again.

The hotel is centrally located in Darlington, so all of the town centre is within walking distance it also has on site parking.
It is a new modern hotel that uses the old Kings Hotel facade, and the entrance is now on Priestgate.
The room allocated to us was up on the 3rd floor, it was spacious, clean and overlooked a roof, unfortunately this roof also had an aircon/air extraction unit that was buzzing away loudly.
After informing the desk, we were moved to a 2nd floor room which was bijoux in comparison to the 1st room but thankfully was quiet. The WC facilities were even tighter, I would say if you have a larger frame the WC would become difficult to use.
We ate in the hotel the first night, the menu while not extensive is adequate and the food tasty.
The bed was comfortable and assisted a good night's rest.
Breakfast was good giving all the normal choices.
The only fly in the ointment is the "new" computer system that had us booked in for three days, with two breakfasts, but had us down as a no show for day one (including breakfast) so when we appeared at the dining room on day two, we were informed we weren't booked! So we got a really good breakfast in the Juniper Tree, Grange St ( two breakfasts for £15).
After speaking with the front desk and receiving an apology with a refund we left.
Would I recommend this hotel, yes definitely, it did what it advertised and apart from a small glitch did well.

This is my third stay at the Kings Hotel for business use. I travel extensively through work and have quite a bit of experience at staying away from home, even during the COVID-19 restrictions.

My view of this hotel is that it is entirely adequate. Its rooms are bright and clean, and redecorated relatively recently. There's no air conditioning (in the rooms I've stayed in, at least) and I've always been woken by the clock tower bell which the hotel is close to. If you have your room window open as well you can receive a sizeable amount of noise from the streets outside.

But the rooms are comfortable and contain everything I need for a stay through work. There's coffee and tea making stuff, easy access to wifi, an ironing board and iron, as well as a fan, in each room. Clean and modern ensuite bathrooms, and plenty of plug sockets. Staff are very pleasant and eager to help.

The car park, however, is a nightmare! It's small and spaces aren't guaranteed. I had to try parking a Mondeo estate in it once and, trust me, that isn't for the faint hearted! Even once you've managed to get your car into a slot, you'll often find that door mirrors will catch on pillars that are on the corner of most spaces. It's free, though, and other car parks are close by.

I've eaten evening meals in the restaurant twice and wouldn't recommend. I found both meals to be underwhelming. Not badly priced, but not terribly exciting or inspired. If I have time now and haven't arrived too late, I'll take a short walk across the square to some excellent little restaurants covering a wide range of cuisines. Current fave is Tre Amici. Great value, excellent food and brilliant atmosphere.

So, in sum, I've stayed in the Kings Hotel a number of times and will likely have a need for accommodation in Darlington again. Would I stay here next time? Yes. Its location is great, and the rooms are OK. I won't eat here any more if I can, and will only bring the smallest of cars for the car park! They've done a great job with COVID-19 and all the complexities that brings.

Dear T5672FGmattb, thank you for taking the time to share your detailed review. We are delighted with your feedback on our COVID procedures and it is very re-assuring to hear this from our valued guests. We do not have air conditioning in any of our bedrooms and we are sorry that you are finding the limited menu below your expectations, however we are pleased to be able to inform you that we have a new Head Chef commencing with us on 1st November and new menus will be in place very soon after that date. Whilst we cannot alter the complimentary on-site car parking, the Cornmill car park with plus 400 spaces (currently open from 7am - 7pm) is only a one minute walk from the hotel. We do hope to be able to welcome you back again and have the opportunity to sample our fourth coming new menus, which will hopefully deliver a 4 or 5 star review from you. Kind regards Gordon Stewart

We booked for 2 nights, check in was ok we were lucky enough to get the last parking space, the car park is not big enough, the capacity being 24 cars.
We had a double room which was small but well laid out in respect
of wardrobe space , electrical sockets and lighting.
If you want a good nights sleep hope that your adjoining rooms
have quiet guests because the walls are paper thin,
Finally housekeeping : On our second day after breakfast( which was good)
the wife spoke to one of the housekeepers in the corridor and asked if
we could have a change of towels or do we have to reuse the excisting ones
she said no we will change them so we placed our dirty towels in the shower cubicle and left.
On our return later we were suprised to find no clean towels.
We then went to reception explaining what had happened and the
gentleman behind the desk said I dont have any here but I will
bring you some up later`they never arrived.
If they have no intention of changing them then fair enough but to
tell us twice we would get clean towels and did not
is a very poor standard of hotel hospitality.

