We checked into Bergas Guesthouse the evening we arrived in Iceland to wait for our COVID test results. We chose to walk from the airport (about 4km) down the path leading to town! It was lovely. We were immediately greeted warmly by the owner. Knowing that we could not go to any restaurants or shops until the results were in, she helped us order pizza to the room and even went and picked up a few simply supplies for us from the grocery store! The room was clean and comfortable for our family of five and had a small mini fridge, toaster and microwave to meet our needs. The location was super, and we enjoyed walking in the lupins on the rocky coast while waiting for our results! The owner and staff were so kind and helpful that we chose to stay here on our last night before leaving the country! Once again upon arrival, we felt like we had come home! We were again greeted with kindness and hospitality. I would stay here again and again if we ever go back to this beautiful country!

Our flight was cancelled due to a storm over Reykjavik and Keflavik, and were put up here courtesy of EasyJet.

The manager and the staff were all extremely friendly, as well as making us all feel safe and welcome. The manager even drove in 80mph+ winds/snow storm to make sure we were all fed in the evening, despite turning up late!

The accommodation is a perfect location by the airport. There’s not too much going on around there except for a few shops and a restaurant, but it is very practical if you want to see the Northern Lights.

The rooms were of good size for couples and had all you needed in terms of power, fridge, kettle, WiFi and a TV. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a practical place to stay near to the airport with staff that make you feel at home!

P.S. Hope you get over to see Liverpool soon! 🔴🇮🇸

I was very surprised at what a lovely hotel this was. Very clean and new. Staff were very helpful. Amazing restaurant and scenery within easy walking distance. Downtown area with numerous restaurants and shops are a 15-20 minute walk my wife and I both loved this place!

Had guesthouse room reserved months in advance for our Iceland trip, when Bergas Guesthouse canceled it 3 days before our arrival, saying it rented out the entire house to the Government for the entire year. Three days notice???, like they did not know much before that time, and forget they had a contract with us to rent the room. But hey they hoped it was not an inconvenience. Joke experience and we were left with trying to find housing while already away from home! Expedia/Hotel.com was of zero help also, basically said, oh you can try to book somewhere else. Gosh thanks, I had not thought of that.

I stayed at Bergás guesthouse for four nights during a covid quarantine. The room was really nice and spacious. Up on arrival I met with the owner that was working there and it is clear to me that she operates the guestouse out of passion. I got really great service and felt welcome and valued. I would definetly recommend staying there and if I ever need a room again in Keflavik this will be my first choice!

Thanks!

Such a great place! The ones having the place were the sweetest 😍 The best place ever to quarantine! Rooms were nice and convenient with a small kitchen, a TV and private bathroom. Placed close to nice trails, good take away and grocery stores near by. Close to the airport.

About 10 minutes drive to the airport.
Facility/hallways look a bit tired but our room was clean and well appointed. Very easy and free parking.
A great spot if you need a place to stay for an evening upon arrival or departure.

So....Iceland has a problem. Thanks to a brilliant marketing strategy by Icelandair and stunning natural beauty, Iceland has become THE go-to place for few-night stopovers for North Americans and Europeans alike. This "tourist problem" is fantastic for the local economy and is definitely well deserved. Iceland is simply indescribably spectacular and unlike any place that I've ever been before.

Unfortunately, the hoards of jet-lagged visitors has resulted in a big island with a small population converting nearly everything that remotely resembles a hotel into a "guesthouse" or an "inn." Bergas Guesthouse falls into this trap. It has no business being a guesthouse and it definitely have no business gaining your patronage.

Bergas is what happens when you take a location that should not be a hotel and turn it into one without any direction or consideration of style or taste. It's out for the unsuspecting tourist buck. And, with me, it got exactly that!

I don't know what Bergas was in a previous life before the Icelandic tourist boom, but I suspect that it was something along the lines of "pool hall with shady apartments upstairs." That's certainly the vibe that I got staying here. The hotel was clean, yes. The hotel was convenient to the airport, yes. But, it just gave off this dumpy batchelor-pad aura that was really off-putting-- particularly at the price point of $150 per night!

Everything is sterile and white. Everything is tiled. There is no carpet. There is no color. There is no ambiance. The towels are thin. The linens are basic. Everything is the bare-bones minimum required to call yourself a guesthouse and nothing more.

Case in point-- there's not toilet paper roll holder in the bathroom. Only toilet paper is required to be a guesthouse, apparently. The little roll holder next to the toilet? That's just superfluous decoration. Want a continental breakfast with you room? Out of luck-- that's above the bare minimum requirement for "guesthouse"! Like to watch TV? Hard to do without a TV in the room. Sadly, I'm not exaggerating here. What hotel skimps so much on amenities that they decide that they don't need a toilet paper roll holder or a TV!!? Apparently, Bergas Guesthouse.

Outside of the amenities (or lack-there-of), the styling is plain as plain can be. Remember when you moved into your first place and you didn't realize yet that you should hang TWO curtains on the window rod so that your window hangings not only kept out the street light, but also looked like you knew something about living on your own? Remember when you learned that when you buy curtains, you should get them bigger than the length of the window so that the fold and flow stylishly rather than tautly cover just the window and nothing more? Me too. Bergas is still figuring these basic decorating tips out.

Honestly, the closest description that I can give of the room is a dumpy batchelor pad. Everything from the basic bed, to the basic bathroom fixtures, to the basic studio kitchen just shouted "I just moved out of mom's basement and have my own place now". Good for the guy who's not crashing on mom's couch anymore.....but not really what I'm looking to come back to for the night after exploring a place as spectacular as Iceland!

This place just had no style, no class, no comfort, and no business banking in on unsuspecting tourists who want to see an amazing country and take a dip in a hot spring. I will give it credit for being clean and being convenient to the airport, because Bergas did both of those perfectly. However, it's 4 1/2* rating on TripAdvisor is completely undeserved.

I've definitely stayed in worse hotels, and many of them. However, most of them cost me $50-60 per night and not $150. Iceland is a very expensive country to visit. For your trip to Iceland, I'd recommend doing yourself a favor and spending a little bit more to stay in a place that understands that a guesthouse is more than just a toilet and a bed.

I wish I had....

Brilliant stay in the guesthouse with friendly company from the owner who was always helpful and kind to us during our stay. Very clean, tidy and welcoming! Very close to the airport and only a short drive into the town which was great. Overall, very, very impressed with our stay and the guesthouse! Definitely one to recommend!

We rented a car. Even if they don't pick you up at the Bergas, you should be able to take a taxi to a local pick up point.

On a good day you are meant to be able to see them from the harbour which is a very short walk. There is also tours which you can book from the hotel, I couldn’t find any info online before hand. As long as you realise your chances of seeing them are slim. No matter what you do! Gods luck.

I'd suggest you to inform the reception of Bergas Guesthouse about your arrival time. You can get a taxi from the airport to there as it is only a 5-6 minutes ride. Have fun in Iceland!

What is the best way to get to you from Keflavík airport?

I would choose a taxi over driving yourself. All Icelandic cars are stick shift, so you're out of luck if you can't drive a manual. It can be complicated in the dark, although it's not far from the airport, if you are just staying overnight.

Is this hotel an ok base for exploring Iceland or only for stop over for airport? Thanks
Answer from Terence Z

There's not much to see in Reykjavik, and you can't explore Iceland from Keflavik. Even seeing the south, you'd spend too much time driving. We spent a week, based in Selfoss. There is a lot to see in the north, but that is a five-hour one-way drive. We found a very nice cottage about an hour from Lake Myvatn (cheaper than nearer to the lake) and spent another week here.
