Hotel Ilaria and the Residenza dell'Alba are situated in the center of Lucca, within the renaissance walls. What a wonderful hotel! Spotlessly clean, lovely breakfast, open welcoming lounge areas. Free drinks, snacks and prosecco every afternoon and early evening. Helpful, welcoming staff. We had a family room in the annex and it suited us perfectly. The jacuzzi bath was a hit with our daughter! Only tiny negatives were that the jacuzzi on the terrace was rather cool and being in the Annex made it inconvenient to walk across the road in swimwear to use! The second bed is a sofa bed which was OK but two singles would be better than a double for families. Lastly, the route from the station might look short but is not at all easy to walk with cases. Plan on getting a taxi! At breakfast we had to sit away from our daughters on our last day as there were no tables for 4. All tables are for 2 and they will only move them if there are 2 free ones next to each other. I think with family rooms available, some tables for 4 should be too. Lucca is stunningly beautiful. We'd recommend restaurants in the amphitheatre for evening meals - a bit of a walk but Lucca is very safe to walk around in the evenings. The climb up the Torre is a must. We explored most of the city in a day and a half, including riding the circuit of the city walls in a rickshaw. We also went by train to the Cinque Terre which was well worth the trip. We have moved on to Pisa but if we'd known how accessible it was from Lucca we'd have stayed another couple of days at the Ilaria.

What a delightful hotel, such friendly and helpful staff made us feel comfortable from the moment we arrived. Even before we got there, Claudia, Paolo and Ilaria were great at responding to my (many!) questions regarding our stay. The location, just inside the walled city is excellent - all the city's attractions are nearby and the free bicycles provided make it so easy to get everywhere in town. A huge and unexpected bonus was the free snack bar in the afternoons with prosecco on tap from 5pm until 7pm, which made for some very pleasant early evenings making new friends. Breakfast is a simple affair, with fresh fruit, pastries galore and a selectio n of cold meats, bacon, scrambled and boiled eggs. Unlimited freshly-brewed coffe and fresh orange juice to drink, either in the dining area or outside on the airy balcony. Rooms are comfortable and clean, with daily linen changes. The shower could do with being enclosed on all sides, as it was hard not to get the bathroom floor soaking wet, but that's a very minor issue.

Great hotel in Lucca. We stayed in the tower annex and would highly recommend. Room was beautiful. Nice bathroom with comfortable bed. Ideally located to provide quiet relaxation but be within minutes of attractions further inside city walls. Delicious breakfast with serve yourself snacks later in the day. Attentive and friendly service.

A true gem of a small hotel in a lovely little city- just like all the reviews said. We stayed in one of the rooms in the bell tower across the street. The room was spacious and quiet. Breakfast had a great variety of items with regional specialties. The staff was always helpful. I hope we can visit again soon!

[RECEPTION] All staff we interacted with during our stay were highly pleasant. The gentleman at the front desk when we arrived was exceedingly welcoming, going out of his way to ensure our comfort. [ROOM] The room was small, but unique, lovely, and clean. There was a gorgeous window I would have loved to leave open to let in the cool air but unfortunately, being a street level, there was noise from people passing by, so we had to keep it shut and turn on the air conditioning. The bathroom was clean and modern. My sole criticism of the room was the shower. The way it was designed, there seemed to be no way of showering without ending up with water all over the floor. [BREAKFAST] The breakfast area was bright and appealing, and the food was delicious with a variety of options. Staff greeted us when we walked in and prepared fresh drinks for us (espresso for me, tea for my wife), and a second espresso for me on request.

NOW, AS I LOOK BACK on my sweet sojourn in Lucca last week, staying at the HOTEL ILARIA was a wonderful choice. Choosing LUCCA helped me avoid tourist crowds in Italy & the lovely  HOTEL ILARIA, just inside the Medieval walled city on the east-side, made me feel as if I was actually living there for a few days & enjoying at leisure the friendly people & the Italian charm of the neighborhood.  Each day began with the colorful hotel breakfast spread & excellent Italian coffee, served in the hotel's large sun-room, with morning sunshine angling in from the vine-covered glass ceiling. This is where we also met for opening & farewell receptions. The swanky protein-rich breakfast offering sustained me through the days & downstairs in the back the Lobby, Prosecco & snacks awaited us each night when we arrived home from excursions in the Italian countryside.  EVERYTHING is within walking distance in LUCCA & a quick loop up around the tree-lined City Walls is always possible for those with younger knees. Coming home to the HOTEL ILARIA several times a day was such sweet comfort, with its jacuzzi bubbling on the terrace on sunny days & the handsomely renovated charms of my room facing the street. It was decorated in warm Tuscany peach color & cherry woodwork & I  could look across the Lucca Canal to my neighbors' bright terrace gardens & hanging laundry and hear puppy-dogs & mourning doves out the window.  And sitting in the HOT-TUB unwinding after each day's adventure, we looked down from the terrace into the imperial garden right next door of the Villa Buonvisi belonging to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany, Napoleon's sister Elisa. Our own eponymous LADY ILARIA, elegantly depicted in the lobby, is entombed in the Lucca Duomo Sacristy, captured in translucent marble in splendid Renaissance garb with a heartbreaking story of tragic young love you must look up; she lies next to Lucca's Ghirlandaio masterpiece, the vividly restored "Madonna & Child with Saints."   I tell you, handsome renovated Italian bathroom tile, with its smart colors & stripes, far exceeds my own in NYC & this room was so beautifully maintained day to day, so that each night's return was a refreshing joy. Now, dear reader, I realize the hotel is a small part of one's entire trip to Italy, but this HOTEL ILARIA stay was memorably pleasurable & it's making me shift future plans in order that I can return--except next time I'm going to request a room with a jacuzzi--check out that amazing photo.

My wife and I stayed here while we were walking the Via Francigena. It is a very nice hotel with great service. It is in a very quiet area in the old part of Lucca, but it's an easy walk to all the shops, restaurants, etc. We would definitely stay here again.