Having travelled for essential work throughout this pandemic we found our usual hotel choices limited. We were surprised to find that Accor hotels stepped up to the mark throughout the UK and were 5* in their approach to sanitation and customer safety. Particularly in the King's Hotel in Darlington where the staff go above and beyond to make sure the patrons are looked after. Last night we observed just what the staff have to go through with certain "customers" ignoring the safety advice. Rules is rules as they say and if you want to keep socialising safely then stick to those rules and keep the staff safe. Well done Kings Hotel and Accor hotels. Now we have found you Accor/Mercure/Ibis will be out first choice when looking for accommodation. See you again very soon. Pools Ltd.

Dear F8842LUfionam, thank you for adding your feedback following your stay at Mercure Darlington Kings Hotel, which makes me a very proud manager indeed. I am delighted that we are delivering positive service whilst balancing with the Government legislation and enhanced safety measures. Of course, I am sharing this and seeing my team in person to highlight the positive impact of their ongoing hard work. It can be challenging to meet everyone's expectations as the ever changing rules can lead to different perceptions of what to do and anticipate; however we will continue to follow all rules with a focus on cleanliness and service. Hope to be able to welcome you back again soon. Kind regards Gordon Stewart

Stayed here on a work trip, initially booked for 2 nights but had to reduce it to one.

Firstly, all the staff were brilliant, helpful, smiley and professional.

The room was clean, plenty of plug sockets to charge phones/tablets and ipads. Although the static electric from my shoes could have charged them wirelessly after walking 17 miles and taking 2 different elevators to the other side of the building to get to my room.

The bathroom was like stepping back into the 80s, and the shower curtain made me feel like I hadn’t showered just from looking at it! (Maybe that came from the 80’s??)

We had to have our evening meal in the bar as the restaurant wasn’t open. I ordered the spicy chicken burger, unfortunately the chicken was rubbery and slimy, so I ended up having a brioche bun with a slice of tomato and left over melted plastic cheese from the chicken, with a side of fries. Could’ve been a one off so I won’t judge it on the chicken.

When it was time to go to sleep, I turned off the bedside light expecting darkness… this is where the real issues began. I was graced with the presence of what can only be described as a waypoint marker for the International Space Station. My entire room was illuminated green from a ridiculously bright LED in the ceiling. So bright that when you close your eyes it’s equally as green. No sleep was had on this evening, literally none. Nish, Yada, Zero.
Safe to say the meeting the day after was interesting, and also still slightly green from the hours of exposure to the military grade LED.

I read another review that had a response stating that they had resolved the green light issue. Unfortunately this is incorrect as we stayed 5 days later and had 4 rooms, each with a runway marker lamp in the ceiling.

Breakfast was delicious, and piping hot.

