Detailed Reviews
I stayed for one night in a cold and rainy February and it was an excellent choice. It was a very comfortable stay and we were made very welcome by the friendly staff. It was an ideal location for myself and a work colleague since we could walk to the office we were visiting on business. Then in the evening, we could walk to the nearby Leidseplein district to choose a restaurant. The hotel is probably not to everyone's taste especially if you are looking for modern furnishings and fittings but it is certainly comfortable and a great place to relax. Our Dutch work colleague was astounded at the price we paid in the middle of Amsterdam. The main city bus and tram routes are right outside the front door so easy to get into the centre of Amsterdam and also to connect with the airport.

This hotel is well placed for the museums. After booking, I received a very helpful "How to get there" email and, although I walked from the Centraal Station, the 397 bus passes the door and would be a very good way of reaching the hotel from the airport. Forget this hotel if you don't like stairs. The hotel states that it does not have a lift but, after the first 10 stairs to the door, there are another 40 or so to reception. However, once you are there, you are in a delightful hotel.
The breakfast room, where there is tea and coffee all day (with biscuits) is bright and sunny and a room that inspires one to be creative. Whilst here, I should say that the breakfast starts at 0830h. Not a bad breakfast and normal for the Netherlands (no hot food).
My room was at the back and up two more floors (another 38 steps!). Comfortable with a wash basin, desk. Can't remember if there was a TV but I think not. WiFi worked well. Toilet and shower rooms were off the corridor outside. My room was quiet and very light.
The price was good value for summer in Amsterdam and location. The place was very clean. The management were helpful and keen to give advice should one need it (for instance, suggesting places nearby to eat where the locals might go, advising on a local market etc.)
If you are reading this review and want to go to a museum, just a reminder to book on line beforehand. The Van Gogh Museum had a two week waiting list when I was there)

I really liked the place, I could say it's a b&b. Clean, comfortable bed, spacious room, really well located modest breakfast but fresh and tasty. I couldn't ask for more. Friendly and professional service. Definitely recommended.
Thanks a lot and see you soon.

+1
Nice Vintage Vibe, gorgeous Hotel room with great breakfast and very nice staff. The bathroom and toilets are shared though, but they are really clean and close to the rooms. The entrance has very long and steep stairs, so beware if you struggle with getting up stairs.

I've stayed here a couple of times in the last five years and have a sentimental attachment to it. The folks who run it are wonderful, and it's homey and comfy. It's an amazing location, just on the Museumplein, on the tram line two blocks from the Leidseplein. I highly recommend it!

The rooms were horribly dated and there were stains on both the bed sheets and walls. The mattresses sunk in the middle so you had to hold on for dear life when you slept so you wouldn't roll into the middle. The shared toilet was so small your body could nearly touch both sides of the walls when you sat down. This place was extremely noisy and overpriced.

Just beside the Rijks Museum, within walking distance to the Dam and also on a direct bus line to Schiphol Airport (197 to be exact), this place was definitely the right choice. It had tremendously character and had a very personal touch to it. You felt as if you were in someone house. It was so unlike the bland hotels. Staff could not have been nicer. I really loved it.
One thing you need to know is if you are not too steady on your feet or don't like climbing stairs this hotel might not be for you.

