Detailed Reviews
If You want some quiet hotel room where you can rest noiseless, forget this hotel. Otherwise you can find yourself (almost) sharing your hotel room with yours noisy neighbours. On the other hand, the staff can't be more friendly and useful. Really nice and professional people. Breakfast is OK.

Hotel grounds and swimming good.
Rooms very dated but clean and bed comfy.
Not very dog friendly...the dog can stay in your room for a extra 20 euros. Have to sign a disclaimer. Dogs only allowed outside not on the inside areas to eat ie bar, inside terrace.
Only one member of staff friendly and helpful, others rude and standoffish.

As usual the hotel was well run, staff friendly and helpful. Meals always good, a nice variety at breakfast and the meals at night very well presented and tasty. The rooms spacious and very clean. I would recommend them to anyone looking for value for money.

The hotel has lots of potential but it all goes down the drain because of the lack of higiene, mainly on the bedrooms.
Even after we talked with the reception, the following days were the same.
The installation, the pool, outside courts were all ok, but the cleaning crew has to be adjusted, both the the rooms and in the breakfast lobby

Not nosy hotel, calm ambiance and warm welcome. Too simple breakfast. Only one problem, noisy room air conditioner, but not necesary because of the outside temperature during the night . You can sleep with the window open

Rooms are outdated and need refurbishment. The airco / heather was not possible to adjust to a certain temperature as it gave only hot air even when it was set on 10 degrees. Honestly speaking not worth the 4 stars anymore.

Very friendly staff. Due to covid restrictions, the hotel experience is always poor. Although the staff has endeavored to make your stay a pleasant one, the truth is that it was an overpriced bed and breakfast.

Dear tripadvisor, the following account will describe our experience at the
Novotel (Setubal) which relates to our stay in May 2011.
Read fully before you decide to stay here. We made this Hotel fully aware of our
comments below.
First though we would like to say that we had high, in fact, very high
expectations indeed when we decided to book with Novotel especially in the face
of our previous experience with Novotel in Paris where we stayed in for 3
nights in December last year during the Christmas period as our flight from
Nairobi to London Heathrow was re-routed to Orly due to the snow and adverse
weather conditions Europe was experiencing at the time. Therefore, we
considered that the Novotel per say would be a facility which we would naturally
take up from thereafter given the hospitality and comfort we experienced allied
with excellent facilities and general standards of cleanliness and health &
safety focussed provision and care.
Now, when we decided to book this hotel in Setubal, Portugal, it was partly due
to the positive experience we had in France, but also because it looked quite
good from the pictures on the website which displayed its green surroundings and
well maintained gardens. Unfortunately only the latter was fitting. What we
encountered when we set foot in our room was a very different picture
altogether. The room [non-smoking], as we do not smoke and we travel with our 2
year old son, was tired looking and the carpet was disgusting as so did many of
the carpets I was showed upon request.
The carpets were old and
stained and certainly not fit for purpose.
In addition to this and quite concerning is the fact that the room was not
fitted with a smoke alarm. When I raised this issue with a member of staff in reception he disinterested and upon insistence advised he would take me to
another room (this time downstairs on the ground floor - note we were on level
2 to examine if the room was fitted with a smoke alarm.
Staff advised not being sure if the room or indeed any of the rooms were fitted with a smoke
Alarm.
We were told that our room was non-smoking so it wouldn't have one. Is rationale for the
room not having a smoke alarm fitted essentially because we were in a
non-smoking room?
Moreover, we had mentioned such concern to more staff in reception
we were advised that our room had a smoke alarm fitted in the ceiling and that we shouldn’t worry as there was one there, yet we knew there was NONE, absolutely none we had seen or been able to locate.
he gingerly retorted: "don't worry, there's one there.
We felt that we were given false assurances and information contrary to what
we had been strongly highlighted.
I was asked to follow staff to one of the rooms downstairs (which I did) but unfortunately staff was unable to locate where the alarm was located. Obviously he did not know because there was NONE
fitted.
Furthermore, when escorting me to the
room there was no person centred focus and the empathy that was much needed to
reassure the guest. These were absent. I was made to follow staff who were walking quite in front of me (some 3-4 metres away)
and speaking from quite afar naturally given the distance. To be perfectly
honest I found this to be disrespectful and felt as the whole exercise was more of a favour. We believe that our concerns should have merited the utmost attention and focus. Such response made us feel that our concerns were being trivialised, and as such
we remained concerned, and still are, even after checking out, for the sake and
welfare of the guests and staff on site alike.
Quite scary as well was the fact that the lift we were using needed to be
serviced as the date on it had expired, and equally concerning was the fact that
the fire extinguishers on our floor had no expiry date nor was it visible to us
when it was last checked by expert professionals in respect of its
servicing/maintenance. So, in summary, the Health & Safety practice that we
witnessed was quite shambolic and totally unacceptable. It is irresponsible at best and could endanger life at worst.
Furthermore, it is unthinkable to offer guests services and facilities in situ
such as a mini bar/fridge, television, hairdryer, kettle, and
an air conditioning system without due consideration
being given to smoke alarm(s) or carbon monoxide detector(s) being fitted in the
bedroom(s)should these be/become faulty or malfunctioning which could potentially lead to smoke
inhalation or fatal emissions escaping from air conditioning units.
In conclusion, we have travelled exhaustively all over the world and where we
may have found the odd shortcomings, nothing yet has matched what we have
encountered and succinctly described above. Health & Safety is a key ingredient
vital to good and effective functioning of any organisation, be it in the public
or private arena, and more so to those businesses that accommodate guests, and
especially if some of these guests are children or infants or indeed those
others that are frail, elderly or infirm.
Dear tripadvisor we trust you to give it very careful consideration to all of
the above.