Hope this helps 👍🏻

On arrival at the hotel we managed to get one of the limited carpark spaces, we entered via the bar which was less than inviting. While checking in at reception a gentleman came out of the adjacent lift with a full size supermarket trolley which was loaded half full of dirty plates and other crockery! After navigating the strange corridor and lift set up to our room on the third floor we were met with a very strong smell of damp, our room was the same. The room was hot and stuffy so I turned the radiator down and tried to open the window to find they are painted shut behind secondary glazing and no air con. We decided to get some drinks at the bar and then come back to shower before our included evening meal, the barmaid was friendly and welcoming and drinks were ok. Back in the room the bathroom was tired and dated with lino coming away in places and dirty looking, the shower was poor. Our room had stains on the walls and the bed was so uncomfortable. Then to dinner......we made our way to the "restaurant" which overlooks the town square, music was blaring out and disco lights were on above us at our table! We waited for some time before we we're asked if we'd like a drink all the while not knowing what meal plan we were allowed in the deal we had purchased. The menu was limited and when our starters arrived clearly frozen. The main course followed and was not much better. Back in the room that evening we were met by a noisy night thanks to the local revellers and boy racers, not mentioned in the hotel features was the quarter hour and hourly chime from the bells of the local church! Not forgetting the flock of pigeons that roost on the window sills at the front of the hotel! Breakfast.....we had a great fresh cooked hot breakfast and the young waiter that was serving us was polite and attentive! Would not recommend staying here!

Hi Matt, Thanks for your feedback. Although I understand you did not enjoy your overall stay with us, I would like to thank you for your acknowledgment of some of the positive aspects of your stay such as our attentive and friendly staff and our hot breakfast offering. We can only apologise if the facilities and features of the hotel did not meet your expectations on this occasion. As we have a very central town-centre location, there can sometimes be noise we’re unable to control such as the chimes from the clock tower located nearby, the cooing of pigeons, or external noise from non-residents. Please do rest assured if we were able to address those factors then we would of course do so. We will certainly raise your comments regarding your room décor and any unpleasant smells in the room / corridor for further investigation with our housekeeping and maintenance teams, and we thank you for bringing this to our attention so that we can work towards resolving any issues going forward. Although we are disappointed your experience did not match the high standards we always strive to achieve, we are grateful for your honest feedback. If you’d like to share any further comments or discuss anything in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Enjoyable stay. Room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. We did manage to get a space in the carpark which took out the hassle of finding an alternative car park. There is a handy entrance from the carpark straight into the bar and reception is just after that. The hotel is in an ideal location right in the centre of town. All the staff were friendly and helpful although it was a bit chaotic at breakfast, due I'm sure to them trying to run it on lowest staff numbers. As a result, our breakfast went to another table to people who came into the breakfast room after us, we were in breakfast for over an hour and my wife was nearly late for work. Other than that though we had an enjoyable stay.

So when we got to the hotel and was given our door cards it took us at least 20 minutes to find the room because the room numbers are all over the place I then try to call call my friend but there was no signal inside the hotel thought it was hitting miss whether or not we bump into each other between the landings.
The second problem we had was the air conditioning or should I say the lack of it the room was stifling hot and unbearable to stay in don't know how we did it.
The third problem was the green emergency light which during the night kept us awake to the point where we had to ask to sleep in another room.
The 4th problem was a shower there was no cold running water to get a drink or even to have have a cool shower even the cold water tap on the shower was very warm no matter how long you ran it for.
The only good thing about this hotel was the staff whoever owns this hotel needs to look at upgrading the rooms especially with aircon and maybe think about re numbering the rooms.
Because of these problems we will not be staying here again.

Very tired hotel in need of refurbishment

Upon entering our room we were greeted with the smell of damp which we later realised was coming from the bathroom which had a broken extractor fan.
The shower worked intermittently hot then cold then hot again.
Bath too small for anyone other than a child.
Worktop looked like it had been ripped off paint all chipped around it.
Elevators feel like they’re about to break at any moment lights flicker & they make strange noises.
The hotel is a maze if your on one of the upper floors.
Car park small only 20 or so spaces and hard to find.

Worst part was being woken up at 8:25am by housekeeping to ask when we would be leaving as they wanted to clean the room even though checkout isn’t till 11am!
Complained to reception about being rudely awoken and didn’t even get an apology! the receptionist just kept saying I’ll talk to house keeping.

Overall I wouldn’t recommend anyone to stay here spend a little more and check in at the premier inn just up the road I wish I did.

Hotel scruffy and useless staff

From what I recall you can easily fit up to 8 people in each of the 2 lifts. I'd suggest you contact the hotel with dimensions and I'm sure they'll confirm if the lifts are large enough for you.