When recently in Amsterdam, I considered staying at the Museumzicht for the second half of my trip, based largely on all the glowing reviews I had read online.
I emailed the hotel in advance for a quote, and when I got there I dropped by to take a look at the place. I like to see a place in person before committing to it for a lengthy period: in this case, I am glad I dropped by before reserving.
The hotel is a lovely old building right next to the Rijksmuseum. While initially favorably impressed from the exterior, my actual experience with the hotel was not pleasant.
I rang the bell and walked up a couple of flights of (steep) stairs to the reception area, where I was greeted by a hotel staff member. I explained that I was looking for a room for the next week, and asked to see one before committing. Her reception wasn't exactly welcoming, but it wasn't completely offputting, either... that changed soon after I climbed two more flights of stairs to look at a small single room, though.
She handed me the key and sent me off to look at the room on my own. I spent a couple of seconds taking it in. I sat on the edge of the bed, trying to imagine whether or not I could subsist in a room the size of a broomcloset with the depressing aura of a flophouse for the next week.
Almost immediatley, the staff person -- apparently concerned that I had spent too long in the room -- came bustling in, exuding an air of ill-concealed suspicion. She was obviously put out that I had sat on the corner of the bed and, after making an exaggerated show of straightening a small wrinkle in the bed covering, she ushered me out.
What had started as a luke-warm reception turned downright chilly. In an attempt to lighten the mood, I tried to chat about the weather, the view... anything to establish a positive connection. In return, she accused me of taking advantage of her good will and wasting her time for my "entertainment." If I weren't seriously considering staying there, I certainly could have found better things to do in Amsterdam than walking up four flights of stairs to spend 30 seconds in a depressingly spartan hotel room and be insulted for my interest.
In short, I am incredibly glad that I did not make a reservation at the Museumzicht in advance without seeing the hotel and meeting the staff first!
Completely aside from the attitude problems on the part of the staff, the room I saw was the very definition of sad -- claustrophobic and cheaply furnished with a bare minimum of disposable items. Bathroom facilities in the hallway bordered on unusable due to their liliputian dimensions.
I suspect that doubles are probably much nicer and more livable, but I didn't dare ask to see one, based on the attitude of the staffperson. I certainly would not recommend a single room in this hotel without checking it out first so you know what you are getting into. (A few years ago, this sort of room could have been had for the equivalent of $30 or less per night. It is shocking that it can now command two or three times that, and that it comes with a heaping helping of contempt from the staff, as a bonus.)
Ultimately, I wound up choosing a room in another part of town. For $15 a night more, it was furnished very comfortably, had about five times the space of the Museumzicht's single, and it featured a kitchen with stove and refrigerator, as well as private bath.
It also came with something a lot more valuable: hospitable and welcoming proprietors, who made me feel like a valued guest, rather than like a pariah. In short, you can do a lot better than the Museumzicht for the price.
In all fairness, maybe I caught the staff on a bad day or at an inconvenient time, but I have to say that in decades of traveling the world, from Africa to Europe and South America, I have rarely felt so unwelcome at a hotel.
The staff person attempted to recover a bit as a left, saying that it was "nothing personal" that she had been so suspicous and accusatory... but I don't think anyone would call that a welcoming reception that would entice him/her to stay there.

I really loved my stay here. The location was fabulous, staff were friendly, hotel was clean, breakfast was wholesome.
Only negatives, were massive staircase and being on the top floor was a bit of a trek, although I imagine a lot of places in amsterdam are like this given the architecture. The top floor bathroom facilities were quite small, if you could get the first floor that would be perfect.
If you’re elderly, have problems with stairs or are carrying an extreme amount of heavy luggage, I would probably think twice. But otherwise, an excellent place to stay.

The good news is the location, the staff are friendly and the hotel has real character.
All hotel reviews need to emphasise there are no cheap places to stay in Amsterdam unless you go for "hostel" accommodation with shared facilities. Amsterdam is becoming a very expensive city.
The hotel is located across the road from the museums almost every leisure traveller will want to visit. The 397 bus service stops in front and the fare is 6 Euros. Public transport in Amsterdam doesn't take cash - just cards.
The hotel dates back to the 1880s. Amsterdam has very narrow buildings with very narrow staircases. This is because the property taxes were based on building width. There are steep stairs to the hotel reception. Anyone with any kind of mobility issue is going to struggle. The rooms are small. Like most european hotels built a while ago, there is no air conditioning. There was no TV in my room. The wifi was consistently slow but I was able to watch a bit of Netflix one evening.
You get a basic breakfast in a well-decorated breakfast room. There is free tea/coffee available most of the day from the same room. The hotel is directly beside the tram lines. Trams run until late and clatter by the windows. Shouting drunks occasionally wander by late at night. Its a city centre hotel. Expect a certain noise level.
I was reasonably pleased with what I got. Don't expect any hotel in Amsterdam to be good value. They are all expensive. It's a quirky historic building that is all about the location.
