Detailed Reviews
Really excited to stay here but fell short of out expectations. Arrive and was greeted by a friendly guy and sent to a desk where the receptionist promptly pick up the phone , she continued with her conversation for a while and we stood and watch not one word of I will not be a moment. So after a while she spoke over our heads and told this friendly man to put us back in the queue. Very unprofessional. But we were given another receptionist and the man apologised , for keeping us waiting , Anita or Annette I think and she could not do enough for us . Spoke in Dutch and English arranged a taxi for our evening out. What a difference
Got to our room and this was fine too .
We wanted more than the coffee machine in the room , our experience of these machines are awful and that proved the point again, Yuk.
Captains Lounge was busy found some seats and waited , not enough staff on , no acknowledgement eventually we put our hands up and we ordered. Cappuccino but what we got was pure foam and hardly any coffee in a small cup and at 3.75 euro this was not good enough.
We asked if we could pay by one of the waiters , told see my colleague, we asked were , how it’s our first time here . Pointed over there . Not good enough.
Onwards to the Lido Grill for a meal. Absolutely awful. Firstly we were placed under a ventilator and as I suffer with the cold , I asked I’d we could be moved. No sympathy at all no we are busy. . Mine is a illness and so I sat cold for a meal. Finally the meal. It was horrible it was cold. Plate cold cold and overcooked fish. The table next door also spoke about the meal being cold. Yuk
Breakfast was an excellent selection of hot and cold but the English Breakfasts was yet again cold. I placed my hand under the lamps to see what heat was given out and they where not heating food at all.
We felt very disappointed , really chose somewhere else which is a pity because it has the makings of a great attraction, but major improvements in service and food.

I love SS Rotterdam and have stayed here many times. It is sumptuous and really worthy of a visit. The staff are extremely friendly and service-oriented. You have to keep in mind that this is a ship experience and the rooms are not hotel rooms but more like cabins. We decided to go a bit upmarket this time and book a family room as they are a bit bigger. We walked in and the room had no windows! Of course I went back to reception and asked for another room. The receptionist, really obliging and lovely, pointed out that it states this on the website. I took a look and it says "inside room." If you are a frequent cruise-taker then you would know what this meant presumably but it did not register with me when I booked as I took it to mean that it was on a specific side of the ship, as opposed to an internal cabin. I checked the Dutch and the wording is ambiguous too. As said, we got a new room and all was sorted but do beware that if you pay more for a family room, it will have no windows and you will walk into a pitch black room.

Dear Bry K, Thank you very much for your kind review on your experiences with us! It is true that our family rooms do not have windows, but are a bit bigger. For those who come to visit us with family; you can also book two outside cabins (with windows) next to eachother. I hope to welcome you again soon for a visit on board! Kind regards, Shiftleader Front Office | Kelly

The Steam Ship Rotterdam is a well preserved relic of the glorious cruises and ocean crosses of the sixties and seventies of the previous century. It is a living museum full of situational art specifically created for the ship. Now permanently moored as a hotel, the ship features a Rotterdam water taxi platform, a sun terrace with small swimming pool, and the popular Lido restaurant. During the Corona pandemic, they serve American style takeaway food in front of the ship.

I attended a conference and asked the reception desk to just order a taxi and this is what happened:
I asked the reception desk, if they could call me a taxi to Centraal. Instead of a taxi a chauffeur service arrived, which was not recognizable for me immediately. He charged 30 Euros instead of a normal taxi rate ( drove without taxi Meter switching on, although asked several times!). Additionally a lady, also ordered a taxi, was driving with me, as the second taxi never showed up. The driver then charged 30 euros each, means 60 for a drive to Centraal. This is rip off per excellence, I suppose that also the hotel will have some profit from these drives. Why can’t you order a official taxi, which would be much faster at the location and is going with the meter, when asked for a taxi! I didn’t request a VIP Chauffeur service!! Very disappointing, I will let know all travellers to order a taxi by themselves, otherwise they will get ripped off!!!

