The Helvetia is really well placed right in the middle of Pisa, very close to the leaning tower but on a quiet street and reasonably priced. It's a good old-fashioned hotel (no lift, no air-conditioning, but large ceiling fans in the rooms) and the staff are friendly and helpful. We requested a room at the very top of the hotel, with a street view, and were given room 27 which was ideal. Dual aspect windows in the bedroom looking out to the rooftops and hills beyond, and another bedroom in the shower room. It's close to some good places for supper, and there is a a little courtyard garden plus locked cupboards if you need to leave you luggage. Recommended.

Location was great but this hotel is very, very basic, much more so than I expected from the photos and other reviews.

There is no lift so I had to carry a large case up 8 flights of stairs to the 4th floor and down again which was not much fun. When I got to the 4th floor and opened the door to my room my heart sank. It was a tiny single with a small bathroom and a shower that barely managed a trickle.

There was a large ceiling fan instead of air con which was noisy during the night and a plug in mosquito repellent plug in the room.

The single bed was comfortable and clean.

My friend had a single room on the 1st floor which was much nicer (for the same price) so if you are booking a single room try to get one on the 1st floor.

If you are looking for somewhere basic and central to stay for 1 night, and you are fit for the stairs, then this could be an option for you. I would not recommend it for a longer stay.

This is a really well-located hotel offering excellent value for money. Our room was perfectly clean, with comfortable beds and good towels. You don’t get many frills but for €100 for the night for 3 of us, so close to a major tourist attraction, I have no complaints at all. It’s also only a 20 min walk from Pisa Central station.

The location can't be beat ....less than a 5 minute walk to the Leaning Tower. And many good restaurants within 5 minutes. We got a room on the 1st floor so the lack of a lift wasn't an issue. Our room faced the road but it was surprisingly quiet, and it was fun to listen to the horse carriages pass by during the day. We stayed 2 nights ... comfortable beds, quiet rooms, and good sleeps! The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is just a plain sort of place, nothing fancy but spotlessly clean. Would definitely stay here again !

Very welcoming and helpful service. The owner was very friendly even with our late arrival due to getting a taxi late while there was a festival in the city.
The rooms were comfortable and clean and we had a restful night. It is a stone’s throw from the Leaning Tower. 😊

This hotel is ideal. Great location right near the tower and a 10minute walk from bus and train station. We stayed in a family room had ensuite. Very clean and tidy rooms made up everyday. Staff very helpful we stayed 3 nights and it was great for a base to travel to Lucca and Florence

Superb location; close to Tower but so easy for all the other wonders of Pisa and easy to walk to train station. Stayed at Helvetia for 7 nights and used as a base for exploring as train availability to Florence, Lucca, Siena and further afield so easy and cheap. This hotel was ideal - it met the 3 "c's" - comfortable, clean and central. This family run budget hotel was a delight and superb value. I would happily return.

For those not afraid of walk-up accommodations, younger and hipper crowd and able to live without air conditioning, look no further!

Excellent value, location ,insider tips, and welcoming and helpful staff!

Free Wi-Fi, inexpensive breakfast arrangement with charming little Coffee Bar - proprietors were very warm and welcoming towards my wife and I when having our breakfast and lunch there! Their father even dropped-us-off in Livorno after sharing with them that we were headed there to see the sun set! No small act of kindness as Livorno happens to be a twenty to thirty minute drive from Pisa!

Cleaning crew even carried our bags down from fifth floor walk-up. Naturally, we tipped them 5 Euros - don't want to give Americans a bad-wrap!

Generally out of character for tourist destinations well focused on optimizing charges, Sheila and JB, Philippine-Italian, who have a great command of the English language and customer service attitude went some ways toward ensuring we had an authentic experience and economical stay in Tuscany.