Very helpful staff, and very friendly, including the English man who works in the bar (Skaggy?). We had a wonderful stay and loved the quirky nature of the hotel, and the restaurant was lovely too. Would definitely recommend - the rooms are massive and very comfortable. Will return. The water taxi round trip ride was particularly convenient and cheap from the stop next to the ship.

The SS. Rotterdam is a beautifully renovated steamship of the Holland America Line that sailed until year 2000. Only part of it is accessible as a hotel/restaurant, but a tour allows you to discover more: the stylish theater and smoking room, the decks and the captain's quarters. The cabins are spacious and comfortable. The terrace at the rear is very much enjoyable for drinks and for watching the sunset. Nice buffet-style breakfast. Dinner in the Lido Grill is good but not great. Good service. There is a parking right at the entrance of the ship, which makes it very easy for boarding.

If you would like to experience a true ocean liner from the golden age of travel, there are very few left in the world. The SS Rotterdam is a gem of mid-century design, and the best surviving liner after the RMS Queen Mary in California. If you are staying in Rotterdam, I would highly recommend the SS Rotterdam. True you could tour the ship without staying on it, but why not enjoy the full experience? Our room had two portholes with views of the city and the room was surprisingly spacious, with a desk area and little dining table. The only peculiar thing about the room is that the bed comprised exposed stacked mattresses. Odd that there were no bed skirts or some other covering. But otherwise very comfortable. We did not do breakfast/dinner on the ship as it was rather pricy, and not particularly a special grand dining room. (The old main dining room seemed to be reserved for special events. ) It would also be nice if the indoor pool were restored for guest use, along with the sauna. But all in all, very glad we stayed on this grand dame.

Awful experience:
1. Unesufully far from the town centre without cost-effective transport to the really living neighbours.
2. The "ship experience" is inconsistent and not worth the costs for the room.
3. Some details are typical of a low-level hotel. For instance, in the breakfast lounge no toasting machines are available.
4. The reception desk is a mess: more than half an hour queuing with only one person before us.
5. No clear information at the desk nor on demand.
6. Unjustified extra charge of euros 150 for deep cleaning of the room.
AVOID IT !!!

Thank you for your review and your feedback. SS Rotterdam is very close to the city centre if you take a watertaxi, we have a boardingplatform on the B Deck and in less then 10 minutes you will be in the centre. Sorry to hear that your stay wasn't according to your wishes. We do offer service with the check-in and give our guests information, that's why sometimes it can take some more time. You can contact us if you feel that the charge is unjustified. However we do hope to welcome you again in the future.

Their high-tea offering was quite exceptional. Champagne starter; small soup; well made sandwiches; lots of sweet delicacies; scones (including clotted cream); and lots of very fine tea. (Coffee was mentioned at the end, but we were finished by that point!). Service was outstanding too, attentive yet not in your face. All in a pleasant restaurant with big windows offering river views even if you're sitting in the middle (as we were).
Whilst this (5-star) review is for the high-tea, it's worth mentioning the rest of the ship. We got there an hour earlier hoping to look around this old ship but that demands paying for a tour. How do they hope to wow people and persuade them to come and eat / stay? Just a simple self-guided tour with signage to a few key areas would be enough.
PS: tbh, the parts of the ship that we did see didn't look very ship-like anymore - rather a glorified hotel (which is what it is). I would have liked greater attention given during the refit to preserving some of the nautical themes.

A quirky experience on the SS Rotterdam where I stayed two IG hats for a conference event.
“This was the former flagship of the Holland America Line is now permanently anchored in Rotterdam and full of history.”
A feeling of the 50’s for sure and a slight hint of Agatha Christie on board :)
Rooms are basic as they were in the days, with all amenities.
Caution with the wifi which is slow (approx 4Mb) so if you need to make some video calls then make sure you can hook up to your phone for speed.
Restaurant on the upper deck was nice with great smoked ribs.
My cabin only had portholes (that do not open) and were extremely dirty hiding the little view I had so it did feel a little uncomfortable at times.
Overall a very nice stay!

Hello! My bed was actually a single bed, as they are real ship cabins! So I assume they would have two singles in a cabin but yes please email them they are very responsive too! :-)
There is a big car park opposite the ship.
We just booked at reception as we arrived on the ship. They have tours going through out the day
